Anyone just started, or about to start, BLW? Care to join me?

Jojay · 03/05/2009 16:46

DS2 is 27 weeks and from last week, is now joining us a mealtimes.

I tried spoonfeeding for a few days but he didn't seem keen, so I tried him with some roasted veg and he was well away. So BLW it is for us.

But I did purees for DS1 2 years ago, so BLW is new to me.

So far he's had roasted sweet potato, carrot, aubergine, courgette, sweet pepper, some lightly steamed apple and pear, banana, mango, and a chip.

When I say 'had' I mean I've offered it to him. Some probably went straight on the floor, but I've found some lumps in his nappy, so some is definitely going in.

The mango was the biggest hit - he loved it!

So tell me what you're doing and how it's going...........

Thanks Jojay, I think so too but I'm biased! The strawberry in the living room was a one off! Notice how she was naked?! Top half anyway - best bet for BLW I think! We still got some on her nappy!

Well breakfast turned out to be a bit more strawberry at a friend's house because DD was up at 4.30am ready to play and then asleep at breakfast time! ho hum, just going with the flow!

ChocOrange05 · 01/06/2009 19:54

Evening all

I think I am a bad BLW-er - DS just wasn't playing ball today - he had no interest in picking anything up and just wanted me to put it in his mouth - cue open mouth and leaning forward when I held food up. I know the BLW book says you shouldn't do that but if its what DS wants then surely its still baby LED?

So today he had Oatibix for breakfast, chicken, tomato and green beans with pasta for lunch and banana on toast for dinner.

pookamoo · 01/06/2009 20:03

DD was doing the same with her strawberry yesterday, and today she tried the same with a pear

RachieW · 01/06/2009 20:06

Hiya Choc- you aren't bad just not a purist. I've also started doing a bit of spoon feeding/putting in mouth if ds lets me. I think really we all just have to do what works for our babies and at the moment for us it's finger food and a little bit of spoon feeding.

KirstyJC · 01/06/2009 20:34

I think the only thing we need to watch out for is the putting food in their mouths bit. As far as I can make out, this could be dangerous ie choking hazard as the whole point is that they are supposed to put it in themselves, so they only put in what they can manage.

Having said that, I have held up a piece of melon that DS was holding and kept dropping 'cos it was too slippery - I held it in front of him and he launched forward and took chunks out!

And guess who loves chocolate cornetto...! Serves me right for trying to eat it with him in my lap.....

ChocOrange05 · 01/06/2009 20:51

I love chocolate cornetto's too, but not as good as the mint ones, although they are hard to find. Your DS has good taste Kirsty .

RachieW · 01/06/2009 20:51

Good point Kirsty. It's tricky isn't it when they want to eat something that is too slippery. Ds got very annoyed with strawberries tonight. Lol at the cornetto

pookamoo · 01/06/2009 21:28

Rachie it seems strawberries take a bit of getting used to! DD pulls a really disgusted face whenever she picks up something slimy, I suppose it is one of the hurdles we will have to get over. Eventually she will work out that she has to pick it up if she wants it! She is fine with rice cakes and breadsticks though, and she liked the yorkshire pudding my mum gave her, too.

And on the topic of icecream my mum also gave DD a lick of a Magnum...

wombleprincess · 01/06/2009 21:32

greensparkles are you sure she was choking and not gagging? I have had a few scares with my DS going red and coughing but after I read about it in the BLW book (it says something about leaving them to deal with it themselves otherwise you can scare them) I try to let him deal with whatever it is himself (on the edge of my seat, heart pounding!). So far he has coped fine without me doing anything. I have been on a baby resus/choking course so I feel more relaxed (just a tiny bit more!) as I know what to do if he does actually choke IYSWIM?

DS has just had his first lunch at a greasy spoon - scrambled egg, sausage and tomato (from my plate). I don't usually have them for lunch but FIL was here and wanted to go. DS seemed to enjoy it!

RachieW · 02/06/2009 17:35

Greensparkles- obviously I wasn't there but agree with Choc that ds might have been gagging. Ds does this a lot, like Choc says it is terrifying for me but I just smile (through gritted teeth) and say things like "oh good boy". So far he's coped on his own too without me doing anything. The first time I did it, it did occur to me I had no clue what to do if he did choke so had a look on the web. Still on the lookout for a baby ressus/choking course just to be on the safe side.

greensnail · 02/06/2009 19:38

DD has certainly got the message that getting in her high chair means food. Every time i've put her in it today she leans forward and starts licking the tray, before i've even put any food on it

And on the ice cream subject, she really enjoyed a taste of my chocolate feast yesterday, but i couldn't bring myself to share my 99 cone today so i kept out of grabbing distance!

Glad she hasn't been put off. It's so hard to stay calm in these situations. Ds actually did quite a lot of coughing and going red on Sunday so I screeched at dh to do something. Dh was cool as a cucumber and told me to let him sort himself out and of course he was fine

ChocOrange05 · 02/06/2009 20:24

I wish my DH was as cool as yours Rachie - mine runs away saying "I hate this" grumble grumble, "can't we just give him puree"?? Um, no - because he refuses them!!

RachieW · 02/06/2009 20:38

Choc- haha to running away dh! Mine has been cool about everything so far except injections. We took ds to his first and second together, both times I had to hold him while dh looked distraught in a corner and the second time he said "I hate this" and went to walk out the room .

ChocOrange05 · 02/06/2009 20:45

I cried after the first injections - how cruel to make PFB sit on mummys lap while they stab him till he cries!!!

RachieW · 02/06/2009 20:59

I know! I got through it by telling myself that the diseases would be worse, like a mantra in my head over and over . The worst was the BCG when the needle had to be be in for 20 seconds which felt like 20 minutes Thankfully no more until a year now.

ilovespagbol · 02/06/2009 23:38

I'd like to join too! I am a couple of weeks in and need support and inspiration. Everybody else I know is giving purees. I feel like the new fangled hippy mother but it makes perfect sense to me. I do give DD some runny food (porridge and yoghurt) but I give DD the loaded spoon and she just rams it into her mouth. Most of it ends up round her mouth. I think she likes the spoon most! Be good to get ideas on finger food. Excitedly made eggy bread, one with cinnamon, one without and she picked it up and threw it off her tray. Next time maybe! She loves mango and melon and rice cakes with cottage cheese. I love making her bits and seeing what I can give her that we have. Mealtime is fun in our house. I go by the Gill R view that its all adventure and exploring tastes and milk is still the main form of nutrition. I happily zone out when people talk of when to drop feeds and how many ice cubes of this and that!

ChocOrange05 · 03/06/2009 10:01

Ilovespagbol thanks for the fantastic idea of eggy bread - I love it so shall be making it for DS soon - although I might have to leave off the lashings of sugar I sprinkle over mine. DH has his with ketchup but I think that's just wierd!!

Jojay · 03/06/2009 11:59

Hi all - this thread moves so quickly now I can't keep up!

Ds2 is doing fine atm - he loves eating his squashy food straight off his tray, but any spoonfeeding is well nigh impossible now.

I made him a cheesy omelette yesterday which brought up a rash round his mouth, similar to the one he had when he ate tomato, so he's obviously a bit sensitive to egg too. It fades after half an hour or so, and there doesn't seem to be any other effects, so I don't think I need to cut it out completely, but I'll keep introducing new things slowly I think.

I think I've managed to drop a milk feed too. He was feeding at (roughly) 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 6.45 pm, 10.30 pm, 3 am ish, so 7 milk feeds a day - quite a lot.

So a couple of days ago He fed at 7 am then had a good breakfast (for him) at 8 am, so I waited till 11 am to give him a bfeed. He didn't complain, so I did the next one at 2 pm - he didn't have much lunch - then a good tea and sip of water at 5 pm, then a last bfeed at 6.45 pm. So no milk between 2 pm and 6.45 pm - hurray!

It all went to pot yesterday as he woke at 5.45am (yawn) but we're aiming for a better day today.

Anyway, today he had weetabix bite sized for breakfast. He wasn't that interested touhhg he had a bit, but he often isn't a breakfast time. Cheesy Risotto on the menu for lunch, and salmon and Noodles for tea. Wih us luck

I think I might try eggy bread tonight. I'm so bored of toast fingers and banana! DD really didn't like mango though, it all went in, her face dropped and she shuddered with disgust...very funny but it did mean I had to finish it off - yummy!!
DD's not drinking much at mo, is far more interested in solids but isn't actually eating much either. I think the sun's put her off...and the mess - argh!! I wish we had wooden floors!! I can't get the butternut squash out of the carpet...

duffpancake · 03/06/2009 15:18

Can I join? I tried blw with dd and it didn't really work out for us but I'm having another crack at it with ds-- doing some spoon-feeding as well but this is getting harder and harder as he constantly grabs the spoon and wants to feed himself!

I see quite a few people are doing eggy things-- are eggs ok at 6 months+ ? I have a hazy recollection of some long-ago weaning chart that the whites and the yolks had different times to be introduced but can't remember the exact details. Would love to start him on some omelettes as dd is a big fan and I often make them for her.

RachaelandAgatha · 03/06/2009 17:12

Hello BLWers, me and Baby Moo are struggling a bit with the feeding. She's 28 weeks now, we started at 26 weeks.

Like duffpancake's ds she is grabbing the spoons I try to feed baby porridge with and flicking the stuff around! Also blows raspberries in liquidy foods or squirts for solid stuff in and out of her mouth before spitting it out.

We have been doing BLW for nearly 3 weeks and she doesn't swallow much at all but is great at biting off bits and chewing it around in her mouth. Also good at picking it up and getting it to her mouth, even small things like baked beans.

I really would love her to eat more solid stuff soon as I am worn out breastfeeding round the clock (twice or more at night still) and she won't drink from a bottle or sippy cup at all.

How long does it take before they get the hang of swallowing? Will she be just experimenting for months on end?
