But they are right, I didn't use purees but I spoon fed mine with yoghurt or cereal on occasion but still think of them as BLW'd.

GazelleH · 20/04/2009 23:50

So what you are saying is that BLW is an exclusive club and if your baby has ever had a puree then you cannot choose to go down the BLW route?

Stretch · 20/04/2009 23:50

Me too Jack. I do sometimes let him spoon yoghurt, but only when I'm feeling brave!!

IMO anything that gets the message across that spoon feeding heinz jars at 3 months is not the only way to go can only be a good thing.

oopsagain · 20/04/2009 23:59

As i understand it, BLW means that the baby eats food that nthey alone pick up and put in their own mouths.
If you use purees, by definition you aren't doing BLW... unless the baby is scooping it up himself and eating it himself.
it's all about the baby picking his own food under his own steam.
Theoretially- and practiaclly with my ds2, the adult doesn't need to "feed" the baby. you just plonk food in fromt and hey presto.

And FFS, it isn't an "exclusive club", it's a definition of how something's done. jeeez

Netmums have a good thread header on weaning IIRC?

GazelleH · 21/04/2009 00:04

I agree with JB.

Isn't it better that other parenting forums are extolling the virtues of BLW than to discounting the concept all together as has happened in the past?

You can't have your cake and eat it as they say.......but BLW babies can ;).

JackBauer · 21/04/2009 00:04

Oh yes, I know what BLW is, just that if you use a spoon a few times doesn;t mean you should be expelled from BLW class.
FWIW I feel that if you load a spoon and hold it in front of them, letting them move it into their mouths, then that is just as much BLW as broccoli florets and pasta.
It's just less messy

Ok, fair enough.
sitting up tonight avoiding thinking about all the stress in my life and maybe have ended up a bit grrr about something stupid.

And I haven't expelled anyone from BLW class... not ever.

Don't be pressurised by HV Starlight! You know your baby best.

Plonker · 21/04/2009 00:16

But isn't spoonfeeding and BLW together, just, well ...weaning?

oopsagain · 21/04/2009 00:19

apparently not, plonker.
it is using elements of BLW and using purees... apparently.

oh, bum, there i go again.
Must go to bed and stare at ceiling trying to sleep instead.
not good to wind up MNetters in a weekly BLW vs the rest of the world thread.

i didn't really think it through, did I?
