A General Thread for BLW

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 03/03/2009 16:02

Hi! I thought I would start off a thread for anybody who is interested in BLW, who has started it or has done it and hopefully we can support one another. I havnt seen another general thread on it yet so sorry if anyone has already started it-could you link me if so?

My DS is nearly 6mths old and we have been giving him the odd bit of finger food which he absoloutly loves! Guidelines state you should wait until they are 6mths old and able to sit unsupported but 1st time parent excitment has made me a bit impatient and eager to let DS join in the fun!

So is there anyone else out there?

Thebreastmilk...yep when were having the

'which book is right?!?!?!?!?!?'

crisis dh said

'what did the cavemen do without books??'

He's very simple and very fab.

Goingnowherefast - ds 2 only wanted to use cutlery in the past few days so we're only just going through this so no expert. He literally just picked the fork and put it in his food then put it to his mouth so he was very clear with what it does. I've since put the fork at the top (where posh restaurants put spoons) so I don't influence which hand he chooses (I know I can't but my dad does insist my mother 'made' my brothers left handed as she gave them the cutlery so they would hold it in their left hands. Bollocks if you ask me but there you go) He did have a stab at the food on the table but now I've begun to put it in a bowl so he's not chasing it around and can use the edge to help him get the food on the fork. We used a spoon for the first time this morning and he still had the idea though it's going to take a while for his food on the fork success rate to get better!

Quick question - 7 mo dd is doing quite well with BLW, dexterity improving daily - can she have sweetcorn?? We're going to my nan's tomorrow and she's planning to make sweetcorn fritters which would be ideal for DD to pick up and smoosh into her mouth, but I wasn't sure if her digestion could handle them yet... any advice appreciated.

SnowlightMcKenzie · 04/03/2009 19:44

This is a lovely thread.

I'm still at the:

'maybe I should be thinking about buying a highchair' stage.

DD 6 months on Monday. HV going on and on and on and on about giving her baby rice.

Jacksmama · 04/03/2009 19:54

Great thread! DS is 12 1/2 months and was almost exclusively BF'd until 9 months. We tried baby rice and it made him sicker than sick so I stuck with BF. Magically one day I offered him yoghurt and he loved it and after that was willing to try most things. But he's still pretty much a milk monster.

muppetgirl · 04/03/2009 20:09

I think we were later with sweetcorn as their shell is a bit harder than peas.

mothersmilk · 04/03/2009 20:16

can i join?
my ds is six months and blw didnt get on with it at all in fact i posted on here for support and people were great anyway i persivered without any spoon feeding and today he wolfed down both porrage pancakes and stuffed jacket potatoe tonight seems to have got the hang of scooping, it was lovely to watch
also does anyone elses dc not seem to be intrested in any food befor mid afternoon ds just doest respond to it at all actually he just doesnt like being in his highchair untill the afternoon

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/03/2009 21:10

Minniemummy I wold imagine sweetcorn to be ok-any bits she can't digest would probably pass straight through just like tomato seeds, kiwi seeds etc.

Jacksmama- 9 mths! thats fab! I wish I could have waited until 6 full mths but I was so excited I allowed him to join in sooner!

mothersmilk- Wel done you for perserveering! You'll be glad you did! Not being interested until afternoon sounds perfectly normal to me. In the BLW book I read it mentioned something about babies being perfectly content with just their milk in the mornings. Just go with it.

Snowlight- Come on! You just know it will be brill and it might help to motivate you into eating more healthily too! Go and choose yourself a nice high chair and cook yourself something tasty so baby snowlight can join in and take some pictures whilst your at it so show the HV!

great thread and what timing! My ds is 6M today and I want to try blw with him - but now we've reached the magic date I am thinking errr, what now?

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/03/2009 22:10

When you have your next meal- make sure its not too hot/salty/fatty/unhealthy and doesn't contain items that could cause choking such as nuts and grapes, let him sit on your lap with a bib and maybe an apron over yourself cos its messy and just let him help himself to your meal! Make sure he is sitting upright and don't distract him whilst he is eating. He probably won't swallow much if any food at his stage but that's how it should be- an opportunity for him to play and explore with different tastes and textures!

good luck!

DS had a couple of bits of my quesadilla today and loved it! Came back to stand right in front of me with his mouth open like a little bird!

At lunchtime, I tried feeding him some of my butternut squash soup but he wasn't keen on it. Because he needed to be stripped down and washed anyway, I gave him his little pot of yoghurt and a spoon and sat back and PMSL watched. He eventually figured out how to dip the spoon in the yoghurt, and then laboriously turned the spoon around and sucked on it . The entire kid was covered in yoghurt, LOL! It was a bit of a waste of yoghurt, but oh well - he seemed to have a good time.

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 08:35

i agree with thebreastmilksonme one of the great things about blw is that it makes you asess what it is you are actually eating of course we were rubbish virtuous eaters way befor
this may sound incredibly frugal so forgive me were on credit crunch but the one thing about it im not too keen on is the food waste anyone else feel remotly the same (please dont judge me) my ds does seem to throw most on the floor as expected

muppetgirl · 05/03/2009 12:41

Hi all!

We had fish fingers chips and beans last night and he was so excited to try with the fork! (I am still chicken with beans and spoon him myself) For pudding he watched me cut up and apple and munched on that.

He had 8 teeth at 8 months (1st at 4) and I think this helped with quite lumpy things early on. Do you think the number of teeth has any bearing?? He's 16 months now and has 15/16 teeth and chews fantastically.

Does anyone else find meat is much more difficult? Ds like the taste but tends to let it go round then spit it out. My spag bol is fine as is my lasagne but if I make a burger he likes it broken up into tiny (really tiny pieces)
Fish cooked in milk (any fish really) is a sucess but bacon? Once sucked and chewed is always spat out.

Loves roast dinners especially dh's gravy! Am going to try Tana Ramseys chicken and mango with rice for the boys as dh and I have had it and it's lovely. Uses chicken thighs which are so much cheaper than breast too.

muppetgirl · 05/03/2009 12:42

Oh and I don;t add any salt to cooking as dh and I (and 5 year old ds 1) have pinches from the salt cellar.

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 14:06

so having shepards pie tonight will that be ok for 6month old ds as it is sloppy? he handles baked tattie and beans ok just grabs handfulls and sucks it up

muppetgirl · 05/03/2009 14:07

I would say in our experience that would be fine. I do chop all veggies very small when in a spag bol/ shep's pie etc.

warthog · 05/03/2009 14:10

muppetgirl, i think chicken thighs taste FAR nicer than breast.

my dd2 has been weaning for 2 weeks now but isn't so good at picking things up and shoving them in her mouth. she seems to like me holding things for her to gum which i guess isn't really blw.

any tips?

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 14:20

my ds was the same warthog i jus persivered and tried not to put any thing in his mouth just left him to it and tried not to worry about the fact he didnt seen interested and when he was he was unable to get much into his mouth then suddenly it just clicked we still get days when he's not keen but i just leave it my dd feasts and famins so im pretty used to it
baked potatoes did it for ds i think, a big bit of skin easy to hang on to and he just sucks it all off

warthog · 05/03/2009 14:22

well dd2 gets so cross if i don't help her though. she's clearly dying to eat and will always eat whatever i give her.

but i think you're right - i should just try and let her get on with it herself. if she really wants to she'll get there!

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 14:30

ds used to get so frustrated to i could see he was hungery as he's a big baby aswell i really thought just giving it all up a spoon feeding him would be best but im glad i didnt its lovely to watch him now covering himself, me the walls the floor his sister his dad did i mention the floor? with food

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 14:31

sorry hungry dont know how i spelt that wrong ooops

mothersmilk · 05/03/2009 14:32

have you tried putting it into her hand sometimes that what ds cant master actually picking it up

warthog · 05/03/2009 14:33

yes i have but she often just drops it.

i will persevere

SnowlightMcKenzie · 05/03/2009 14:38

Oh with DS I just kept the flor below clean beforehand and just picked it up and gave it back.

Right, off to browse the net for a cheap tripp trapp..........

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/03/2009 15:31

Im going to make some macaroni cheese tonight but with large pasta tubes. I probably won't give DS any tonight though as he's feeling a bit off colour as he had his jabs yesterday.
