so my mil says the reason my dd doesn't like her veggies is because i blw'ed her.

is she right?

dd (nearly 3) only eats carrots, peas, sweetcorn and beans and doesn't like cabbage, sprouts, marrows and other veg.

apparently this is because i let her eat what she wants and hasn't got used to the taste of other veg. i should have pureed veg and shovelled it down her gob.

no she isn't right.
i have one puree-fed baby who eats anything
and one BLW-d baby who eats anything.

plenty of people don't like cabbage, sprouts and marrows . nothing to do with how they are weaned

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 21/01/2009 19:08

Complete nonsense.

As far as I can work out, most children like carrots, peas, sweetcorn and beans better than other veg, because they have a sweeter flavour and they're nice and easy to eat.

And so what? She's getting veg, what's the problem?

DS was BLW'd and loves cabbage. Hates sprouts. Haven't tried marrows as we don't eat them very often.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2009 19:10

Well DS has never tried marrow!

warthog · 21/01/2009 19:43

her other argument against blw was that if dd doesn't try some foods (like cabbage / radicchio) then she may develop an allergy to them.

what's BLW???

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 21/01/2009 19:45

Baby Led Weaning - google it or search on here, there's loads of info.

Erm I'm sure there's lots of things I didn't try as a child, no allergies here. My mum didn't have a banana till she was eight (war baby) and seems to cope fine.

Stick to your guns

thisisyesterday · 21/01/2009 19:48

she isnt going to get an allergy to sodmething just because you havenb't given it to her,

that said, I do think it's worthwhile giving children a wide range of stuff while you're weaning them. it does get them used to the taste of things, although that's not to say they won't reject it later

12StoneNeedsToBe10 · 21/01/2009 19:48

ah I see - thanks What

choosyfloosy · 21/01/2009 19:54

a) what absolute rubbish
b) her point is? not much you can do about it now, even if she whipped out a definitive global study of 15,000 babies proving that pureed cabbage was the favourite food around the world.

ds was pureed and his dislikes/likes are exactly the same as your dcs. Not that that is at all relevant.

ThumbBurns · 21/01/2009 19:58

I think it sounds like rubbish.
My DS (13.5mp) goes in fits and starts as to whether he likes veg or not - he started off loving steamed carrot sticks off my plate, now he won't touch them, nor the broccoli, green beans or any other veg I offer him. At the moment he is fully into proteins - meat, fish etc. off my plate. But a few months ago you couldn't get him to take the proteins.
He also quite happily ate pasta twirls off my plate but wouldn't eat the ones I made especially for him until I had pureed them into the sauce!

I am hoping that in the next few weeks, he will start to accept the veggies again and will no longer need me to puree his own food while still accepting non-pureed "mummy" food.

warthog · 21/01/2009 20:03

well she's concerned that dd1 isn't getting her requisite veg and wants to think of ways that i can address this.

i think she's also worried that as i'm about to start weaning dd2, i'll make the same mistake.

tbh she often sprouts odd things. but this one has made me feel bad.

Lots of people don't like sprouts or veg! It's easy for people to criticise, isn't it!

noonki · 21/01/2009 20:38

the main reason some people detest sprouts is genetic.

To some they taste bitter because of a chemical, but others cannot taste it. (I can't. DH can. neither DS can. but DSS can!!!!)

DH &DSS are the two least fussy eaters in the world and yet neither will touch a sprout.

so they are talking out of their arses

Habbibu · 21/01/2009 20:42

No, she's talking nonsense. Noonki is right - some people are supertasters - I am, and can't stand sprouts. I can eat cabbage and broccoli if very very lightly cooked, but not otherwise.

My dd eats fennel, anchovies, all sorts of weird stuff, but doesn't like cabbage or sprouts.

BrownSuga · 21/01/2009 20:54

If I'd known that about sprouts as a child, or rather had my mother known, it would have saved many a distressing dinner. Bleurgh!

Habbibu · 21/01/2009 21:09

I didn't much cooked veg as a child, actually, so I would stand at the kitchen sink, and eat loads of veg as mum washed and chopped them. Win-win situation, and a tip I'd recommend - I love loads of veg now, and no dinner table battles. Smart woman, my mother.

Habbibu · 21/01/2009 21:10

didn't like, that is.

warthog · 21/01/2009 21:17

habbibu - exactly! my dd1 eats loads of veg raw! i think she is a super-taster. i am so it stands that she may have inherited that gene.

i did say this to my mil. she said all her kids ate all their food.

trying not to feel pissed off because she is thinking about my dd's and if there's something i can do better, i'm glad if she points it out. but this just doesn't seem fair.

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 21/01/2009 21:19

Not right. DD was a mixture, loves some veg, does not like others. Last month, it was different veg, next month it will no doubt be some different ones. Apart from mushrooms which she has always adored (but methinks are not vegetables? ).

Habbibu · 21/01/2009 21:21

Tell her raw veg is better than cooked, blind her with the super-taster science, and run for the hills.

Tommy · 21/01/2009 21:22

DS1 was puree weaned - he only eats carrots and baby corn but will do peas if bribed.

DS2 was puree weaned - he will eat carrots and peas

DS3 was BLW - he will give anything a go

send your MIL round here - she'll probably have a purple ft

Lionstar · 21/01/2009 21:24

My BLW DD is a total veg nut, she specifically picks all the green stuff out to eat first. I'm not sure I've come across a vegetable she won't eat - except maybe onion, and she struggles with lettuce.

wastingmyeducation · 22/01/2009 09:19

Forcing a child to eat something they don't want is much more likely to put them off it.

LeoMcGarry · 22/01/2009 09:38

I'm discovering with my BLW DS (9mo) that he just finds plain steamed veg really boring now that he is eating a much broader range of food.

He hasn't touched plain broccoli for a while, but then happily had it this week in a strong cheese sauce with some spinach, wrapped in pancakes. He adores fish, but yesterday lunchtime picked his herby roasted veg over that! I think with him that he loves quite strong or interesting tastes, and plain veg just isn't his thing. So now I try to do more with herbs, spices, sauces, mixes of veggies etc. Maybe your DD is like my DS and just finds plain steamed veg a bit boring in comparison to the other exciting things on the plate.

Just tell your MIL that it is very common for kids to be fussy about veg, yet most kids have been puree-weaned

stealthsquiggle · 22/01/2009 09:45

but if she eats veg raw then how is she 'missing out'? Confused

My DC were both BLW-d (more or less) and have entirely different tastes - DS eats everything except cream and pineapple, DD eats 1 food group per day and will reject today what she ate with gusto yesterday, hates mushrooms and baked beans, and loves cream.

Go figure. People are individuals. Your DD is getting a healthier diet that a lot of 3yos.
