Is ready brek a good option after 6 months?

I've read that cereals such as ready brek are a good option for a baby's breakfast after 6 months - is this right? I intend on adding apple, pear etc. At the moment, DS has a bit of baby rice in the morning, but I'd like to try different things.

its never had salt in it. all mine have had ready brek/hot oat cereals since they were little ones.

thisisyesterday · 04/12/2008 15:31

jeez if I were weetabix i'd have sued them over that! it's very misleading and makes out like the baby died because of having ready brek.
which didn't even have salt in it.

Tinkjon · 04/12/2008 18:49

BroccoliSpears, my DS found normal oats far too difficult to eat at that age, as do many others - he just spat them out. But blitzed in a blender (along with flaked quinoa) was fine for him. I don't find that porridge takes any time to cook at all! I can do it in far less than 1:30, EachPeach! I do cook it at full heat though and perhaps you're supposed to simmer it gently.

Soak porridge oats in milk overnight and eat next day - just needs warming through and is lovely and creamy without loads of cooking. Top tip for busy mornings!!

Oh my god that story is awful.

How much salt is safe for a baby? I know none is best but surely you cant eliminate all???

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 21:12

Depends on what you call a baby really. If you use no processed food at all then it is easily done - but you have to be ready to use no gravy unless you make it yourself from meat juices and flour. Tomato sauce as well. But apart from that babies are ok to cook for as their food is so simple.

DD1 was salt free till 2, then 1gram a day absolute maximum.

think it's zero till 2, then 2 grams till 5, then 4 or something. Government websites have guidelines.

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 21:13

www.salt.gov.uk are the guidelines.

Too high in my opinion but I'm a bit anti processed food, so I base this on my gut reactionnot facts.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 04/12/2008 21:14

Thanks treedelivery. I will have a look. Dd is 6mo so will stick to home made food with nothing in.

Habbibu · 04/12/2008 21:17

Do tree's tip, and then bung it in the microwave for 2 mins. Easy and very lovely. But then I think ready brek is vile, so I may be biased.

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 21:20

hmmm now fancy some porridge made with gold top milk with golden syrup on.

Hmmmmmm

Also good with broken up chocolate swirled round and all melting and creamy. Drooling now.

Bring on bereakfast time!!

nappyaddict · 04/12/2008 21:21

Nothing wrong with it but porridge oats are a much cheaper alternative.

RedSantaHatOnHerHead · 04/12/2008 21:24

DS2 is 7mths and we recently started weaning - i find ready brek easier than porridge oats because he only eats a small amount and we use breastmilk - so its easier to boil up a small amount of breastmilk, than cook a small amount of oats in a small amount of breastmilk. I find with the oats the milk tends to burn more easily because of the tiny amount.

I never thought about soaking the night before. Will have to try this - the only problem is - in the night i don't have as much milk as i do in the mornings. But i suppose i could express some off and keep it in the fridge til the evening.

MatNanPlusTINSEL · 04/12/2008 21:28

In Italy (Sicily) the baby jars have added salt, named brands including Plasmon who are owned by Heinz, this is in jars from 4m!!!

Millie1 · 04/12/2008 21:30

When can you start using cow's milk on cereals? Is that from 6 mths? DT's are almost 7 months and I'm thinking about Readybrek or Weetabix for breakfast but couldn't be expressing enough milk for them . Think cows milk is okay on cereals and cooking now but could someone please confirm this for me. TIA

nappyaddict · 04/12/2008 21:32

Yes from 6 monts

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 21:34

Sorry to hijack but....

Has anyone cooked with their breastmilk? As inmade porridge or cheese sauce or something. For babs I mean not Sunday family dinner!

Does it do ok with heat etc?

Millie1 · 04/12/2008 21:35

Thanks Nappyaddict

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 21:38

Millie1 - I used half breast milk and half water for the first little while, or as much breastmilk as I had and made up rest with water.

Only cos dd1 had allergies and itches so had to go very carefully.

pispirispis · 04/12/2008 22:09

thisisyesterday, have you tried a really wide shallow bowl? After many many spills this has finally worked for me! Maybe something to do with surface area?

treedelivery · 04/12/2008 22:59

thisisyesterday - I have your experience of microwave and porridge. Soak overnight, it's the way forward.

Will try pispirispis idea too by way of research.

thisisyesterday · 05/12/2008 09:28

no, I haven't. but will give it a go!
I used to make it on the hob for ds1 every morning, but these days just don't have the time, or the energy lol.

ds2 can't have dairy and oat milk always goes a bit manky if I boil it too much so I tend to do readybrek with boiling water and then oat milk to cool it down and make it a bit milkier.

Millie1 · 05/12/2008 11:37

That's a good idea Treedelivery ... thanks for that.

pinkmalibu · 06/12/2008 18:55

Did you know weetabix has added salt? I always thought it was safe for babies. It doesn't say how much tho.

Seona1973 · 06/12/2008 20:06

weetabix doesnt have that much salt in - there is 1/4 of a gram of salt in 2 biscuits so there is only 1/8th of a gram in 1 biscuit or 1/16th of a gram in half a biscuit.

kif · 04/12/2008 10:43
