Is ready brek a good option after 6 months?

I've read that cereals such as ready brek are a good option for a baby's breakfast after 6 months - is this right? I intend on adding apple, pear etc. At the moment, DS has a bit of baby rice in the morning, but I'd like to try different things.

Just use normal oats, much better and cheaper. Mine love porridge in winter. Chopped ried apple rings are really good in it too.

katiepotatie · 03/12/2008 15:25

I've been giving it to DD 20 months since she was 6 months old, she loves it, it's a bit smoother than oats

PinkPussyCat · 03/12/2008 15:26

I used to blitz dry oats in a blender to make a finer porridge, it worked well.

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 15:42

What pinkpussycat said- it's much cheaper!

pinkmalibu · 03/12/2008 19:57

I wondered about using normal oats and was going to try blitzing them. I live in germany and finding ready brek is like finding gold dust!

BroccoliSpears · 03/12/2008 19:58

Why blitz them? Normal oats are fine for a 6-month-old.

thisisyesterday · 03/12/2008 19:59

yes it's fine. it's just regular oats but ground up a bit more.

we used to use regular porridge oats, which is also fine from 6 months.
nowadays it tends to be ready brek simply because it's so much quicker.

lulu25 · 03/12/2008 19:59

hasn't ready brek got salt in it?

Itsjustsorandom · 03/12/2008 20:00

I use this & it's perfect for breakfast & also mixed with yoghurt for lunch & dinner. I add it to mashed veg to bulk it out.

thisisyesterday · 03/12/2008 20:04

nope

Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour, Calcium, Niacin, Iron, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.

thisisyesterday · 03/12/2008 20:04

another reason I use it. ds2 is dairy and egg free, so it's a good fortified breakfast for him, with the calcium and stuf in

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 03/12/2008 20:10

It used to have salt in but the recipe has since changed. I just use normal porridge oats as dd doesn't really like smooth foods.

onepieceoflollipop · 03/12/2008 20:12

I prefer ready brek myself but but the supermarket's own brand "hot oat cereal" - it is identical ime apart from price.

Or if you are adding fruit and other tasty things then yes porridge oats even better.

onepieceoflollipop · 03/12/2008 20:13

I mean I prefer ready brek (or cheapo alternative) to porridge, not that I only eat branded "Ready Brek" Imo no difference in taste Ready Brek v "hot oat cereal"

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 20:36

I find porridge (although we love it in our house) takes too long on a weekday morning. Ready Brek takes 1:30, so that is one reason to use it. I also wondered if it having extra vitamins in was a good thing?
Porridge tastes sooooooo much nicer though- you won't catch me eating the ready brek!

noonki · 03/12/2008 21:04

DS1 adores his porridge. He's 3 now and been eating it since 7 months. Far better than Ready Brek, cheaper too.

we make it in the microwave, and add milk at the end to cool down (and then the honey..which is a big part of it , we have to find the honey cupboard then the jar, then the spoon, then pour it in, then lose the will to live )

thisisyesterday · 03/12/2008 21:07

i can't do porridge in the microwave. it ALWAYS spills over. no matter how big the bowl.
so i have to do it on the hob. and it takes an age

tis yummy though

noonki · 03/12/2008 21:31

thisisyesterday, you're doing it for too long!

SamJohnsMum · 04/12/2008 08:55

Fabulous - thanks for this!! I asked my hubbie if he had ever had ready brek himself and his face lit up!! He was so enthusiastic about it, I'm going to have to buy some for him, if not ds1 - clearly I have been neglecting my wifely duties over the past 7 years by not giving him ready brek!!

if i do it for any less it isn't done properly! honestly, I have even tried those sachets where you have the exact amount of oats and add the exact amount of milk.
still spills over

kif · 04/12/2008 10:43

no - not ready brek. read horribe story about baby getting salt poisoning from it.

MrsBadger · 04/12/2008 10:45

kif - ready brek has no added salt

ingredients are listed lower down

kif · 04/12/2008 10:50

I guess if this www.telegraph.co.uk/htmlContent.jhtml?html=/archive/1999/07/27/nbab27.html

had happened to my product I'd change the ingredients too. good on them.

if you read the quote at the bottom of t the article, Ready Brek never had salt in

the problem was mostly the age of the baby - 3m is far too early even for unsalted things, let alone gravy
