i want to start weaning my 4 month dd and have read everywhere about baby rice, excuse my ignorance but where can i buy baby rice from...is it in the baby section of the supermarket? does it come as dry rice or a powder form that is mixed with milk/water??? and any suggestions as to brand? i feel that this question is probably the most stupid to be aired on mumsnet .

Hey - how are you a bad mum? Stop that stuff!! Tell the voices in your head to bog off!!!

hercules · 24/02/2005 17:42

Happymomoftwo - how much research have you done?I have to disagree that mums know best on this one.

hercules · 24/02/2005 17:43

No, you are not a bad mum either.

Out of interest what made you think they were ready?

NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2005 17:46

Everyone does their best with the information they have. I don't think "bad mom" is fair, about any of this.

That being said, I think people are (understandably!) eager to see their babies as "advanced", and weaning early feels like a sign your baby is advanced.

I do wonder if IBS and similar gut issues might be caused by early weaning. I'm not sure all the problems associated with early solids appear immediately. Of course, IBS is one of those things that's hard to work out the origins of.

hercules · 24/02/2005 17:47

I have read that ibs might be related to eaerly weaning. Somer side effects dont show up until much later and I think ibs is one.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2005 17:53

Really? That was just my instinct!

I have (moderate) IBS, and I'm quite sure I was weaned pretty early, given my mom thinks 10 weeks is late to wean.

I know she was just following the current advice at the time, but this means hopefully my sons won't have this ... well, at least DS2 hopefully won't.

laneydaye · 24/02/2005 17:54

just read the bit on sleeping after cereal.....
i really am in a bit of a tizzy now
just want to do the best for my dd......(thats one of the main reasons to start baby rice, cos dd is so hungry in the night)

I wont comment any further as i dont want to be seen as pushy. I do think though that it is important to research these things. I could how research disputes what you say but if anyone want to learn more they can do so themselves.
I dont agree that it cant be harmful to wean early. That's not my opinion but what research shows.

hercules · 24/02/2005 18:02

ANd no, it's not the norm in real life as it takes time to change thinking. That doesnt mean people should be advised correctly though and given accurate information in order to make an informed choice.

hercules · 24/02/2005 18:04

Happymumoftwo- should we not mention the WHO recommenations and the science behind them?

happymumof2, i think the point is that people do not know the research, nor the consequences of their decision (either way)

laneydaye · 24/02/2005 18:31

why was i not told to wait when my ds was a baby?

shevi · 24/02/2005 18:31

agree with hercules. The advice from WHO is based on scientific research, they feel early weaning is associated with health problems in later life - obesity, coronary heart disease, bowel problems, allergies etc. So the advice is for formula and b/fed babies to try not to wean before six months with specific guidance not to wean before 17.5 weeks. some hv's are not particularly upto date on the subject of weaning and talk about 'the window of opportunity' for weaning and if u miss it you will have difficulty weaning . this research was based on a small study and has been proved to be rubbish. at the end of the day u must do what u think is right for your baby, but u will aslo need to be aware of the facts. hope this helps x

bundle · 24/02/2005 18:32

the official advice has been changed since your 4 yr old was that age. my 4.5 yr old dd was weaned around 5 and a bit months, whereas with dd2 i waited till she was 6 mths, in line with the WHO guidelines.

hercules · 24/02/2005 18:37

The WHO have recommended 6 months for at least 10 years. This country has only taken this as official guidance in the last couple of years.
IT takes a long time to educate people. HV's are not all aware of this.

shevi · 24/02/2005 18:37

forgot to say i had heard , but cant remember where, the government want to change the labelling on baby food to reflect the WHO guidelines.

hercules · 24/02/2005 18:38

Yes, they do.

Amanda3266 · 24/02/2005 18:40

The WHO reserch has been at 10 years for a good while as hercules says. Until recently though the Dept. of Health advised 4 months but have now changed because it was felt that women were weaning off the breast too quickly. In my area we advise 6 months BUT sometimes have problems getting people to wait until 4 months!

it's not just about sense though, there's a lot of research re: the immature gut which no one would know about unless they'd read up on it or at least the WHO guidelines
