babies and weetabix

Hello. I have always been told that weetabix is fine from 6 months, so I have been givng my DD some for breakfast in the mornings. However, I have now been told they have too much salt.

Whats everybodys opinions on weetabix?

If not weetabix, whats a good baby breakfast? We sometime have fruit: banana etc or maybe a yogurt. Have tried toast, and currently offer it at lunch, but most ends up on the floor

I have always given Weetabix - I don't think there is too much salt, is there? I also give Readybrek too. You can get healthy cereals to give from your local health food shop is you want to try cornflakes etc.

Washersaurus · 28/06/2008 10:37

*if not is

schneebly · 28/06/2008 10:39

I used to give mine mainly porridge with fruit - think readybrek is less lumpy for younger ones.

hellogoodbye · 28/06/2008 10:52

Washer - bit young for cornflakes I think as my DD is 6months.

Maybe I will do 1 day weetabix, then ready brek, then a day of fruit, then a day of yougurt etc so it can be varied, then at least if one has too much sugar/salt then it would only be once a week.

2 weetabix has 1/4 of a gram of salt so 1 weetabix has only 1/8th of a gram of salt and a half of one would have only 1/16th of a gram of salt so they are not that salty at all. At that age I think ds only ate 1/3rd to 1/2 of a weetabix. Ready brek or porridge dont have any added salt/sugar so would be another option.

Hoonette · 28/06/2008 14:09

My DS is on Shredded Wheat, which Ian Botham tells us is 100% wheat.

I add raisins and he seems to like it.

Washersaurus · 28/06/2008 15:06

Never too young for cornflakes! Sorry, we've been blw and DS2 eats mostly the same as us.

Twinkie1 · 28/06/2008 15:11

Bee careful when DS was small Weetabix used to burn his bottom when it came out of the other end - he even blistered from it!

hellogoodbye · 28/06/2008 19:20

Twinkle - What do you mean burn? Sorry, its just my DD has screamed the last few days when has a dirty nappy or is being changed. Which is not like her and is since she has had weetabix.

I thought ready brek had sugar in?

these are the ingredients for ready brek original (i.e. plain and not flavoured) - no sugar or salt is added.

Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour, Calcium, Niacin, Iron, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 28/06/2008 20:08

Or (here's a crazy suggestion ) what about porridge? Stick some oats in a bowl, add a splash of milk or water, microwave for a bit (watch it doesn't boil over) then mix with raisins and yoghurt/milk to cool it down. No salt/sugar and oats are very healthful. DS loves it.

MummyToOneForNow · 28/06/2008 20:11

Having read the ingredients for readybrek once I tried whizzing up a few spoonfuls of ordinary porridge oats in the mini-chopper that came with my handblender - got a similar consistency to readybrek at a fraction of the price (not vitamin fortified obviously but dd has a pretty varied diet so not too worried).

hellogoodbye · 28/06/2008 21:25

Main reason I wanted to ask about ready brek, I have some here left over from when my sister was staying with us, and we dont eat it, so wil be good to use up on DD

I gave mine Oatibix - seemed to be better on his digestion.

You could try them on anything I reckon - they hardly eat any of ot at this stage anyway

How do you give other cereals? Do you crush them up or give them whole?

shrinkingsagpuss · 01/07/2008 15:45

cheerios - healthy?!!!! you ARE funny. Ever read the ingrediants... sugar, honey, bit more sugar.

I second the weetabix is fine thing, as well as milling yuor own oats into ready break.

shrinkingsagpuss · 01/07/2008 15:46

put milk on, let it get soggy, feed it to baby (or let baby feed self)

sorry I was a bit harsh. but there is 12g of sugar in a 30g serving!! (I'll have to check that again, having typed it it looks wrong!)

cupsoftea · 01/07/2008 22:04

ready brek?

MrsWaggsnapps · 02/07/2008 16:50

I use either Dove farm weetabix or hippabisc as they are both low salt but alternate with shreddies. I am rubbish at making porridge and after many attempts have given up.

I just load a spoon up for P. and give it to her - if she's hungry it all goes in her mouth, if not it sticks nicely to the fridge door

HensMum · 03/07/2008 18:56

I give my 8.5 month old Weetabix or Oatibix most mornings.

Annabel Karmel recommends Cheerios as a "low sugar" finger food which I couldn't work out as one of the main ingredients seemed to be sugar . Anyway, just checked the Cheerios website www.cerealpartners.co.uk/brands/cheerios.aspx
which says 6g of sugar per 30g serving which is 7%

So, the cereals that are Ok are weetabix, ready brek and shreddies? Is that right?
