I have started weaning my ds not saying age as starts a riot on here but health visitor canme in and gave me the weaning lecture/talk

I am amazed this is what she says

the guidlines now say start babys on puried fruit and vegtables not rice or porrage why i asked she says because it fills babys up to fast and they put on more weight and this in ;later life leads to children over weight !! i was utterly shocked

i would think the baby rice was easiest to start babys on then work the way up to introducing them to different foods ie fruit and veg

i have started on her advice with fruit ds loves it

has anyone else been told this or is my hv talking nonsense ?/

well baby rice is pretty horrible stuff and fruit and veg have nutrients in, so I can see her point!

dilbertina · 23/06/2008 15:14

Have you tried eating baby rice?! stick to the fruit and veg IMO!

cafebistro · 23/06/2008 15:18

I started mine on baby rice and fruit puree mixed together and they loved it......

Bucharest · 23/06/2008 15:19

baby rice is empty calories

avenanap · 23/06/2008 15:19

Ermm.

Baby rice was never designed to be a meal for a baby, it was designed for them to have a texture other than milk in their mouth, which is why it is so bland. It is swallowed (eventually) which is why it is best made with milk. The policy when I worked with a HV last year was to start them with baby rice and move on to puried vegetables. I don't know whether porridge/rice fills them up. If it does then you are giving your baby too much as a bottle of formula/breast milk should be given after.

By the way, over feeding/feeding of crap and lack of exercise cause obesity.

I'm sure someone may be able to enlighten you further. The fruit may cause a problem, babies can taste the sugar and can get use to eating sweet things. When you offer her vegetables she may not want to eat them as they are not sweet. It's probably best to start on vegetables (after babay rice)for this reason.

if you ever run out of wallpaper paste, babyrice is a great substitute.

foxythesnowfox · 23/06/2008 15:21

To me, weaning is about first tastes and introducing a wide and varied diet. I suppose baby rice was considered a good choice insomuch that it introduces the concept of eating but the taste is predominantly milk. Milk is stil the main source of nourishment for the first 6 months at the very least.

Personally I skipped through the baby rice stage, except for mixing it with the purees. So I might give a vegetable puree followed by a fruit, or a fruit mixed with baby rice. I also gave fruit & rice/porridge for breakfast.

I think the first stage of weaning has little to do with filling the baby up IMHO.

Veg first IMO, they get used to having sweet food so the chances are they will refuse to eat everything except sweet things. The same applies to juice and water. They refuse to drink water if they have been having juice for a while because it is not sweet.

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 15:27

no but then she did tell me to close the curtains and have sex with dh in the adternoon or he's leave me

this was 10days after having 10lb4 dd1

I quickly disregarded anything she ever said to me after that

PinkPussyCat · 23/06/2008 15:30

Dizzy! WTF???

She should be struck off!

avenanap · 23/06/2008 15:30

OMG! Some are completely rubbish. mine told me to give ds weetabix in the morning (he was 4 months). I did this, 6 months later she told me off for this as it aggrivates their tummy . I havn't seen mine since ds was 1year. He's had no development checks, he's very bright though so I know he's OK. They knew where we were but they were obviously very busy giving mums inaccurate advice.

kiddiz · 23/06/2008 15:33

Yep...baby rice has the look and consistancy of wallpaper paste. Probably tastes like it too but couldn't say as I have never eaten either

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 15:34

PPC she was an absolute gem of a woman
first we found her wandering in the back garden as she couldn't find the door
then the sex education
next came the 'don't put baby on the kitchen counter and leave here there'

luckily I had nothing to do with her as dd1 was a great baby and when I was having problems with dd2 there was a new health visitor who was wonderful and couldn't have been more supportive

still as much as it makes me giggle I wonder about some poor young girl actually taking her advice on board

avenanap · 23/06/2008 15:34

The baby food in jars are no better. They all taste the same. Bland and tomato like. It's just to get them use to the texture of food.

Habbibu · 23/06/2008 19:59

dizzy! I think you and I may have same HV team - does said HV still work in the area?

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 20:55

Habbibu there surely cannot be two of them?!?!

local rumour is she went off on extended 'sick' leave and hasn't been seen since lol

Habbibu · 23/06/2008 20:57

Dunno - mine was a bit bonkers in a diff way - think she's now based further down the coast, (eastwards) but I suspect she still does baby clinics here... Just occurred to me that we must have same GP practice!

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 21:10

oh no, she can't still be going!?!?!?!?!?

we're with Tayview

Habbibu · 23/06/2008 21:12

Yes, us too. Oh - I want to know who she is now, but avoid libel. Hmm. I don't think it's the same one, tbh. How old is your youngest (and that's not counting the very youngest dixie!)?

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 21:14

dd1 is 5 in a couple of weeks and it certainly wasn't her with dd2 thank god as I really needed them that time!

Habbibu · 23/06/2008 21:17

Oh, no - won't be the same then. There's one I really really like, and if I get to have another baby will beg and plead with her to take me on. Or will bar door to HVs.

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 21:30

right, you're either going to have to CAT or email me re this lol

Habbibu · 23/06/2008 21:35

Have emailed - you might want to get last post deleted, mind - would hate to be the cause of ooodles of spam landing on you...

PuppyMonkey · 23/06/2008 21:39

When I was weaning dd2 last year, our HV said NOT to give too much fruit as it would lead to baby having a sweet tooth.

What a lot of shite HVs talk.

DD2 LOVED baby rice btw...
