BLW - foods like shepherd's pie with their fingers. Really? I mean REALLY?!

I know, I know, you can all chorus "it's messy - deal with it!" at me in unison... But I am just [shudder emoticon] at the thought!!

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 19/06/2008 12:31

yep you can just give them both the same. no preparing different meals.

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 12:36

Ok. Then I really do have to wait til 6m.
Will see at the time what new baby wants. I can see the attraction of blw and would like to try it, but not sure I have enough patiance(sp?), but would be nice as ds will be eating like you say and we can have family meals

AitchNunsnet · 19/06/2008 12:37

well you kinda have to wait until they pick up the food themselves... so for some that's just before 6 mos and for some after. same with walking... we don't expect them all to start on the same day.

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 12:42

True. We'll just have to see what happens I think.
Part of me thinks I should have waited a while for dc2, til I'd had enough time to think, ok, maybe this would've been easier and that would've been better etc. You know? DS is under 1 and I still don't know what I'm doing, haha

AitchNunsnet · 19/06/2008 12:44

join the club.

TinkerbellesMum · 19/06/2008 12:56

LBB, we'll have to start a February babies BLW group! I'll be doing it though may end up starting sooner if this one decides to follow suit and come in December

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 13:27

Yes we will! If yours is early, you'll be an old pro and will be able to direct us all in everything.

TinkerbellesMum · 19/06/2008 14:03

I've already done it once, not sure if it will help though, Tink is very easy going.

blot4 · 19/06/2008 14:08

I'll be starting the whole thing again too at about the same time (due early Jan - likely to turn up on Xmas day!).

I found with ds that I gave him food to play with eg toast, from about 5mo but he would just toy with it really. He didn't start taking any great quantities in until he was just over 6mo.

I've never touched babyrice - the idea makes me gag!

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 14:20

Babyrice is nasty. Knowing me, I'll start on pureed stuff, but not stay on wet food for too long IYKWIM, not sure if I like the idea of "proper" food from day one. That just me though

Umlellala · 19/06/2008 14:27

Aye, we just gave dd food and let her get on with it (a little bit of spoon feeding with yoghurt and soup, porridge maybe? and I used breadsticks with mushy stuff, like dips). She was entirely capable of using spoon and fork at about a year but gave up on cutlery a few months ago - she is having a brief flirtation with her new knife now but prefers fingers right now (she is 2.2 ) - but am not a messphobe, I thought toddlers were MEANT to be messy... Tbh she isn't too bad - she doesn't throw or drop food particularly (far less messy than her non BLW friend of the same age who spends the whole time chucking food on the floor ). I like it cos we eat our dinner and she eats hers. Easy.

(PS shepherds pie is dd's favourite - having it tonight and yes, she'll prob mainly use her fingers after trying to cut a pea with her knife )

TinkerbellesMum · 19/06/2008 14:47

Dropping food is very important to a child, it teaches them about gravity and tests their eye sight. It's more of a worry if they don't do that - not something to stress about but to mention to your HV or optician.

Umlellala · 19/06/2008 14:57

LOL yeah, but they are 2 now. Believe me, I let dd do as much playing, experimenting and texture exploring as she wants, but we stopped the chucking on the floor at about a year (and now have repainted over all the evidence) .

Think dd's eyesight is fine, thanks for the concern .

TinkerbellesMum · 19/06/2008 15:32

LOL I'm not concerned, she's obviously got good eyesight if she enjoys throwing food on the floor! Tink does it still occasionally - maybe if she can't see it, Mummy can't?

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 17:47

Yetihed
I looked at that link you posted. Good isn't it, got a few recipes off there and am going shopping in the morn.
Thanx for that

AitchNunsnet · 19/06/2008 17:49

TINKSMUM! you are pg? did i know this? CONGRATULATIONS!

that's my site, littleboyblue, thanks.

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 17:55

I thought it was yours Aitch, it is very useful. Wasn't gonna mention it to you personally as you must get fed up with it. Might even sign up and spend some time chatting in there too!

Do you go on the chat forums? Why do you use other sites if you got your own? (just asking, not being rude, I hope! )

TinkerbellesMum · 19/06/2008 18:06

I've dropped a few hints this week lol.

I'm about 8 weeks but only just found out. I feel normal, it was only because my nipples felt bruised I found out!

AitchNunsnet · 19/06/2008 20:09

i like both of 'em, lbb. apart from that i don't use any others...

and congrats again TM, that's wonderful news.

yetihed · 19/06/2008 21:04

Glad it was helpful, lbb. I might catch you on the forum over there one day soon and hear more of your BLW adventures!

whomovedmychocolate · 19/06/2008 21:08

Tinkjon - of course it's messy - and to be honest it's messy for a long time. DD still puts the spag bol on her head when she's finished even now (and she's 20 months old tomorrow). But so what. I just hose the little monkey down afterwards and have removed all traces of house pride from the dining room

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 21:35

Well i have been thinking and decided that in terms of ds, I can't just plonk stuff infront of him and leave him to get on with it as he been spoon fed for over 5 months, but I will cut down on the slop a bit and accompany it with more finger foods and slowly dry the food out IFKWIM, and for dc#2 (due in feb) I will wean with bland babyrice and the like but move onto a blw type plan sooner. Personally, I still don't think I'd be that happy with giving my lo a peiuce of proper food to start off with. I liked the gradual increase with the purees.
Having said all this, I didn't follow guidlines to wean ds and did what he was telling me too and what he wanted, so will just have to see what happens next time. Whatever I decide, I'm confident it'll be the right choice.
Gonna stop waffling now!
But yes will prob be on the other site soon.

nappyaddict · 19/06/2008 22:38

lbb - what i would personally do to get him eating more finger food is give him some finger food to play with before he has his mushy stuff. if he has that first then he might be more inclined to put it in his mouth. then if you think he hasn't eaten enough give him some of the mush. it probably won't take him long at all to work out how to get it from his hand into his mouth and then you can give up the mush forever!!

littleboyblue · 19/06/2008 22:52

Thanx nappy addict, we've been doing that depending on his mood at time, if he ok or has just woken up he has finger first but if he a grott bag he has mush first. Just one of those things that take time I suppose.
Every1 on here has been great with ideas and support, very helpful

littleboyblue · 20/06/2008 10:53

nappyaddict you're right actually, I don't think I've been doing enough to encourage independence and therefore ds is a bit behind developmentally(sp?) I think.
I really worry about feeding too much or too little. DS is a big boy (98th centile) and I don't want him to over/undereat already.
Today I'm going out for lunch and have made him some peanut butter sandwiches which I'll give with cucumber on the side and he can play with that while I eat my lunch, if he doesn't eat it I'll give a jar after and if he does eat it, I'll offer half the jar and some fruit.
Sound ok?

I've always been giving big meal at lunch and smaller meal at dinner, but that'll have to change when we all eat ogether.

Arrgghh
