Ds wont eat baby rice anymore??

Ive been weaning my ds for a few weeks now. He started with just baby rice for a few days and then tried apple and then pear at lunch and he had baby rice at tea, we then started with veg for lunch and he would have babyrice with a fruit mixed in for tea.

We have procressed to more than one veg at lunch and the amount of rice is increasing at tea, but ds has decided along with his milk that he doesnt want his rice at tea time.
We have probs getting most of his bottles down but he always scoffed his solids no probs.

Anyone else had this happen, what should i give him instead for tea??

Baby rice tastes like crap. Now he's tried different foods that taste better he won't want to touch the bbyrice. It was only designed for them to get use to a different texture in their mouth, not as a meal. How old is he?

NorthernLurker · 17/06/2008 21:10

maybe he wants to feed himself something at that time of day? Have you tried any finger food - how old is he? Or may be he just doesn't want to eat then. Two of my girls were on 2 meals a day till well after 9 months. They just didn't want a third meal. dd1 had breakfast and tea and dd2 had breakfast and lunch.

He is 23 weeks, advised to wean as we struggle to get him to take milk and have done for 5 weeks now!

How it works is (and the health visitor doesn't tell you this), you start off bland (ie, baby rice) because this gets them use to having something other than milk in their mouth and work upwards. Once the little darlings have tried something sweeter they won't touch the baby rice. It's the same for water and juice. If you give them water they are happy. Once they have had the sugar there's no chance of giving them juice. All babies have a sweet tooth. once you've given him something else he won't go back to baby rice. Try rice pudding instead. Still baby rice but sweeter.

LittleMissNorty · 17/06/2008 21:37

Its cos he is bored . Try mixing some of your fruit & veg puree's into the rice...

didsnbump · 17/06/2008 21:48

I do mix fruit or veg into the rice but he still wont eat it. I dont think its the Rice, i thinks its something about tea time. I can get him to eat and drink if he is laying down on the floor oddly enough, but obviously he cant eat laying down!

Have you tried giving him a bottle again?

didsnbump · 17/06/2008 21:59

Avenanap- What do you mean, he still has 4 bottles a day, of what we can get into him.

My ds HATED babyrice from the start so I used the flavoured ones, which he lapped up.
If you think it has something to do with tea time, can you not try feeding him a bit earlier/later and offer snacks?
If he over 6 months you can try other things as well, we have weetabix with banana and yogurt for our breakfast most mornings. Also the cow and Gate baby breakfasts are quite good. Ds's favourite is tropical sunrise, he 10m and still has it

Sidge · 17/06/2008 22:06

If he doesn't want to eat at teatime then don't feed him.

Do you always offer his bottles first? What milk is he on? Maybe he doesn't like the milk - some formula brands do taste worse than others.

Also baby rice is vile pap, with or without fruit and veg mixed in! Maybe just offer veg/fruit.

avenanap · 17/06/2008 22:07

Ok. What times is he having something to eat and what times is he having his bottles?

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 19:34

He has a 8oz bottle between 7/7.30am which he drinks no probs.

Then between 11/11.15am he has a 8oz bottle and solids, i offer the bottle first but after an onze he kicks up, so he then has veg, we have just started mixing two together. I then can only get him to finish most of his bottle when laying on the floor.

He then has a bottle at 2.30pm ish, which again can only get most in on the floor.

Then at 6pm ish he has a 8oz bottle and solids, again offered bottle first with no success, he was having babyrice and fruit but tonight just gave him apple and pear and had no probs thanks goodness, but again only would finish his milk on the floor!

Have you tried making the milk feeds and the solid feeds completely different activities? I know it means you prety much feeding all the time, but might be worth a go. I never gave milk at same time as solids, but then I dropped milk feeds very quickly.

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 20:45

How quick did u drop the milk feeds? Just wondering if im trying to get him to take to much?

I'll tell you, but don't take it that my way was right. I looked at it that the point of weaning was to move onto solids and away from milk. Like I said, I did solids and milk at different time from day 1. At 6m ds was having 7oz in morning first thing, breakfast at 9, solid lunch at 12, 4oz milk at 3, solid at 5, 7oz milk at 7 for bed. I dropped the 3 o'clock bottle after about 2 weeks, and dropped the morning bottle at about 8m as he wasn't eating breakfast. Now he just has the one bottle, but I make sure he has yogurts, cheeses and the like to top up the calcium and things.
Have you spoken to your hv?
Think you just gotta find what works for your baby

nappyaddict · 18/06/2008 21:09

i'm not surprised. it tastes disgusting!!

nappyaddict · 18/06/2008 21:11

also before they are 1 milk is more important. i always gave ds his milk first so he wouldn't fill up on solids when milk was what was more important.

littleboyblue · 18/06/2008 21:13

See, I did it all back to front!

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 21:16

I know all babys are different but just wondering if thats the case with mine to!

May run that past the hv next week and until then not try so hard with his 11am bottle and see how he goes with a little less. His been gaining 8oz a week so he certainly wont miss it weight wise!

littleboyblue · 18/06/2008 21:18

You gotta do what you feel is right, but milk is quite important for bones and teeth etc, but my ds just didn't want it.

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 21:21

Certainly seems the same with mine, Its like he is hungry so i give him a bottle and then the minute he tastes it his like sod of im not having that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the only reason he takes it laying on the floor is because he is distracted by being able to move freely!

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 18/06/2008 21:23

What about changing the formula? They all taste different. Are you using big enough teats?

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 21:28

Yeah im on the biggest teats so flow is def ok, have wondered about changing the milk but am scared to cause even more upset if u know what i mean!

We have been battling with getting bottles in for about 5 weeks now, He improved shortly when we started solids but then it returned worse.

Could it be teething, i dont think so as its been so long?

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 18/06/2008 21:32

I've changed formula twice without any problems, didn't seem to upset belly or anything, and if it does, you'll know what it is and it'll only last a few days.
With teething, I think they tend to go off solids and prefer the milk as it not so much work and doesn't involve pressing the sore gums together.
Don't know what else to suggest. When can you speak to hv and does she know what she talking about, mine's a bit silly!

didsnbump · 18/06/2008 21:54

She can be quite good, but not always. Wont see her till next week but can ring anytime. Why did u change formula if u dont mind me asking?
