Alternative to yogurt

Hello,

Where we are now, we are unable to find 100% natural yogurt. Most of the stuff on the supermarket shelves are low fat version, or with added ingredients - sugar, fruit bits, etc.

Are there alternatives to yogurt? Creme fresh, kefir, etc? Definitely not making yogurt at home.

um, just buy normal natural yog thus or similar

or Yeo Valley is nice

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 11:41

Ah - MrsBadger!

Dh went looking on Saturday, to one of the biggest and better supermarket but no luck.

Guess DD would have to do without yogurt for the time being.

Definitely not creme fresh?

creme frâiche is ok for adding to things but I wouldn't sit down and eat a pot of it iyswim

I simply can't believe your supermarket doesn't have any wholemilk plain yog

CatIsSleepy · 12/05/2008 11:45

what about plain greek yoghurt?

NotQuiteCockney · 12/05/2008 11:45

Normally supermarkets have plain yog, as MrsB says. Own brand, Yeo Valley or Rachels. I think it's often only in big pots, and not necessarily right in with the flavoured stuff.

Health food stores always stock it, too, although they often bias towards the low fat stuff.

witchandchips · 12/05/2008 11:46

yeo valley is sometimes hidden away in the organic section. What about Greek yoghurt?

MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 11:49

plain fromage frais thus would be ok too

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 11:49

Forgot to mention that we are not in the UK, and English is not the first language here.

Will try to look for Greek yogurt. It is a bit of a guessing game trying to understand what is written on the food label.

Definitely not creme fresh then A pot sitting in the fridge.

where are you?

MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 11:50

creme frâiche would be lovely for eg adding to a fruit puree, but not for eating alone, IMO

MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 11:51

(NB if you can get hold of live yoghurt to start it making yoghurt at home from full cream milk is dead easy, no special kit required)

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 11:52

Witchandchips - we are in Moscow.

MrsBadger - Thanks for the tips. How do you get that 'a' on your keyboard? She is just 6 months, is it too young? Should I wait a bit longer before giving it to her?

NotQuiteCockney · 12/05/2008 11:54

Isn't kefir just Russian yogurt, kinda?

Although, thinking about it, I think I tried it once and it was fizzy [nauseous]. But a baby wouldn't know that yogurt shouldn't be fizzy, right?

MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 11:57

I'm on a Mac so it is alt+i then the letter

6m is fine for yoghurt

Kefir is fermented - not sure how much alcohol is left in it but not sure I'd want to try it out on dd...

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 11:57

NQC - Usually for cooking, we replace yogurt with kefir. But as first time parents, we are clueless what is ok to give to DD.

Checked Wikipedia - kefir is slightly different from yogurt. So not too sure.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 11:57

(oh and if you can't find anything, sugar won't kill her )

NotQuiteCockney · 12/05/2008 11:59

Ooops - MrsB is right. The % alcohol is at most 3% but that's enough to get past the stomach acids.

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 12:00

MrsBadger - Ahhh.... We are on a mac too, just started few months back. Always been on microsoft. Since we are on this subject, where is the delete button on a mac keyboard? I have to use backspace all the time.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 12/05/2008 12:00

If you heat up kefir, the alcohol will evaporate, so it will be fine - alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water.

Oooh, or you could buy plain yogurt that was fine, but low fat, and add cream or creme fraiche or something else fatty to boost it a bit?

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 12:12

NQC - Thanks for the suggestions. Will see how to boost fat content in the low fat yogurt.

Just started weaning so will have some time to think about it.

(delete:
between the alphabetic keypad and the numeric keypad there's a block of 9 keys, above the 'arrows' - delete is the bottom left of those. Looks like a fat arrow pointing right with an X in it)

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 12:24

MrsB - Been staring hard at my keyboard, but cant find such key. Am using a wireless - can surf and type while feeding DD.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 12:26

is it a laptop?

hbmummy · 12/05/2008 12:33

A wireless mac keyboard. Nice, but just cant get use to it. Cant find the delete key, cant or dont know how to alt-tab between windows.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 12/05/2008 13:14

don't know how to tab between windows either, sorry

for tabbed browsing in Firefox it's
ctrl + tab for next tab
shift + ctrl + tab for previous tab...
