DS refusing spoon. need help with BLW

Hi all,

I'm a bit worried about ds who is 9 months old. Always been very distracted at meal time (solids, not milk feeds).

Anyway, it has now reached an all time low of him hitting the spoon and crying when ever I try and feed hi purees and mash.

Short of holding his nose and force feedibg him I see no way of spoon feeding him!

For the past few days me and dh have been giving him more finger foods and going down the BLW route.

My main concern is that he seems to be eating less than a baby sparrow would do! He is a big lad (25lbs) and is also very tall and active.

We gave him some toast for breakfast but half a strip was all he had before he got bored and just didn't want to know anymore. We tried him with a scotch pancake which he really enjoyed ripping up into crumbs but only had one mouthful to eat.

For dinner he had a tiny bit of my jacket potato and a tiny bit of rusk.

For tea he had a couple of tiny bites of sausage roll.

Will he starve?? I mean, he is only taking about 20 oz of milk now as well so I'm really worried that he will just never get the hang of solids. Please help!

I'll expand on my opinions about purees, shall I? It's only recently that parents have made 'real food' into purees, 40 years ago when I was a baby (gulp) everything was brown mush in a tiny little tin, made by only a couple of companies. IIRC premade babyfood popped up in America in the early 50's and came over here pretty quickly, promoted as a way to give good nutrition to your baby(rationing was still in force).Since then, It's become big business, with ever more brands coming onto the market - what we forget is that it's still essentially processed food, but it's so ingrained into our psyche that babies need purees, that it's a huge leap of faith to wean at a more natural stage of development, one which even the NHS is unwilling to take, just in case the neds wean their kids on mcdonalds!
And the reason babies were given slop in the first place? because back then, it wasn't thought odd to give a baby mash and meat stock at 6 weeks old,and to get the extra food in it had to be pretty much liquid. now we know so much more about the implications of early weaning and the development of physical skills, they shouldn't be needed at all.
am i rambling? I think I may have OD'ed on Piriton

Ahhh I do see your point Jamila. Well no danger of my ds having any more purees for the forseeable future. Just showed him a spoon full of his once favourite apple and banana puree, the very sight of a spoon had him whimpering and trying to get away. Anyway, he has had some cheese on toast for tea and it seems to have gon down quite well. Lots of it left on the floor but some of it deffinitely got eaten!

He also had a fair bit of potato for lunch and a slice of tomato (yuk, I hate tomatoes but lo seems to have enjoyed it!)

He still only seem to be eating a tiny ammount but with everyday it is increasing and his gagging seems to be decreasing. Maybe he will survive on BLW afterall!
