Before reading this forum today I hadn't even heard of BLW, I had armed myself with the Annabel Karmel books and was online to buy a hand blender when I discovered mumsnet.

Now I'm seriosly considering BLW, can anyone tell me if this is now considered the best way forward, has anyone had any bad experiences of BLW?

My daugher is 18 wks and I was going to start weaning at 20wks, do I have to wait till shes 6 months if I start BLW?

Where can I find out info on it (i.e how do you start, what foods etc)?

P.S What does DD and DS stand for?

nah, as i said, most blw mums do what you did and load and hand over from the beginning. i think you're barking up the wrong tree tbh.

From what I've read in this and other threads BLW seems to be all about just placing food in front of baby and expecting them to pick it up and eat it without any prompting or intervention. Is that not correct?

Aitch · 17/06/2010 22:15

that's correct, but that non-interventionist stance also includes letting them grab a spoonful of sloppy yoghurt out of your hand as well. believe me, i know whereof i speak.

and anyway, i have known of literally thousands of blw babies, never heard of problems with introducing cutlery. children want to stab things, they want to emulate their parents... ergo, no problem.

oh, and wrt to the teachers complaining that kids can't use cutlery at school... presumably, given that blw is a fairly recent phenomenon, these are traditionally-weaned children?

I have 3 children.

Dd1 is 10, was weaned onto purees at just about 4 months (doing what I was told) and to this day is incredibly fussy.

Ds is 8, was weaned in a more blw way but with purees too at 4 months and is a reasonable eater, if with a rather limited range of likes.

Dd2 is 6, was blw at 6 months and eats anything and everything. She'll try anything once and can even put away a hotter curry than dh!

I do tend to think the weaning time/style had something to do with this, but am not sure if it was just cos I was less organised more laid back with the younger ones!
