Any Tips?

Weetabix isn't particularly nutritious. Most cereal isn't. What about eggs?

Cazzovuoi · 26/09/2023 10:25

Cereal and porridge are not nutritious! They’re full of carbohydrates which digest as sugar.

Try eggs or avocado or similar protein and fat filled foods.

I’m a healthcare professional working with people with metabolic syndrome so I wish more mothers were educated about proper nutrition.

We’ve had a 6 year old in to clinic last month with type 2 diabetes who has already had multiple teeth extracted. Type 2 is a disease that used to be called “adult onset” 😞

HowcanIhelp123 · 26/09/2023 10:29

Personally I would say porridge and some cereals can be nutritious as part of a balanced breakfast (ie depending what you put with it). If you're eating coco pops it isn't, some granola with fruit and yoghurt can be fine.

There's lots of other options though including toast, omelettes etc.

JustAMinutePleass · 26/09/2023 10:31

DS was like this at 6 months - I made it with 100% milk, added grated carrot and raisons for texture, and it became his favourite meal. You should just experiement

BBno4 · 26/09/2023 10:31

Eggs, healthy pancakes, toast.

MontblancTheSecond · 26/09/2023 10:31

Try something else, like bread, omelet or a piece of fruit.

Cowlover89 · 26/09/2023 10:33

Just keep trying! 😊

FallingAutumnLeaf · 26/09/2023 10:34

Sensible child!
You don't have to have toast or cereal for breakfast! What does he like to eat. Work from there.

Devilsmommy · 26/09/2023 10:37

My little one won't touch plain Weetabix but he loves the banana flavour one, only made with toddler soya as he won't touch it done with his soya formula 😂

FarmersWife3 · 26/09/2023 10:37

Pancakes (banana pancakes were my DS fav), natural yogurt, fruit/veg (mashed/pureed if needed), scrambled eggs? My two never liked cereal, but there is plenty of other options. Lots of good ideas if you search online.

viques · 26/09/2023 10:39

Beans, tortilla, eggs, cheese sandwich or on toast, a slice of cold chicken, bacon or sausage once a week, natural yogurt - all offering decent nutrition. Add in a piece of fruit and a drink and your child will be fine.

Cereals were a 20 th century invention, heavily and cleverly advertised, often full of sugars, the real nutrition in a bowl of cereal comes not from the cereal but from the milk you pour on to it.

Completely disagree with PP, porridge is perfectly nutritious for a child. CHILDREN NEED CARBOHYDRATES. Mix it with some good fats like a nut butter.

I used to make the porridge really thick and let it cool so it cools in lumps which they can pick up themselves. Sounds disgusting but mine wouldn’t take a spoon.

I do too! Food police need to get a grip on here. Cereal is perfectly fine. My son loves weetabix and porridge. Loves either banana or honey mixed in.

DynamicK · 26/09/2023 10:49

Maybe he likes things he can pick up?
Try oat pancake recipes
Boiled eggs or omelettes
Breakfast muffins
French toast

You can bake them in batches and freeze.

Sontagsleere · 26/09/2023 10:52

Another who disagrees with pp re porridge/ weetabix! Yes they contain carbohydrates which is a food group that forms part of a balanced diet. Just like those who vilify baby rice - balanced diets contain carbohydrates. Try adding a protein to help fill him but also a tip I got from a consultant paediatric allergist for one of mine, when I was concerned re nutrients on a limited diet was Ready Brek is fortified (iron, B vitamins etc) and helps get nutrients in, along with a fortified milk whereas organic porridge for example isn't. Keep offering with maybe yoghurt (essential calcium for growing bones) at the tip of the spoon of porridge. Good luck!

If you're a healthcare professional @Cazzovuoi then I'm very worried. I suspect you've done some dodgy nutrition certificate online.

Eating porridge and cereal will not give you diabetes or get your teeth removed, FFS

Porridge in particular is unprocessed, gives you fibre and vitamin E

Children need carbs. Adults need carbs, just not in agricultural labourer-sized portions.

BoohooWoohoo · 26/09/2023 11:06

Would he prefer finger food breakfast like toast, fruit and pancakes?

WeWereInParis · 26/09/2023 11:08

No need to bother educating fathers 🙄

OP, will he eat omelette? Scrambled eggs? Toast? My DD loved porridge with a mashed banana stirred in. There are lots of options for breakfast besides porridge and weetabix. Although I completely disagree with PPs that porridge is bad - we have plain oats and milk, it's fine.

poppet131 · 26/09/2023 11:18

Pancakes made with oats or ready brek? So it’s one banana, one egg, sprinkle of chia seeds (optional) and small handful of porridge oats or ready brek. Stir and fry in butter. It’s freezer friendly too x

YouveGotAFastCar · 26/09/2023 11:19

Mine is 21 months and has probably eaten porridge four times and never Weetabix.

There's plenty of other healthy breakfasts, and everyone has preferences.

PinkRoses1245 · 26/09/2023 11:22

Weetaxbix isn’t very nutritious. Porridge is, assuming no sugar and with fruit. I’d try other things like natural yoghurt, fruit, eggs, avocado, mushrooms, pancakes without sugar

MissJam · 26/09/2023 11:31

I ate coco pops every single day through school from aged 4 until 15 (or I skipped breakfast completely as a grumpy teen) as I hate milk. I was brought up by my grandparents who (still) are healthy eaters. I don’t have type 2 diabetes nor am I obese… balanced diet is the key. Don’t listen to those scaremongering! Chocolate biscuits for breakfast everyday probably isn’t the best but one bowl of cereal 🙄

Im also struggling with ‘breakfast’ items for my one year old. He’s awaiting a dietician appointment in January (only taken 11 months once we are seen) about CMPA and he’s really not keen on eggs either so it’s a bit of a challenge!

Good luck OP 😊

EmmaPaella · 26/09/2023 11:34

Porridge or Weetabix is completely fine for breakfast (!) but if he doesn’t like it, what about sourdough toast dipped in runny boiled egg? Fruit? Blueberries and oatcakes?

Cowlover89 · 26/09/2023 11:36

I laced my weetabix with sugar and gave my son some 😱

ReluctantFishLady · 26/09/2023 11:38

You can make porridge fingers that hw can pick up. My son loved these as a baby. Can flavour them with whatever really. If you are sticking with a bowl, try mixing in banana and peanut butter it's really nice.

Porridge Fingers

Porridge fingers for baby-led weaning are so quick and easy to make and are a great way to serve oatmeal to babies. The recipe can easily be modified to include a range of different fruits or veggies.
