Breakfast ideas for baby that doesn't like weetabix or porridge?

Purple89 · 16/06/2023 09:32

Hi all, my DD is 7 months, absolutely loved food when first introduced. Had a blip whilst her first two teeth were coming through, now starting to enjoy food again. She generally eats really well at lunch and dinner. I give a mix of mash/pureed food plus finger foods - favourites are banana, broccoli, avocado for finger foods. I do get a bit nervous when she is eating as she is quite over ambitious with her bites at times and we have had a couple of vomiting incidents. But generally good.

We have introduced breakfast and this is the one meal we struggle with. We have tried weetabix and porridge, she will have a couple of teaspoons then she grabs the spoon and smashes it about and won't eat anymore. It might be she doesn't have enough of an appetite - she has a good sized bottle an hour before. But to test this I gave her a wafer and she gobbled it up. I wonder if she would be better if I gave her finger foods at breakfast as I do think she prefers feeding herself.

Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations for breakfasty finger foods? I have given her toast before but got super nervous at the size of her bites. Perhaps I should swallow the nerves and go ahead with that?

Thank you all in advance!

Scrambled egg, Greek yogurt, chopped berries, banana, toast.

My son hated being spoon fed from tiny, I used to make his porridge really thick and he could use spoon himself pretty young then ( or hands!)

Mushroo · 16/06/2023 09:36

Avocado and on toast
yoghurt and fruit
banana ‘flapjacks’ (baked oats)
omelette with broccoli

AndTheSurveySays · 16/06/2023 09:37

Cut up omelette
Hash browns
Homemade oat/porridge bars
Pancakes
Savoury muffins

InDubiousBattle · 16/06/2023 09:38

Crumpets, toasted t cakes, scrambled eggs, toast, strawberries, mango, pancakes rolled up.

Purple89 · 16/06/2023 09:46

Wow thank you all so much this is really helpful!

I should have mentioned that DD has CMPA so I use Aptamil Pepti 1. I wonder if I can get dairy free yoghurt she could have? 🤔

With the crumpets, do you toast them and serve them in strips?

The omelette and fruit are brilliant ideas, definitely giving these a try.

I'd just feed her what she likes at lunch time for breakfast as well. There isn't any reason for breakfast to be cereal/porridge or other similar food.

Fleur405 · 16/06/2023 09:51

I’d say similar to pps - pancakes, baked porridge, porridge fingers, banana bread. My daughter loves banana and oatmeal muffins (I think the recipe came from the weaning gp on instagram)

GracePalmer33 · 16/06/2023 09:59

My little one is the same. She seemed to like porridge the first few times but now she just throws it about and smashes the table and I don't think any actually ends up being swallowed
I've tried a few things but the only thing she seems to actually attempt to properly eat at breakfast is toast strips (and even then just a few
chews and not sure what is actually being swallowed). Not the best nutrition but she eats a bit more at lunch so I'm trying not to stress. She's only 7 months.

@Purple89 my friend is allergic to cows dairy, she recommends the alpro natural yogurt if you’re ok with soy and Tesco also do a goat milk natural yogurt.

Justchooseone · 16/06/2023 10:04

Jo Wicks wean in 15 was a hit for recipes in our house. DS loved the raspberry oaty bites and we all eat the beetroot overnight oats regularly!!

DeflatedAgain · 16/06/2023 10:10

Banana pancakes

Sarahtm35 · 16/06/2023 10:13

I wouldn’t overthink it just give her some fruit or something. At 7 months breast milk/formula is their main source of nutrition and solids are just a practice for when they’re older.

Sarfar45 · 16/06/2023 10:29

Scrambled egg, beans on toast, cheese on toast, avocado on toast. Over night oats would be a good alternative to porridge especially when it's so hot.
2 ingredient pancakes, which is basically mashed banana and egg mashed up into batter and fried.
Or just simple stuff like a banana and a bit of yogurt.

If you can afford- ive got a little omelette make that is £20 and does the most perfect little pancakes and omlettes…
My LO loves these easy pancakes I make.

one banana, one egg, one Tbs peanut butter, half teaspoon baking powder, - mix together and makes two perfect pancakes!
or omelettes (one egg in each space) I chop up all sorts of veggies, courgette, peas, asparagus etc used to chop them tiny and got bigger over time, soemtimes Spanish omelette with little bits of cooked potato, onion, peppers, olive, paprika, left over meat etc.
the easiest omelette I make is I add frozen veg first (like peas, corn, green beans, carrot mix etc). I always add the veg / meat first and let that cook for a bit then the egg mix. Soemtimes sprinkle on tesco plant based Parmesan or another alternative.

my little one occasionally has a temporary lactose & soy intolerance and we still prefer some of the alternatives we used. Plant based Philadelphia is better than the regular IMO.
violife does plant based cheeses too that are nice (love their cream cheese and love violife Greek and LO loves it chopped up into cubes). There are various yoghurts too we add chopped fruit too…
french toast?
mini savoury muffins! I make ones with peas and broccoli lol.

I like trying different breads for toast - our current favourite is a tesco oatmeal one… and trying out different nut butters. Soemtimes a nut butter with a tiny bit of jam…
mashed avocado on toast?
mashed banana on toast?
plant based cheddar on toast?

sorry if soem of this has already been suggested lol.
my sister recently made a plant based potato salad with vegan Mayo and asparagus which my LO loved and we took home leftovers and had it for breakfast because why not lol.
all sorts of fruit/ fruit fingers.
ps my LO doesn’t like porridge either lol.

This! The mantra we always heard was "food before one, is just for fun". My DS pretty much solely ate those eye-wateringly expensive Ella's Kitchen fruit pouches and melty sticks until he was at least 18 months old 😅 He's now 6 and happily tucks into pretty much anything. At your DD's age her main nutrition still comes from milk, so take the pressure off both of you. If she eats anything, great. If she decides she doesn't want to, also great. 😊 X

SapphosRock · 18/06/2023 06:50

At that age my DC loved eggy bread or smooth almond butter on toast. I'd cut both into fingers easy for them to hold.

You could try adding some puréed fruit to porridge to make it more interesting - I used to squeeze a bit if of Ella's kitchen pouch on top.

Cut up omelette was usually popular.

Just wanted to come here and say. Don't be afraid to try those breakfasts again at some point. My son turned up his nose to both porridge and weetabix initially. Now, at 17 months, all he will eat for breakfast is weetabix! It's been that way for many months now. They go through phases of liking and disliking different things (or more than likely, textures!)

bumblebee2235 · 18/06/2023 09:28

Overnight oats? With purée fruit, cinnamon, melted choc chips, low sugar maple syrup ect for a few topping ideas? (Obvs it depends on what your comfortable them eating) you can warm overnight oats so it's not always cold. I blitz oats in a blender before prep sometimes for a smoother texture.

Or scrambled eggs, mashed avocado

Homemade smoothies? I usually have whole milk, blueberries, strawberries, kale with spoonful of oats. You can make smoothie bowls where you don't blend as much and eat with spoon. Sometimes I make a vanilla strawberry smoothie, I just add in a drop of vanilla essence.

Not sure if any of these ideas are baby friendly.. not quite approached this age quite yet. But I eat like a child 😂 super fussy and weird with textures

Just saw you don't have dairy, I use chocolate oat milk sometimes for health reasons, I imagine using a vanilla or chocolate oat milk would be super tasty with overnight oats or smoothies

Purple89 · 18/06/2023 13:38

Thank you all so much for your ideas these are amazing!! I've added a lot to the online food shop this week 😋

Banana pancakes - mashed banana, flour or oats, and an egg. Can add a bit of milk to loosen and some cinnamon for added flavour Smile

I then serve with chopped up fruit, yogurt and sometimes peanut butter spread on the pancakes.

NeverendingCircus · 18/06/2023 14:16

greek yoghurt with mashed banana or fruit puree stirred in
wholemeal toast with unsalted cream cheese or smooth nut butter if you have introduced that yet

NeverendingCircus · 18/06/2023 14:18

Sorry - meant to say if you don't do dairy there are gorgeous vegan greek-yoghurt style products - Alpro is good.

unicorncrumble · 18/06/2023 22:24

At 7 months have you tried baby cereals? They're decisgned for weaning so you should be able to add you pepti milk.
