Mine liked pittas and I found those better as it's harder for the filling to fall out.

My 9 month old has dairy lea sandwiches - somebody will probably tell me he shouldn't but he loves them. Also banana but I do need ideas to so will watch this thread for more. I was wondering about peanut butter and will give it a go - we only have crunchy in the house though so may have to buy smooth.

Tommy · 15/02/2008 14:15

yes - pitta good too. Butter and ham is fine - we are veggie so didn't think about ham

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/02/2008 14:16

tortilla wraps are great too. Mine love them with brie and squashed grapes or cranberry sauce.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2008 14:30

lentil loaf is really good - consistency of peas pudding so doesn't drop out and very filling and good for you!

seeker · 15/02/2008 14:31

A lot of babies like hoummus - but you need to be careful of the salt content in the bought ones.

Cream cheese and cucumber or some tiny scraps of smoked salmon (but again be careful about the salt)

Marmite. Peanut, almond or cashew butter.

twelveyeargap · 15/02/2008 14:35

DD has been eating ham sandwiches (without salt of course) since she was 7 months. Likewise chicken, grilled cheese.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/02/2008 14:37

Whenever I travel I also make a couple of lunchboxes up with various chopped mixed veg and fruit for them to pick at. And take a pack of rice cakes/ saltines.

Avocado is a good portable food and v nutritious.

Tommy · 15/02/2008 15:45

recipe please stealthpolarbear!

Habbibu · 15/02/2008 15:48

Avocado mashed with cream cheese is one our our favourites. Also samosas, little pasties (pastry filled with leftover stew/curry/whatever will fit). Aitch's carrot, cumin and cheese pittas are nice - mix grated carrot and cheese with a little cumin - stuff a warmed pitta, then put in the toaster till the cheese melts and holds everything together.

LittleHab used to love tinned red salmon (skinless and boneless) mashed up on a sandwich.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/02/2008 16:01

Also for long journeys I find it best to keep the fillings and bread separate and just make them up when needed, that way they don't get soggy.

NoBiggy · 15/02/2008 16:12

Yes Stealthpolarbear, I need to know about lentil loaf too.

Cream cheese is favourite here, marmite if I'm making sandwiches for both DDs. I usually have humzingers, goodies bars and raisin boxes tucked away somewhere too.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2008 16:27

They're actuall the "Alison's Lentil and Cheese Wedges " off Aitch's blog but I make a loaf instead
I do put the garlic in and it's lovely - we eat loads of it

Again, I know this blog is coming across a bit pulsetastic but as it happens we do eat a lot of them. And you have to admit, these cheesy wedges do sound delicious.

"Another lentil recipe for you - v popular with LittleE (and her daddy too - surprisingly!!)

8 oz red lentils
3/4 pint water
1 large onion
1 oz butter
4 oz grated cheese
1 tsp mixed herbs
1 egg
1 oz breadcrumbs
salt & pepper - for adults!!

Cook the lentils in the water until soft, and all the liquid is absorbed
Chop the onion finely and fry in the butter until soft.
Combine all the ingredients and press into an oiled 9" tin.
Bake at Gas 5 for around 30 minutes.
Allow to cool slightly then cut into wedges

These might be even tastier with a bit of garlic in?"

NoBiggy · 15/02/2008 16:34

Thank you very much - I'll note that down now.

Tommy · 15/02/2008 16:35

oh - have made that before - thanks anyway stealth - didn't think about mushing it up and putting it in a sandwich!

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2008 16:36

a girl i worked with used to get leftovers from last night in a sandwich - one day was spaghetti bolognaise!
