Baby allergic to potato?

Yupbabs · 03/04/2023 21:43

My 8 month old had a tiny bit of mash potato off the end of my finger just to try. My dad made and it he put butter and milk in there. A few hours later she was napping on me and I noticed she had a small red rash on her cheek with some raised bumps.

she has had yoghurt and cheese and she has coke and gate formula. So it can’t be the milk or butter.
when can I try her with potato again? I wanted to try her with sweet potato but I’m not sure if that would be the same as normal potato?

Sweet potato is a different plant family so should be just fine.

Have you tried her with tomatoes yet? (They are related to potato)

Teakind · 03/04/2023 21:48

It’s definitely possible to be allergic to potato but could be something else. How soon after she had eaten did the rash appear? Had anything come in to contact with her face? And environmental allergens a possibility? A dog/cat perhaps?

Id mention it to the GP and ask for an allergy referral just to be on the safe side.

CatOnTheChair · 03/04/2023 21:55

Has she had tomatoes, peppers or aubergine? Along with potato they are all part of the nightshade family.
Sweet potatoes are different.

Are you sure the cheek rash is from the potato, not a different soap in a flannel or similar if you are visiting somewhere?

DelilahBucket · 03/04/2023 22:00

Are you sure it isn't a teething rash?

Yupbabs · 06/04/2023 13:54

@CatOnTheChair she has had a small amount tomato sauce in pasta

If she’s 8 months old why is she only trying tiny bits of food off your finger? Confused

Because she had never tried potato before and if you have an ounce of knowledge of weaning you’d know that you can only give them small amounts of foods if they have never been introduced to them before just in case they have a reaction.

and why is it your business? People like you make me want to deactivate my account. She doesn’t even eat that much food. MYOB.

not to mention, she is MY baby. I can give her as much or as little of a certain food I want.

she’s not your bloody child. piss off.

@Yupbabs bit of an ott reaction there

supersonicginandtonic · 06/04/2023 20:56

Wow @Yupbabs what a rude response. Ice weaned five children and never given them just a tiny bit on the end of my finger. Not something any health professional or book I've read, or professional experience, has told me that either.

If they’re accusing me of ONLY giving my baby bits of food then they deserve that response. As if I’m depriving my child of food.

they read my post and some how came to the conclusion I feed her little bits of food off my finger and don’t give her anything else LOL I hate people on here

Maybe you’ve never heard that advice before because you weaned all your kids 25 years ago lol

Don't rise to the nitpicker trying to wind you up op. Ignore

FlowersAndBonnets · 06/04/2023 22:54

Why are you being so rude?

I know a lot about weaning; I spent months researching it when weaning my own.

Potato is not a common allergen, so you don’t need to give it in small doses to see if there’s a reaction. Common allergens like egg, peanuts etc should be introduced one at a time yes, but this isn’t applicable here.

You are aware babies can have exactly what you’re having from 6 months old, right? You just need to mind the sugar/salt content, make sure it’s cut appropriately for their age and no honey before 1.

But they can have full meals straight away and actually that’s a great way to wean them as it allows them to learn how to take appropriate size bites, chew and swallow, explore taste and textures, use cutlery and come to understand how meal times work by fitting in with the family.

Thank you.
I don’t know how people have got so much spare time to try to get on others’ nerves
I asked a genuine question and now I have people trying to accuse me of depriving my child of food

Nobody has done that Confused Is weaning not going very well and that’s why you’re reacting so aggressively?

it did come across as if you were trying to make me out to be depriving her or something.

It’s not common but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t allergic to it.

There was butter and milk in the potatoes as well. But she has had dairy so I doubt it’s the butter or milk. I’ve tried her on other dairy products since and there has been no reaction.

she only takes a few bites and then gets fed up with what’s in front of her. She seemingly doesn’t know how to chew either even though she has seen us eat hundreds of times. She couldn’t even eat toast.

That isn’t the reason why, no.
But also, weaning isn’t going well.
