Has anyone had success with sippy cups for EBF babies?

Hi

My baby is 5 months and EBF. She hates the bottle. I've tried it with freshly expressed milk, not in the same room, when she isn't so hungry, when she's hungry, when she's tired, when she's playful, basically every mood she could be in and she just plays with the teat. Ive tried several bottles too.

ANYWAYS, someone suggested trying an open cup or a sippy cup as she's approaching 6 months.

Has anyone successfully given milk to baby from a cup? She has good head control, but not quite ready for solids just yet. Still a little floppy.

I'm just desperate for a couple of hours without the kids. I can time it when she's napping, but I don't want to be in a situation where she wakes earlier and she's hungry and there's no way of feeding her.

Yes, dd had a sippy cup at nursery with expressed milk because she had never used a bottle. We used the non-valve Tommee Tippee cup given to us by the NHS at a weaning class, I am not at all sure you can still get them.

My child was not EBF and had
a bottle from birth but only until about 3 month old then we ditched the bottle and he was mostly BF but would take a bottle of I was out but this was rare. He never had confusion or refused it.

when he started nursery at 11 months they gave him formula in a cup. He had only had expressed milk before but took the milk okay from a cup.

I can't remember when we introduced it - probably 5 or 6 ish months, but we used a Babycup and it was perfect. Initially for water, but when my DS started at the childminder he drank milk from it too. He'd always refuse a bottle, so the cups were the only thing that worked

Yes my little girl is exactly the same. I introduced a munchkin 360 cup. Took a couple weeks but she figured it out. I also did the munchkin ones with a straw. She actually prefers that. Also took a week or so to figure it out (6 months old). She's 1 next week and will now happily drink milk from it so I'm only feeding 3 times in 24hours which is huge progress as she would never touch a bottle no matter which brand I tried.

Thanks! @PutItInTheFuckingBasket I actually already have these from DD1 but haven't attempted using them with DD2 yet.

I also have the 360 cup but DD1 just could not figure it out, so I never thought to try it with DD2. @abbs1 Do they just have to suck and the liquid comes out?

When I weaned off the breast my Dd went straight onto a Doidy cup and never had a bottle. A bit messy to start but soon got the hang of it!

missingthewinchesterboys · 17/02/2023 22:28

Yes. I was using it to give my EBF baby gaviscon before feeds.
She was using one from about 3 months.

We brought to cheap ones that come in rainbows colours. And a dido cup as well

Redebs · 17/02/2023 22:31

Do they still make Rosti bottles?
They were for babies with clefts, but would work for breastfed too

Judgyjudgy · 17/02/2023 22:32

Yep, sippy cup was fine but he never took the bottle. I think it was a tommee tippee one that had the two side handles

jammmmm · 17/02/2023 22:34

Thanks for all your suggestions!!

Just to clarify your babies were drinking a good amount of milk? Enough to fill up their bellies.

You can also try bbox sippy V2 with the straw, these are great

BouncingWorms · 17/02/2023 22:38

Dd1 had an open cup from 5 months but didn’t master a sippy cup til almost a year. Dd2 managed the sippy cup at 6 months. So c try both.

jammmmm · 18/02/2023 21:11

DD2 took really well to the open cup today!

I only expressed about an ounce to try and she probably drank about half as she was getting used to the cup.

I really want to try formula this way so I don't have to express but I have a feeling she'll hate the taste.

My son struggled with it but he was bottle fed but my ebf daughter figured it out quite easily. Easier than the straw one. She prefers the straw one now though so maybe just offer both and see which little one prefers.

I cup fed from birth with a special newborn cup from the hospital because of tongue tie and it's more natural for a EBF as it relies on lapping rather than sucking (lapping is the same movement as when they are on the boob). So you may have a greater chance of success with this definitely!
