High chair recommendations for BLW

My LO is 21 weeks and I'm currently researching the best high chairs for BLW as I know it will be messy.

Any recommendations?

My baby was sitting unsupported on the floor at 4.5 months and we didn't wean until 6 months. She still seemed to flop around in the antilop. It was just too big, and she wasn't a small baby.

Sorry, I assumed you meant a younger baby. Must just be an individual thing then. DS didn't get to a sit until 6 months but I was putting him in it before then with a sippy cup of water so I could eat dinner in peace! He was average sized.

Stokke trip trap chair

Never needed a footrest, don't they just help them climb out sooner?!

Kazoola · 20/07/2022 22:44

I also hate the antilop, for the same reasons as the previous poster. Had a big cushioned chicco chair with my first and always swore I'd get the antilop with a second, for ease. But actually they're similar effort to clean. My baby looked loads more comfy in the chicco (so much so he fell asleep during dinner a couple of times!) and it folded away. I miss that chair.

3 BLW children here. 2 very close together and consequently between my house and grandparents houses etc I have had 6 different highchairs, 2 of the ikea ones. Do I get expert status?

This is the one I am using with my youngest and it is a dream because it is so essy to clesn. The rray detaches rrally easily and washes really well (althiugh it does help that my sink is now massive and it fits in). The chair wipes down rrally well.

I didnt like Ikea ones because the tray doesn't detach (at least not eaaily) and the plastic doesn't clesn as nicely.

Do not get anything with cushions or padding. It just gets rank and stained (spag bol, tomato soup etc).

I hated the IKEA one too, it took up so much room and I kept falling over the bloody thing. We bought a Stokke lookalike from Facebay and it has served us well, it meant our little ones are truly up at the table which suited us much better.

Thanks for the recommendations all. Looks like the ikea one might be a safe bet :)

I did really like the Tripp Trapp for DS, who was mostly a BLW baby, because he wouldn’t accept being spoon fed the purees I lovingly made him but insisted on doing it all himself. We didn’t have the tray, just a suction plate on the dining table. I don’t know that I’m on board with the longevity claims though beverage it’s a bloody uncomfortable chair and at 18MOs DS can sit fine on our normal dining chairs so I’m getting rid and passing it on to my best friend who is pregnant.

GoAround · 21/07/2022 17:58

On the ikea one, my mum has it, because no point in an expensive one for the grandkids and we all trip over the stupid sticky out legs. Maybe you get used to it if it’s out all the time though.

CTR1000 · 21/07/2022 20:02

Ikea antilop all the way. I had 2 more expensive ones that I hated before I decided to do what I should have done in the first place and go to ikea. Also bought a foot rest online.

If I had money to burn I’d potentially get a Stokke Tripp Trapp but they’re silly expensive and where I live none available second hand.

Hdocheub820 · 30/07/2022 07:18

We lived the IKEA one for first starting out. Also recommend you buy the cushion insert and a foot rest (my husband made one out of a piece of wood). Footrests are important if you look it up the reasoning into it so I'd get one if you can.
If money was no object then I'd get a Tripp trapp but sadly it is 😆 we do have a Hauck now though she's bigger which is basically the same and a lot cheaper.

BertieBotts · 30/07/2022 07:21

I had Fisher Price Healthy Care Booster, strapped to a dining chair with DS1 and Antilop with DS2 and 3. The lack of footrest didn't seem to be a problem and although we got the harness, it is still in the packaging and has never been unwrapped.

I actually preferred the Fisher Price chair. I felt it fit DS1 better at 4-5 months, better support. Like I said I didn't notice the lack of footrest, but this essentially has one because of the chair it's on.

BertieBotts · 30/07/2022 07:24

Looks like the old Fisher Price one we had is out of production now and really expensive. A shame as it was so good and I don't know if the modern ones are the same. Maybe worth a look second hand?

BertieBotts · 30/07/2022 07:27

I used a folded towel or blanket in the Antilop when my babies were smaller. We got a cushion for it but it was in the wash so much a blanket made more sense!

A footrest provides a safer eating environment. Solid Starts has a good article explaining this.

zeromango · 30/07/2022 23:58

Sorry but yet another vote for the IKEA antilop Grin I've bought some lovely covers, insert and a footrest for mine to make it a bit prettier, and more supportive. My son is very happy in it and cleaning it is an absolute doddle. The chair itself is so cheap (£12.)

TrippTrapp is brilliant.
