that my lo has a too messy face when eating

thought was being nice by sending a recent photo of him eating first solids

i have been clueless about so many things but the one thing i thought i knew was that babies when first weaning make a huge mess

my little one just simply loves to grab spoon and smear food all over face and bib etc

so am pretty angry and down now as as usual been told am a useless mum

apparently i made no mess and ate everything from spoon into mouth nothing coming out!!

I sympathise bumbly. We are doing BLW (very messy) and was trying to tell my skeptical mum how nice it was that she was feeding herself and she said "yes well she'll have to learn table manners".

She's 6 months

No advice though I am afraid, just sympathy I am continually floored by my mother's comments and rose tinted view of motherhood (e.g. "It just shouldn't be that difficult " When she rang up and caught me crying when DD was 3 weeks old)

Huge sympathy from me, too. My mum is always on about when my daughter will get the hang of plates and cutlery (she thinks plates are for turning upside down and cutlery for poking herself in the eye). I just try to ignore it. I mean, she'll get the hang of it by the time she goes to school, I expect, and that's all that matters. So what if she wants to eat all her meals with her fingers off the table? She's only 16 months old.

jabuti · 13/01/2008 20:31

my DD is 6 months old and she already lay her napkin nicely on her lap before her meals. i wouldnt wait too long to teach your baby some table manners, you never know.

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 13/01/2008 21:29

Ah but jabuti, does she use the correct knife and fork?

jabuti · 13/01/2008 21:32

i must confess she is still mastering the fish knife. her father only developed this skill at 8 months, so we are hoping its just a matter of time

God what a thing to say to a new mum! DD is 18months, she was a messy eater from the moment she started eating solids, much prefers to do it herself and is never, ever, ever clean, (except for some reason when she goes to nursery).

We spent ages trying to keep her clen, and just realised, why bother? She enjoys it, soon enough she will not be allowed to spill food down her top or get it in her hair, or have to be bathed before she can go out again, soon enough she will be expected to eat with manners and without mess. For now, she is a baby/toddler, let he enjoy it.

Carry on as you are and dont think for a moment a messy baby means you are a useless mother....

Bumbly I feel your pain!

My parents are usually OK but over Christmas I had to endure a blow by blow spoonfeeding tutorial from my dad of all people. 'Don't let her grab the spoon, you've got to do it faster etc etc'. He chose to ignore my suggestion that he take over as he's clearly such an expert.

To add to that I had my grandma tutting and hovering with the babywipes.

Their disapproval plus her milk allergy and poor weight gain was sadly the end of my BLW- it was kind of the last straw for my confidence in my decision. Hopefully as our babies get older we will just get more confidence to stand up for our way of doing things as I'm sure there are plenty more disagreements ahead.

mama - i completely empathise!!!!!!!!
