Mini sandwich fillings, please?

While I suspect you BLW enthusiasts are probably a secret religious cult, given the threads on them, I have to admit that my baby loves having something to hold and chomp, so I'm joining you, dammit! She loves a hunk of tough bread, so I think the time has come to try her out with mini sandwiches, just because they sound cute, and I'm tired of giving her the Karmel stew-purees I've spent a whole day making for both lunch AND supper.

But I can't think of mini sandwich fillings beyond cream cheese or mushy avocado. It may be that she's a little young anyway - she's 9 months. Is cream cheese about all I can get away with right now? What might I be able to move onto soon?

Marmite?

I tried a Nigella suggestion once where you mix a bit of marmite and butter together to make a creamy spread. Less strong tasting.

Hm, Marmite? As a Marmite hater it would never have occurred to me to buy the stuff. I wonder what babies think of it. Hummous is a champion idea! She loves garlicky tasting things anyway. I usually give her a whole banana to hold, but I like the idea of a banana sarnie too. I am avoiding peanuts, and have never heard of cashew butter. I need to look at some fancier shops, I think! Thanks for the suggestions!

grated cheese, ham chopped into strips, philadelphia, high fruit jam and combinations of the above (e.g. grated cheese and ham, philly and jam, etc)

My mum is an advocate of hard boiled egg yolk mashed with butter - "in my day it was very important to give them lots of iron"

Or just well mashed hard boiled egg with mayo/creme fraiche or my baby is a fan of sour cream and chive dip to loosen things up a bit.

tuna mayo, especially good if you grate some carrot and cucumber into it. (and a bit of red onion, if your baby likes onion. that's the version i have, certainly).

oh, also if you grate some carrot finely and mix it with cheese and a spot of cumin and spring onions, then bung it in a half-pitta and toast it, it's actually rather delicious and really something for them to chew at.

I get cashew nut butter from Tescos! Also almond, and hazelnut. My mum used to give us 'fairy' sandwiches - with 100s and 1000s - but I think they're illegal now... [sigh]

Okay, well hummous worked A TREAT! I just had that in the fridge today. So a big thank you for the hummous. I'm into the funny-nut-butters idea, but am still afraid of the Marmite. I'm circling it.

macneil, with that last 'recipe' of mine, by toast it i just mean fling it in the toaster by the way. although obviously not upside-down or the cheese will all fall out.

um... my DD (10.5mths) likes garlic sausage sandwiches best - the stronger the better. Failing that avacado (but don't bother with the bread), tuna and sweetcorn or cream cheese.

Bah - the rest of you are no fun. OK- mashed avocado with chopped chicken and some basil if we're feeling very fancy; also avocado and philly mixed is a good standby. The Nome adores salmon sandwiches - tinned skinless and boneless salmon, mashed up on buttered bread. Her mother adds cucumber for form's sake, which she removes.

DS can't have egg so we use greek yoghurt, his fave is tuna yoghurt and avocado on a toasted mini pitta.

He ate half of my roast beef and mustard sarnie the other day - it is quite random what they like.

Oh and if you blend hard cheese such as cheddar and onion together it is great in sarnies or on jacket spuds.

Toasted my first mini pittas today and realised I had let them fall too far into the toaster. I had to fish them out with chopsticks. They were cheese, because I'm not very ambitious, and she refused to eat them for some unknown reason. Even when I smeared the outside with hummous. I have to conclude it was a whim of the moment rather than a failure, she's been a bit odd all day. I loved the hand sized portions.

oh mini pittas are a pita, as it were. the big ones are cheaper and you can cut them in half to make two little 'cups' iykim? plus when you get them out of the toaster you can do so with just the cheese-scalded tips of your fingers.

then leave to cool, chop into fingers and hand over.
