I’m starting to think about weaning my DD in the next month or so, just starting to do a bit of reading up to see what kind of things to give her and how to get going! Not really sure where to start so any help would be appreciated

Whatever we were having so dd had a roast dinner minus the gravy and DS I can't remember but he did eat fruit salad afterwards.

IntoValhalla · 03/04/2019 07:31

DC1 took the initiative herself to choose baby led weaning, and robbed a piece of meat off her dad’s plate in a restaurant at just past 6 months and had a good old chomp Grin
DC2, we did BLW again, but I gave him semi-frozen sticks of watermelon as he was teething. He’s 2.5yo now and watermelon is still his favourite fruit.

As of 6 months, pretty much anything goes, except for whole nuts (chopped and nut butters etc are fine) and no honey until 1yo. Once our DCs has got used to actually picking up food and putting it in their mouths, they just joined in with family meals - we just reduced salt content of everything.

Justdontknow5 · 03/04/2019 07:32

How old is your DD?
I started weaning my son at 6 months and gave him everything, mainly vegetables at the beginning. He now at nearly 8 months eats all sorts with a variety of veg, fruits, meats and carbs and he has water with every meal.
Are you wanting to do BLW or puree?
I do both so say I will feed him weetabix for breakfast but then he'll have fnger food for lunch.

stucknoue · 03/04/2019 07:34

Dd started grabbing food about 16 weeks but first food I gave her deliberately was banana followed by baby rice. She mostly had our dinner mashed and shredded

Elderflower14 · 03/04/2019 07:36

Pureed apple. My Dad had an orchard at his farm.
Ds2 is 22 now and still loves apple.... 💙

PlainJane74 · 03/04/2019 07:42

Banana
Puréed apple
Boiled mashed carrots/broccoli
Weetabix
Ready brek

wishywashy6 · 03/04/2019 07:43

Mine both just ate same as us from day 1
(All home cooked fresh/ low salt etc)
Didn't purée anything they just had bits they could grab and chomp on

ParisWilton · 03/04/2019 07:46

Pureed carrots then readybrek. But dd was close to 6 months when I started weaning so she very quickly moved onto lumpier textures and finger foods. I was nervous so started with a puree.

mclady · 03/04/2019 07:54

Pea purée. For the first month I stuck to single flavour veg purée and then started to mix it up, and lentils, etc... I made a stockpile of single flavour veg and fruit purées in ice cube trays and then decanted them into freezer to mix up as and when. Ella's Kitchen have some really great stuff you can send off for too.

Littlefroggy18 · 03/04/2019 07:59

She’s nearly 5 months justdontknow5 but I’m not planning on starting for a few weeks yet until she’s nearer 6 months

Bloody fucking carrot puree.

I swear it still wash out, decades later.
Grin

HeyMicky · 03/04/2019 08:06

I started both DDs on a Saturday morning - chunk of banana, some cereal flakes, toast finger, bit of scrambled egg. Which is what we were eating.

Same for lunch - corner of sandwich, maybe some tomato or avocado from our plate. Stick of cheddar.

Pasta for dinner.

They don't eat a lot at first - just give them some bits on their highchair tray to gum and smear about. Chop it up a bit with a fork if you want. Cut fruit and veg into bits big enough for them to hang onto. They'll get the hang of it - milk will keep them going in the meantime.

MissB83 · 03/04/2019 08:30

We cooked some fruits and vegetables and he had them very soft.

Sweet potato
Carrot
Broccoli (little pieces he fed himself)
Potato and cauliflower mixed together
A sort of tomato ratatouille
Soft cooked pasta with cheesy sauces

After a while I just gave him some of what I was having which was usually a stew or something from slow cooker.

AlphaJura · 03/04/2019 08:38

She grabbed a green bean off my plate and just started eating it but the first food I officially gave her was butternut squash purée. Then I gave her mostly boiled and mashed veg, soft fruit, porridge and then moved onto meat and fish and eggs. I didn't specially want to do baby led weaninh with this one (did more traditional with my older 2) but she doesn't really like being spoon fed and had quite a few teeth by 6 months so managed finger foods ok.

Littlefroggy18 · 03/04/2019 09:30

Thanks all! Just another question if I may? How did you know when to start reducing milk feeds? DD is formula fed so how will I know when to start reducing her formula feeds? Sorry if that’s a stupid question!!

OP posts:
mindutopia · 03/04/2019 09:45

With my first, it was melon slices, cucumber sticks, yorkshire pudding and roasted carrots and parsnips.

The second one, melon, cucumber sticks, pasta, toast fingers, a plum.

As for milk feeds, they reduce on their own. My first was ff and we dropped bottles or moved feeds later in the day in place of meals when she didn't take much at any given feed or was too full to eat her meal after. This didn't happen until about 9 months. My 2nd is bf, but it was much the same. I didn't offer unless he seemed hungry and it just happened naturally as he ate more solids.

irecitethegruffaloinmydreams · 03/04/2019 11:49

I gave her real food but adapted to be soft and easy to eat - e.g. ratatouille cooked until the veg was soft, lentil and spinach soup with olive oil and lemon juice, gazpacho - then she quickly decided that spoons were unacceptable for anything other than baby porridge and plain yoghurt, so we moved onto pancakes, pasta, omelette, savoury muffins, etc. Savoury flapjacks with oats, grated carrot and courgette, egg and cheese were also a big hit. And soft veg she could pick up like green beans, carrot sticks, etc.

MissB83 · 03/04/2019 13:24

Re follow up query, my son is nearly 14 months and still loves his boob. We have always done feeding on demand and I recommend this as it helps them through illness, transitions etc.

floribunda18 · 03/04/2019 14:09

I got this and followed the weaning instructions in there, carefully introducing new foods gradually basically. Some people say it's out of date as it advises four months rather than six, following the advice but starting at six months I don't think you can go wrong with it, personally. Both of my DDs were weaned like that, DD2 directly following the advice in the book, neither have any allergies, eat a wide variety of foods and have never had any problems with their weight.

LaPufalina · 03/04/2019 14:18

Joe Wicks's wean in 15 instagram is pretty good! My DD is almost 7 months and her first food was tenderstem broccoli spears, you find bits in her neck rolls though Smile

Babdoc · 03/04/2019 14:21

DD1 had some mashed potato off my plate at eight weeks. She fed her own peach yogurt on a spoon to DD2 when DD2 was nine weeks!
I then made lots of mixed veg purées and grated in some cheese while they cooled. Both DDs loved those.
We all weaned much earlier in those days. My DDs are nearly 30 years old now and very healthy. One is vegetarian, both are normal weights, neither of them have allergies.
As long as you give a good healthy mixed diet, encourage them to try lots of different flavours, avoid junk food or salt and beware giving lumpy food too young, you won’t go far wrong OP.

I avoided commercial baby food as much as possible, but if you’re travelling or short of time, the ready made jars etc might be ok.

LaPopie · 03/04/2019 14:23

DS1 - baby rice
DD - DS1 gave her toast at 3 months! Was advised to wean at 4 months - she managed to grab a piece of pizza express garlic bread before us noticing (!) - she hated baby rice and most purees so did blw so was chicken, veg, potatos etc
DS2 - DS1 (again!) gave him a McDonald's chip in the buggy without me noticing - he struggled really badly with constipation so we didn't give any purees on medical advice but also had to frequently hold off any solids so ate little and mainly bits of fruit/veg until just over a year

Wallsbangers · 03/04/2019 14:30

Some cucumber!

Took a few months before we dropped a bottle. Went from 5-2 over the course of 5 months.

tappitytaptap · 12/04/2019 20:53

Just started a few weeks ago with DS2 and he's having various veg, weetabix, porridge, yoghurt with mashed banana or fruit puree mixed in, toast fingers, cucumber and just appropriate bits of our dinner. He loved chilli and rice (mashed slightly with a fork then loaded the spoons for him) the other day!

tappitytaptap · 12/04/2019 20:55

Oh and I forgot his fave..mashed avocado, loves it!
