What does your baby eat for breakfast?

Hi mums....

Simply - what does your baby eat for breakfast?

I'm completely confused! I've read that babies need more iron enriched foods at 6 months....and then I've read that baby rice cereal, normally given at breakfast time...is to be avoided!

Any ideas? How did you ensure your little one had iron enriched foods...and can I give bubs rolled oats porridge for breakfast?

Thanks

Normal porridge made with formula, peanut butter on toast, yoghurt, fruit are our usuals hes also tried omlette, banana pancake and eggy bread but he's not keen!

Rikalaily · 16/02/2019 08:51

I use readybrek instead of porridge oats as it's fortified and add fruit to sweeten it. Also weetabix and fingers of toast etc

Ricekrispie22 · 16/02/2019 14:56

unsweetened porridge or cereal mixed with milk, topped with mashed pear
wholewheat biscuit cereal with milk and unsweetened stewed fruit.
toast fingers with mashed banana
toast fingers with a hard-boiled egg and slices of ripe peach
unsweetened stewed apple and breakfast cereal with plain, unsweetenedyoghurt

Iron-enriched cereals are not necessary if your LO is eating red meat, green leafy veg or other iron-rich foods such as lentils and pulses.
A baby must be over six months before they can have a wheat based cereal.

Ribbonsonabox · 16/02/2019 14:58

My lo is 7mnths and she has plain rolled oats made up with a little bit of formula milk and some pureed fruit or half a mashed up banana in it.

Reccy2018 · 16/02/2019 15:00

Fruits, yogurts, toast with peanut butter, avocado, weetabix, pancakes, scrambled eggs... not all together...

CottonSock · 16/02/2019 15:04

Readybrek and wheetabix, oat bars I made. Toast fingers

TheRhythmlessMan · 16/02/2019 19:10

Why is baby rice cereal to be avoided in the morning?

CottonSock · 16/02/2019 19:17

It has no nutritional value on its own, plus it's pretty yuk. My kids refused it

Thiswayorthatway · 16/02/2019 19:18

Make porridge with normal full fat milk, not formula, it's fine to cook with from 6 months.

jinglet · 16/02/2019 19:19

Should porridge be made with breast milk or cows milk? Asking as I've read heating breast milk causes it to lose its nutritional value.

jinglet · 16/02/2019 19:21

Thanks @Thiswayorthatway- cross post! So, a newly weaned baby who's only ever had breast milk can have porridge with normal full fat cows milk?

dementedpixie · 16/02/2019 19:23

From 6 months cows milk can be used in cereal and in foods/ cooking as long as the main drink remains breast/ formula milk

dementedpixie · 16/02/2019 19:24

Baby rice is quite bland and can contain arsenic. Porridge, ready brek, weetabix are all good from 6 months

Thiswayorthatway · 16/02/2019 19:24

Yes, it's fine to cook with cow's milk from 6 months, just don't give it as a drink yet (wait to 12 months). If baby is EBF and you have eaten dairy whilst feeding, and there's no sign of dairy allergy, use cow's milk in cooking.

pastabest · 16/02/2019 19:35

DC2 is 8 months and sometimes has cows milk as a drink if DC1 has done (she likes to copy). It's not supposed to be given instead of breastmilk or formula but there isnt actually a reason why they can't have it e.g instead of water before 12 months.

For breakfast she has soggy cornflakes (usually a spoonful or two from one if the adults bowls) which she eats with her fingers, or a banana, and usually I do some toast and jam fingers. Sometimes scrambled egg or a fried egg chopped into bits.

jinglet · 16/02/2019 19:38

Thank you all. That's reassuring. Also, are babies allowed to drink water- I've heard not to until they're at least a year old.

dementedpixie · 16/02/2019 19:40

Yes they can have water. I offered tap water in a cup alongside meals from 6 months

wishingyouluck · 16/02/2019 19:44

We had the Heinz baby porridge, you just add hot water, we then stirred in a cube of homemade apple purée to cool it down and get some extra fruit in. He still has it sometimes now at almost 13 months.

dementedpixie · 16/02/2019 19:44

Baby porridge is overpriced so you're as well using normal stuff

Reccy2018 · 16/02/2019 19:48

We offer water alongside meals, 8 month old does drink a bit but mostly let's it run out her mouth. I gave her a homemade chickpea burger and she needed some water with it as it was prettt dry. I drowned mine in mayo and ketchup 😂

ineedanewjobplease · 16/02/2019 19:57

Ready Brek or Weetabix here Smile

DD likes her breakfasts. I'm pretty useless at making sure she has a good range of foods for other meals though! I'm aiming to improve this.

Thiswayorthatway · 16/02/2019 20:46

Pastabest Cow's milk as a drink can be difficult to digest under 12 months.

meow1989 · 16/02/2019 20:51

Ds (nearly 8 months) has a mixture of:

  • Baby muesli with fruit cut up in it (prunes or dried apricots, raspberries, pear...)
  • weetabix with mashed banana and milk
  • scrambled egg with or without toast
  • pancakes made with an egg and a banana and blueberries
  • eggy bread and cinnamon

I use cows milk to make cereal and offer water to drink.

pastabest · 16/02/2019 21:02

Yes it can, which is why it's not advised to be given as a main drink.

But there is no difference between giving a child cows milk with cereal or a small amount in a beaker.

Faster · 16/02/2019 21:04

My sons had a bowl of shreddies every morning since 6 months old. Tried him once on eggy bread and he took a bite and swiped it off the table. Back to shreddies it was.
