Been a big gap between my youngest two and advice is so different now
My baby ds is breastfed and has been having some purée for 3 weeks now each morning
Had a reaction so had a few ‘days off’ and is fine now.
He’s having about 1 dessertspoon of food so not much ! Interested to find out what other babies this age have. He’s tried baby rice, baby porridge, carrot, sweet potato, pea, parsnip and banana

Following with interest. My BLW leaflet recommends strips of omelette and toast fingers, but DS can’t pick them up and chokes on them if I feed them to him. He won’t open his mouth for a spoon either.

So far I’ve managed to get him to eat porridge and plain yogurt with mashed fruit, chicken blended with veg such as squash or carrot, beef mince blended with tomato, and mashed veg such as broccoli. He sucks chunks of pear and watermelon if I hold them for him. I don’t think much goes in though, he seems to spit most of it back out.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/07/2018 08:37

If he can’t pick them up, he’s not ready for them yet Damson so he will choke if you feed him with them. I’d offer them in soldier size pieces if you’re having some, but leave them there on his tray if he’s struggling to pick them up.

What kind of reaction is he having [Hedge]?

Waitingonasmiley42 · 27/07/2018 08:39

Oatcakes, breadsticks, chunks of banana, porridge

Lauren83 · 27/07/2018 08:50

My DS is 6.5 and has been on purée since about 4.5 months, he has the past few weeks started eating finger foods and has had and enjoyed pittas and hummus, avocado, rice cakes, sticks of fruit, toast, pancakes and omlette

Hedgehog80 · 27/07/2018 10:32

Anything with cows milk in he projectile vomits then his reflux flares up so we are avoiding it totally now. One of my other dc has multiple allergies so it’s in our family. He had to have a few days just back to bf to really settle him after the milk but is a lot better now it’s out of his system

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/07/2018 11:55

Are you DF then too Hedge?

Hedgehog80 · 27/07/2018 14:23

Yes and it’s difficult ! Hopefully he will grow out of it sooner than ds1 did (age 10😳)

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/07/2018 15:08

You’ll have stopped BFing by then though Hedge? Smile

sureitsgrand · 27/07/2018 15:18

Following with interest as my 6mo doesn't appear too interested in his spoon feeds. He has grabbed a piece of bagel off his brother which made me think I should try blw but I'm a bit nervous! He gags on porridge.

Need to start properly. It was much easier on first when I had plenty of time to puree etc!

Hedgehog80 · 27/07/2018 15:53

Haha ! Yes ! Just a nightmare though as milk seemed to be in so many things. At least now with veganism being so trendy things might be easier as so much more choice for dairy free !
Ds has really liked apple purée and coconut yogurt the last two mornings. Took me a while to find a purée with no lemon juice in but aside from that it seems like a favourite of his

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/07/2018 16:00

Sure if he can eat bagel he can manage most finger foods. You don’t have to do BLW Weaning if you’re not happy with it but it’s pretty normal to give 6 month olds finger foods, no matter how you wean Smile

Hedge. I’m DF and yes, the current trend for veganism has helped. Still get offered fruit salad a lot though as dessert...Hmm

katmarie · 27/07/2018 16:08

Mine eats pretty much anything we give him, even stuff he's not supposed to eat like the post mans missed delivery card!

He seems to love home made rice pudding, yogurt, porridge, banana, oatmeal cookies and apple chunks, he seems to like toast, although he wasn't a fan at first. He's also tried asparagus, chicken and steak which he loooved (he swiped it off a plate the cheeky monkey). I'm using the baby led feeding cookbook which has loads of ideas for baby friendly versions of regular food.

CitySnicker · 27/07/2018 23:29

Presume you’re talking about ‘cooked’ cows milk as raw milk is for 12 months + only?

L0UISA · 27/07/2018 23:37

My kids also have multiple allergies so I avoided high risk foods like bread, biscuits, pasta, nuts, tomatoes, fish, eggs.

They mostly had fruit, veg, yoghurt, rice and cheese at first .

Hedgehog80 · 28/07/2018 08:10

He reacted to formula (in porridge)
Cows milk is fine though from 6 months ? As in cows milk in cereal or cooking , yogurt etc I thought it was just you shouldnt give it as a main drink before 12 m? Given his reaction I don’t think he will be having it for a while anyway !

OP posts:
L0UISA · 28/07/2018 08:18

This might be a silly question . But are you sure it was the formula and not the wheat or the oats ?

Hedgehog80 · 28/07/2018 11:04

Yes as he has had the porridge numerous times and been fine if it’s mixed with breast milk. It was oats did not contain any wheat he just cant seem to keep cows milk down at all it’s instant and projectile vomiting

OP posts:
Hedgehog80 · 28/07/2018 11:05

I was using the formula to make my life easier as thought at least then no expressing ! Didn’t quite work out

OP posts:
CitySnicker · 28/07/2018 15:42

I thought no ‘raw’ cows milk before 12 months. Yoghurt and cheese are fine.

I’ve just googled, however, and it says a little is fine. Maybe his stomach isn’t quite ready for it at all yet though. Sure my health visitor said none before 12 months due to lactose strands being indigestible..or something like that.

Hedgehog80 · 28/07/2018 18:14

He’s def not ready ! Never seen so much sick 🤢 and I only used 1oz inporridge yet he then turned it into about 14oz it seemed !! It was everywhere

OP posts:
L0UISA · 28/07/2018 18:47

Poor you, it’s not fun . At least you know what it was and can avoid it.

CitySnicker · 28/07/2018 18:57

Second that. At least you know. Hope things improve.
I know some children take years to get used to all milk based products.
Google ‘milk ladder’ for suggested order to introduce foods if the problem persists when he’s older ( but of course see a doc too).

Alex3101 · 28/07/2018 18:59

Our DS 6 months old has had banana, nectarine, peach, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots to eat in his hands. He can very efficiently strip all the flesh from a nectarine or peach.
He's had various Ella and Piccolo pouches which he finishes off no problem.
He's also eaten, puréed black bean chilli, potato curry, Thai soup with Tofu which he loved and various other things we eat.
He had some salmon today along with some avocado, he's just had pasta and cheese for dinner.
He has something of whatever we are all eating or whatever his brother is having.

catsofa · 28/07/2018 19:13

We fed mine lots of apple (cooked and mushed a bit) because it made his poo smell nicer, and sweetcorn (uncooked straight out of a tin, the unsalted type) because it's easy to spot in a nappy so we could tell he'd actually swallowed some. Seem to remember you pretty much get out what you put into a v small baby, so might as well make him smell fruity :)

bluechameleon · 28/07/2018 19:25

We started today. At lunchtime he had some cucumber and red pepper strips. For dinner he had some cooked carrot and courgette sticks, broccoli and pasta. Obviously didn't really eat any but had a good go at putting it in his mouth.
