What is a 6 month old NOT allowed to eat??

I know they can't have honey until 1 year old - is there anything else I'm not allowed to give DD when I start weaning her??

Also - I'm going to go for the lumpy & help yourself approach straight away - any problems with doing this as far as you know?? I am determined to allow her to explore tastes and textures as quickly as possible.

you need to google baby led weaning and go on babyledweaning.com

MrsBadger · 20/05/2007 22:00

er
chokey things like nuts
whole grapes / cherry tomatoes (halve them first)
shellfish

oooh now I've been on to baby led weaning.xom but for some reason it's on 'go very slow indeed'. I will persist!

Good point about the salt - as a general principle - do babies like pure flavours or are they absolutely fine with mixtures of strong ish flavours (e.g. olives + rice + sun dried tomatoe etc)

I mean tomato...

MrsBadger · 20/05/2007 22:09

depends on the baby
offer and if they don't like it they'll reject it
like us they love sweet things - fruit, carrot etc

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 20/05/2007 22:42

what's the story with shellfish MrsBadger - is it to do with allergies etc?

Twinklemegan · 20/05/2007 22:43

I wouldn't give egg for another couple of months at least, and then start with hard boiled egg yolk.

colditz · 20/05/2007 22:45

For first tastes I would offer food that isn't too shocking, but ds2, (13 months) put away a massive plate of turkey tikka masala the other day, so it doesn't always hold that that's all they will eat.

SlightlyMadSquare · 20/05/2007 22:49

Don't you have to wait until a year for kiwi's (or am I imagining that one???)

colditz · 20/05/2007 22:55

Kiwi and strawberry apparently very allergenic - I personally am allergic to kiwi, as is someone else I know, and I know several people allergic to strawberries.

onlygirlinthehouse · 20/05/2007 23:08

shellfish and nuts defo not. otherwise try baby friendly versions of what you eat. Missing out the salt and spices obviously. My mil used to complain that my babies always smelt of garlic which I took as a compliment. Any fruit and vegetable seemed to go down well in my house especially kiwi which I thought was horrible but they all seemed to like as babies (and still do)

onlygirlinthehouse · 20/05/2007 23:11

I think the reason for no shellfish is because of food poisoning. Rare but more likely with shellfish and too much of a risk with tiny babies.

It can be introduced after one though and my 11 yr olds favorite meal now is thai squid.

magnolia1 · 20/05/2007 23:14

Oh Shit! Ds1 had Kiwi today he is 6 months. He is fine though Spat most of it out

Bloody hell you would think with 5 kids I would know all the foods to avoid

SlightlyMadSquare · 20/05/2007 23:17

No - shellish is definately a potential allergen

SlightlyMadSquare · 20/05/2007 23:19

But kiwi is such a strange one that you wouln't think about.

I though celery was an allergen too but I think some baby foods contain it so I may be wrong there

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 21/05/2007 08:07

I wouldn't have thought of kiwis or strawbs either - thank goodness I asked!

amidaiwish · 21/05/2007 08:38

i wouldn't give eggs either
mine has an egg allergy and she wouldn't have it if i'd waited til later.

alex8 · 21/05/2007 17:24

shellfish at 6 months is fine according to the fsa. I have no idea why people think different as its been this way for over 3 years.

Tortington · 21/05/2007 17:28

marsbars
