It's not rocket science - "it may cause harm to wean early, it does no harm to leave it till 6m" - WHY do people still want to shovel baby rice in at 12 weeks (or earlier)?

I have come up with some ideas as to why people wean early:

they have competitive baby syndrome and are annoyed someone else's baby rolled first, so they want to get theirs onto steak and chips via baby rice and one fruit or veg a week for months

Well, an idea. Any more?

Got to go - my 14mo who's slept through twice since birth has just woken up.

I'm not getting into sleep deprivation and knackered and terrible things happening due to lack of sleep - been there, got the skeggy t-shirt.

ah, only 12 more blissful days of giving a stuff for me then

HC, you'd beat me hands-down I think....although tough call between you and Hunker. And HuniBuni too apparently.

nallyschocolateorange · 07/04/2007 23:43

vvv - love your pics

HunieBuniesBack · 07/04/2007 23:44

AitchTwoOh! I had a tough time, made more difficult because I wanted to be the perfect mum.

Babies have been around a long time before this prouncement re:6 months exclusive milk diet. Don't think I could cope with all the rules and regs surrounding bringing up babies now.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/04/2007 23:46

Its not hard to just do nuthin, imvho.

Nally - thank you

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2007 23:46

my friend can't work because of her terrible, terrible crohns so she volunteers to visit newly diagnosed people if they have questions, and is now seeing more and more children with bags.
she's on a feed system, liquids every morning, the longest living person in the world on this type of feed. she is The Single Most Amazing Person i have ever met. She told me she'd throttle me if i weaned dd before 6 months, just not a risk worth taking imo.

Frascati · 07/04/2007 23:47

southeastra ~ I agree totally.

Mine are both over 5 and to be honest all the baby stuff is so irrelevant.

I was fed rice in a bottle at 10 weeks and do not have any probs! My mum also used to nip a bit of whisky in to get me to sleep...

JodieG1 · 07/04/2007 23:48

VVV agree and Aitch Don't know why anyone risks it

harpsichordcarrier · 07/04/2007 23:49

look, here's frascati proving twinklemegan's point

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2007 23:49

probably best we don't get into a discussion about the utter normality of 'extended' bfing in most cultures, hunie, and the fact that weaning when the child starts picking up food just so obviously makes more sense.

zookeeper · 07/04/2007 23:50

What is the statistical risk of a child weaned before 6 months developing chrohns disease?

CAM · 07/04/2007 23:50

All the recent stuff I've read advises to start to wean between 4 and 6 months on the assumption that some types of food will be introduced at 4 months and some later.
At what stage between depending on the individual child. Sorry but there is no absolute 6 months magic marker, anymore than there is for any developmental stage.

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2007 23:50

dunno. not one worth taking if it's my baby, zookeeper.

NoBiggy · 07/04/2007 23:51

?

How recent?

harpsichordcarrier · 07/04/2007 23:51

zookeeper, how much of a risk would you be prepared to take?
why just not weait until after six months, and reduce the risk as far as possible?

Frascati · 07/04/2007 23:51

harpsi ~ ???
