Weaning

Find weaning advice from other Mumsnetters on our Weaning forum. Use our child development calendar for more information.

It's not rocket science - "it may cause harm to wean early, it does no harm to leave it till 6m" - WHY do people still want to shovel baby rice in at 12 weeks (or earlier)?

I have come up with some ideas as to why people wean early:

they have competitive baby syndrome and are annoyed someone else's baby rolled first, so they want to get theirs onto steak and chips via baby rice and one fruit or veg a week for months

Well, an idea. Any more?

12 month old babies with stomas? Thats tragic. Why has this happenened? And why now - I know I'm going to sound ignorant, but the advice on weaning ages seems to have changed quite drastically quite recently - what do we know now, that we didn't know then? Sorry to be dim, but as I say, I've clearly been out of the loop on this topic recently.

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2007 23:13

pmsl at our x-posted useless pleading...

JodieG1 · 07/04/2007 23:14

My ds1 was 18lb 14 at 16 weeks and he went to 6 months with no food, ds2 is 17 odd lb at 12 weeks and sure as hell doesn't need any food. Agree with Hunker though that it's future weaning not past.

harpsichordcarrier · 07/04/2007 23:15

we worry for the children.
surely that's bleeding obvious

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/04/2007 23:16

LOL Jodie...can tell its your 2nd baby....you dont know his weight to the exact ounce like you do your first

southeastastra · 07/04/2007 23:16

you seem so tense about it all the time. really once your child reaches 13 the worrying does really start

JodieG1 · 07/04/2007 23:16

Oh and that's on breastmilk only.

Frascati · 07/04/2007 23:17

southeastra ~ who is your post for?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/04/2007 23:18

SEA, its okay to be passionate about something, surely?

And if a thread can change a few opinions, whilst it is banded around....all the better, surely?

Nemo2007 · 07/04/2007 23:18

blimey jodie what was his birth weight?
keeping getting told DD2 is tiny but think she seems big but now Hv is mentiong failure to thrive again

hunkermunker · 07/04/2007 23:18

SEA, don't fret, I'm as chilled as a chilled person.

I just want people to do what's best for their babies, not follow their own competitive nutterism.

Lol vvv ds1 was my 2nd ;) I only remember as I dug his red book out for another thread and posted it Haven't had ds2 officially weighed, only on our scales with me holding him so that's why the vagueness hehe. Dd was my first and she was a tiny little thing, 4 weeks prem and took ages to gain weight, formula fed That's another thread but she was started on forumla and they made a fuss over seeing how much she was eating so we kept her on it If I the what I knew now or even a year later than I would have bf her too, didn't help that she was tube fed at first too. I digress.

Nemo2007 · 07/04/2007 23:20

hatrick think my hv is obsessed with weighing DD2 and comes out specifically..lol

HunieBuniesBack · 07/04/2007 23:20

In reply to OP, because 10 years ago the advice was different.

Have you had a baby that cried every 20mins - 30mins day and night due to hunger?

JodieG1 · 07/04/2007 23:20

Nemo - dd was 5lb 14 and a half, ds1 7lb 12 and a half and ds2 8lb 2 so not that huge really.

no not huge all smaller than my Ds was..lol DD2 was same as DD1 and 6lb14 but she is 13wks now and weighs just under 11lb which is why they are moaning.

AitchTwoOh · 07/04/2007 23:22

pmsl hunker... it seems that your OP is being widely misinterpreted. ROFL.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/04/2007 23:23

LOL Hatrick if i have number 3....DP not dead keen.....

9lb 3 at 8 weeks is lovely....DD was bigger than that at birth...id love to have a dinky baby that fitted newborn sized clothes.

nallyschocolateorange · 07/04/2007 23:23

Nemo - if she looks fine and is alert and healthy then don't worry, my dd weighed about 9 and a half pounds at 12 weeks and she was fine. She's now a 5 year old with loads of life and very active

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/04/2007 23:24

HuniBunie...would you do it now though? (which is the point of the thread)
