BLW - How can a 7 month old eat lumpy food????

Someone on another thread about blw, when I asked them if you have to mush up pasta, said that with blw a 7 month old can eat 'real food' without having to mush it up...

Does it not get stuck in their throats and make them vomit???

I am not sure exactly what it is all about, as I have never heard of blw before. I am on baby 3 and am still learning about these things!

dd2 (7 months) will watch my spoon go from plate to mouth to plate and will try and grab my food and, if i give it to her, will put it in her mouth. However, unless it is mushed up, she looks horrified and just throws it straight back up....

nally, i just answered on your other thread. have copied it across.

the thinking is that because they put the food in their mouths themselves (and initially the food goes in and falls straight back out again ) they are less likely to push past their gag reflex point and gag.
so no, they don't immediately know what to do but they learn very quickly. there are loads of pics on www.babyledweaning.com and also down on the right hand side there is a link to some clips of babies eating so you can see what you think. the main thing with blw i think is not to cut back on milk, just let the baby do that when they get the hang of eating.

LittleEasterLapin · 06/04/2007 21:23

No, they just chew it (if they have teeth) or gum it until bits break off... they spit it out if they have problems with it. My DS had pasta from 6 months (macaroni normally) and had no probs. He's almost one now, and tackles spaghetti with aplomb!

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 21:24

lapin, dd was eating noodles with her fork today... i was so proud.

LittleEasterLapin · 06/04/2007 21:25

Fork!!!!!

Good work, babybear!

My daughter ate proper food (as well as mush - I am not doing BLW but have nicked some of the recipes!) from around 6.5 months. She rarely gags - and if she does I am not bothered as gagging is what stops her from choking.
I know that sometimes babies do get something stuck and then cough until it comes up and sometimes they are sick as a result, but I don't think it is necessarily the case that this will happen.
What I have found with my daughter is that her gums are hard enough for her to eat food if she is determined enough. Meat can be hard work for her (as she is toothless) but she is fine with fruit and veg, bread etc. We tend to have one meal a day which is finger food. It makes less work for me as I can get on with the washing up or whatever and don't need to sit there spooning in the mush.

she will gum bits of toast or bread until it goes soggy and falls apart (and definitely eats some of it), and does the same with rusks. i let her try things because she obviously is interested. maybe i will see what she is like with macaroni..

Hi Nally - it was me that said that on another thread. Seems you have your answer now though.

Do take a look at Aitch's blog for lots more info.

nally, I am not an intentional BLW-er, dd just doesn't like spoons and wants to self-feed. Top tip here: fresh pasts twirls. They go in the freezer, cook from frozen in 4 mins and are softer than cooked dried pasta. Easy for her to grab, you can grate cheese on top (as well as tomato sauce or whatever you are having) and less messy than some of the things she has as she doesn't drop it so much

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 22:00

ooh, that's a good idea. we also like shells, but probably when she gets a bit older, as the bolognese or veg or whatever goes into them.

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 22:00

can i pinch it for the blog, lio.

fortyplus · 06/04/2007 22:02

ds1 was given garlic bread and houmos at a party when he was 8 months old - chewd it up and loved it.

ds2 still gagging on purees till he was nearly a year lod.

Bloomin' babies don't follow the books

nallyschocolateorange · 06/04/2007 22:03

good ideas..... maybe i should go and wake her up and get started now?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 22:04

maybe he had a sensitive gag reflex, forty? the thinking is that if they're more in charge that they 'train' their reflex. i hesitate to use the example, but that's how porn stars give deep throat, by practising...

lulumama · 06/04/2007 22:04

aitch- now that DD is 20 months, we are not really BLW anymore are we

LittleEasterLapin · 06/04/2007 22:05
Shock
LittleEasterLapin · 06/04/2007 22:05

lulumama, surely you are TLW now

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 22:05

nah. i was thinking about this today actually. might blog it.

lulumama · 06/04/2007 22:07

yes, tlw !

AitchTwoOh · 06/04/2007 22:08

tlw? translation please.

fortyplus · 06/04/2007 22:09

AitchTwoOh -

His throat was so narrow that it almost met in the middle. Fortunately he's now 11 and eats a very healthy diet - he started to get a lot better from about the age of 3 but was a total nightmare until then.
