27 week DS hates spoons & purees but loves ricecakes , whole banana, brocolli florets etc - BLW???

Help! Weaned DS last week at 26 weeks. Have tried all manner of fruit & veg - pureed but not slop but still pureed. Hates spoons, hasn't enjoyed anything at all, bar a tiny spoonful of pear. I start to panic & out of sheer frustration I gave him a ricecake (as DD was having one) which after initial gagging ate..& seem to really enjoy. Back to trying other purees, no sucess, much fuss, tears & tantrums. So today gave him bit of peach, just cut in half & he ate that! At lunch I gave him a banana to hold...he ate that too. Ths evening I gave him a large brocolli floret..which he managed just fine too.
I am confused as to whether this is BLW or whether he just likes a bit of finger food with maybe the purees to kick in at some point later? I'm still apprehensive about him choaking etc but he seems to be fine this far. I don't know whether I should encourage this or keep persisting with purees...DD is 2 & half & of course I Annabel Karmeled everything...it's just such a difference this time that I'm extremely unsure of where we should be heading.
Any constructive advice welcome!

ds did exactly the same(he's now 14 m)but to be honest i'd never heard of BLW until a few weeks ago on here so don't know much about it but i guess it's what we did in a way. The only puree he would eat was pear and he still doesn't like spoons or being fed to be more exact...too independent!
I'm sure soemone will be along soon who knows about BLW to help.
I'd just be pleased if i were you that he's eating such lovely healthy things. best of luck

chilledmama · 27/03/2007 18:20

if DS is eating and happy than keep doing the same...try the puree again in a week. I know why you like the puree, because you can see exactly how much they eat but finger food or BLW is really good(as long as I remember to have food in that my DS can eat).

exbury · 27/03/2007 18:22

sounds like your DS has chosen BLW to me. My DD (24 wks) has done the same to a lesser extent - she will eat purees, but what she nags and nags and nags for is "real food" - toast, bread sticks, chunks of veg, etc, etc - so I am making it up as I go along. I think it may be a 2nd child thing - they can see the older sibling eating and they want the same. BTW, I did Annabel Karmel for DS as well - seems it only works once

indiajane · 27/03/2007 18:28

We did BLW with a splash of heinz tomato soup and some bread this lunch time.

Good God, I'm still cleaning it off the walls

Coriander73 · 27/03/2007 18:37

Gosh, what a lovely response!

I guess that yes, how on earth do you know how much they are getting in terms of quantity / calories etc. I'm worried that he'll lose weight if it's just a banana here & a floret there....I suppose it's just hugely surprising given that with 1st child it was purees all the way....thought we'd be doing the same with DS. Also what do I tell them at nursery?

OP posts:
SoupDreggon · 27/03/2007 18:41

You dont cut down their milk.

DD was not a BLWable child - she really really wasn't interested one little bit. You'll be able to tell if your DS is doing OK, honest.

BizzyDint · 27/03/2007 18:42

there is a bit on the blog that soupy linked you to about nurseries (i wrote it )

Coriander73 · 28/03/2007 09:16

Do you think it's OK to give him pieces of roasted carrot & parsnip to hold for lunch? I'm loathe to mash it as it's not worked up until now. I'm just running out of ideas..can't keep giving him banana can I? I had a look at the website (thanks soup & dizzy)....very interesting...& such a difference......I do hope I'll be able to see if he's doing OK...can't say I'm 100% with the idea but he seems OK thus far & it is fun watching him....

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 28/03/2007 09:22

roasted veg sounds excellent
don't worry about how much he actually gets down - really he'd still be doing ok if he had just milk with no solids at all so anything that goes in is a bonus, as it were.

Marne · 28/03/2007 09:24

DD2 never liked sloppy food/purees, she was weaned early (BLW), She is 1 now and still hates anything on a spoon, she loves fruit (banana, apple, grapes etc..) also bread, roasted veg, rice cakes and bread sticks. Dd2 had a few teath by 6 months so it made things alot easier.

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 11:54

just keep doing what you're doing, coriander, and don't stress about the title BLW as it sounds like your baby is leading you firmly down the path of finger food anyway.
the good thing about the BLW info, though, (i write the blog btw) is that it helps you to relax about the amounts they are eating because as soupy says you don't take steps to cut down on milk. they will, when they're ready, and until they are they take the calories they need from what you offer.
someone on here gave me advice once to only start totting up the amount of food after a good few days, anyway, and i've found that useful when dd has a milk-only day. oops, gotta go, that's my boss calling...

Coriander73 · 28/03/2007 13:54

Thanks for the support!

However, two other questions if that's OK?:

Iron! I am aware that their natural supplies run out after 6 months. I know that green veg contain iron & obviously meet..but the thought of giving DS a piece of meet to chew on - without it being pureed does make me nervous - what am I do otherwise if he wont take it mushed down? Is there more chance he will choak on meet / chicken?

On your webpage aitch, I read that BLW is perfect for those babies that are breastfed but not quite so sure for those that are bottle fed. DS was BF until 5 months but now is exclusively bottle fed...does it really matter? Am I just being a little paranoid here?

Re lunchtime, he did eat a little roasted carrot...no choaking!

OP posts:
lulumama · 28/03/2007 13:55

iron does not suddenly run out at 6 months, it can start to diminish though

broccoli, meat , apricots and other iron rich foods will help

i bottle fed DD and no problem re BLW

BizzyDint · 28/03/2007 13:58

what lulu said. iron stores only START to deplete at 6 months. formula manufacturers would like you to think all of sudden you need follow on milk with added iron..you don't.

Coriander73 · 28/03/2007 14:34

thanks...Mumsnet is bloody brilliant

(assume apricots need some steaming?)

OP posts:
lulumama · 28/03/2007 14:41

you can soak / boil dried ones, ripe ones can jsut be cut into chunks.....

SoupDreggon · 28/03/2007 15:52

You can get ready to eat dried apricots too. However, these (and other stuff like raisins) can emerge the other end reconstituted so don't be freaked out by that.

AitchTwoOh · 28/03/2007 19:20

i bought those squishy unsulphured apricots and have never steamed them.

have a look at the bfing and ffing section of the blog, coriander, you will find that i wasn't so brilliant at the bfing myself and by the time dd was weaned she was exclusivey ff. it's fine. read the post on the blog, you'll see that gill rapley popped up to explain why she'd written that about the bfing.

Coriander73 · 29/03/2007 19:44

Today he had cauliflower at nursery although they told me that as he kept dropping it they mashed it a little & then gave it to him. The funny thing is that I was a little cross as he seems to be doing OK I'm quite happy to not mash anything & I wanted them to stick to that as well! He had some banana this afternoon & yoghurt which he loves.....tomorrow I wanted to try & give him some fresh salmon & maybe pasta the day after...are both OK for him to try at nearly 28 weeks? (also little sweetcorn?) All in all....feel pretty relaxed now...he seems content enough at the moment. The only stress in my house is me & the thought I have to go back to work on Monday ..(but that's on a whole different thread!)

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 21:11

both would be delicious, check for bones and fusilli are, imo, the best pasta for wee babies.

paulaplumpbottom · 29/03/2007 21:14

My DD loved strawberrys at that age give them a try. I tried to find the larger ones so she couldn't f
