Help! Weaned DS last week at 26 weeks. Have tried all manner of fruit & veg - pureed but not slop but still pureed. Hates spoons, hasn't enjoyed anything at all, bar a tiny spoonful of pear. I start to panic & out of sheer frustration I gave him a ricecake (as DD was having one) which after initial gagging ate..& seem to really enjoy. Back to trying other purees, no sucess, much fuss, tears & tantrums. So today gave him bit of peach, just cut in half & he ate that! At lunch I gave him a banana to hold...he ate that too. Ths evening I gave him a large brocolli floret..which he managed just fine too.
I am confused as to whether this is BLW or whether he just likes a bit of finger food with maybe the purees to kick in at some point later? I'm still apprehensive about him choaking etc but he seems to be fine this far. I don't know whether I should encourage this or keep persisting with purees...DD is 2 & half & of course I Annabel Karmeled everything...it's just such a difference this time that I'm extremely unsure of where we should be heading.
Any constructive advice welcome!

put it all in her mouth at once

unless you are worried about allergies, in which case no strawbs.

Oh yes of course

I'm so proud.. DS just had one babycorn, half a salmon fillet & a fresh apricot; just incredible watching him enjoy it & not gag!!!!!!!! I can't really believe this is happening....

OK...so at nursery he refuses to hold his food or have finger foods yet at home he doesn't want things mashed...am going a little stir crazy tbh. Do I persevere or combine or just mash? We were doing really well but I feel slightly dispondent...

maybe he just wants to join in at nursery and be the same as the other kids? presumably he likes the mash there? i don't see the problem, really, he'll get onto toddler food at nursery soon enough, meanwhile you keep doing what you're doing at home.

Thanks Aitch!

Today I tried him with a strip of roasted chicken breast! I don't know how much he ate as he seemed to suck more than bite off but when he opened his mouth he had pieces in there that he didn't seem to spit out. I guess that I'm worried he's not getting enough food, how can I be sure? Yes he's having 4 8oz bottles a day but at the last two weigh ins he's lost weight. Should I worry? Point is he will not take a spoon from me & seems to be getting on OK but it is unnerving still. Also, really am running out of ideas...he doesn't like toast! Has had papaya which was great & of course banana & apricots etc but I'm worrying about meat! I suppose what I seeking is assurance that I'm doing the right thing as DH does seem to think I'm a bit bonkers with BLW....

don't know what to say to you, really. dd never liked strips of chicken, but she loved big bits torn off the legs or thighs. weird child.

with regards to the weight thing, i can't help. i never had dd weighed as she was weighed a lot when she was tiny and she found it very upsetting. i have observed, however, that she has gained and lost over the months but i mostly concentrated on how healthy she seemed rather than her weight, iykwim?

the thing about BLW is that you shoudl give the baby as much milk as they want, so is she finishing those 4 8oz bottles? again, dd probably drank anywhere between 20 and 35 oz of milk a day depending on how she was feeling. we did throw away a lot of milk, though...

Coriander73 · 07/04/2007 22:24

He's drinking maybe 6oz at a time, then maybe he'll have 7...it is rare for him to finish 8oz now - I guess it's habit putting 8 in..! It's just such an almighty change from when we weaned dd just over two years ago that I fret that he's not getting enough calories etc but like you've mentioned before, he does seem really happy so I can only suppose he is doing OK....
