What age can LO's have toast?

Am BLW and have been giving it to DD from just over 6 months...she adores it.
It's not an everyday thing but have now been told by a friend I should not give a 6 month old toast.

Anyone know if this is correct and if so I couldn't of hurt DD could I? [mother panic/worry emoticon]

TIA

My dd had toast from 6 months. I have no idea why toast coud be bad for them at that age. They're old enough to have gluten and there's no more risk of choking than with many other foods. Is your friend BLW? I can only imagine she thinks babies that age shouldn't have anything other than purees. Keep giving it to her, and ignore your friend!!

hockeypuck · 25/03/2007 08:33

DS had toast at that age - just sucked it really with no teeth but it's fine after 6 months

MorocconOil · 25/03/2007 08:34

I gave all my 3 toast from 6 months and it didn't seem to do any harm. Is part of the concern about wheat intolerance, and keeping babies off wheat as long as possible? It could also be a choking hazard but then you wouldn't leave a 6 month old unsupervised while eating.

I wouldn't worry about it if she's been fine up to now.

thanks olihan

Not she is not BLW and yes she thinks I'm crazy...I thought that it was safe/ok but still thought I'd check the MN consensus

Thanks

my 6 month old has toast,it's one of the few things she can grasp herself. Most of it gets chucked on the floor, but some gets swallowed!

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 12:23

a Korean friend of mine once told me burnt toast is linked to cancer and ill health

in fact, he said, any food that is burnt in any way

so now i am paranoid about this and toast bread very lightly

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:25

that is true, nailpolish, it was on the BBC a while ago. although as someone who loves a bit of cremated bread (well-fired rolls, anyone?) i am already scunnered so continue to tuck in.

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 12:25

REALLY aitch

i always believed him because he has that far east wise look about him

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 12:26

actually he ws from hong kong

what are folks from hong kong called?

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:26

really really. i got the shock of my life. i hate pale toast, but it's all poor dd will ever know...

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:27

nobody say phooeys.

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 12:28

har har

lulumama · 28/03/2007 12:29

had heard that too, nailpolish , and over barbecued food, ie charred and carbonised ,is too..

it is the burnt bits that are allegedly carconeginic. BUT in very vast quantities i should think, the odd slice of burnt toast or a burnt sausage now and then won;t kill you!

Gibbon...toast is lovely !! and strips of pitta are nice too !

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 12:30

i loved giving dds toast when weaning - they just suck it anyway - you can spread purees on it to get some fruit and veg into them

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:34

actually lulu, i'm pretty sure that it's not an accumulation that's the problem. can't remember exactly why but i remember thinking 'oh shit' when i heard it on the news.

lulumama · 28/03/2007 12:47

really aitch i like burnt BBQ sausages

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 12:51

i like burnt evertything, except for steak, which i prefer still lowing gently if possible. we're screwed.

lulumama · 28/03/2007 13:00

yes to rare meat ! i was so pleased when i discovered blue steak, thought rare was it !

sister likes to say, wipe its bum and bring it to the table !

DS quite fond of a rare steak and chunky chips

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 28/03/2007 13:19

likewise DD, although it's strange to see her licking the blood as it drips down her podgy arms...

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 13:20

i need to start a thread on what do you call folks frim hong kong

its annooying me

lulumama · 28/03/2007 13:20

LOL!!! DD will not eat steak, which is fine by me, i eat her portion too !

GibbonInARibbon · 28/03/2007 23:14

eeewwwww at steak

strict veggie here although DD will be eating fish and meat like her dad

I heard that about burnt toast many years ago....DD likes is just nice and brown, she had pitta today lulu (spread with philli ) and loved it!

I usually give ds (9 months)half a slice of toast every morning but I read on one of the threads to be careful if you give bread products in morning and at lunchtime because of the salt content(sometimes he has asabwich for lunch or bread with his dinner). This salt issue worries me sick and I'm constantly fretting about it. Please reassure me that I'm not doing ds any harm
