Can we clear up once and for all whether you are 'allowed' to mention the possibility of spoon feeding on a BLW thread?

If the consensus is no, then I will happily bow out of any thread asking for advice on weaning, specifically BLW.

I always say that IMO it is fine to do both - ie a mixture of finger foods and spoon feeding.

Surely this cannot be in any way controversial?

led

Enid · 22/03/2007 12:24

yes

I agree with that

but I dont think that is what the ideology of BLW says

dejags · 22/03/2007 12:24

No Dizzy - you specifically said that if you used a spoon then you didn't get the idea of BLW. see below. I am not spoiling for an argument. It's just that I tried to understand the use of spoons in a previous thread and came away even more confused than when I started.

i care. i care when someone says they are doing a bit of blw and a bit of spoon feeding. that suggests to me they haven't quite 'got' the idea of blw. i have no problem with finger feeding alongside spoon feeding, like you say, that is very much the norm. nothing wrong with that. blw isn't just finger food, as has been explained 1 bizillion times before.

BizzyDint · 22/03/2007 12:25

no, read what you quoted again...'spoon FEEDING'

MrsPhilipGlenister · 22/03/2007 12:26

Sorry, but I don't understand that either. So is offering a spoon incompatible with BLW, or not?

AitchYouBerk · 22/03/2007 12:27

enid are you really confused or are you just having a laugh? i've got things to do and i've already been through this loads with you.

for the record, i see that there is a difference between BLW (capital letters, the concept etc) and being going along with what seems right for you and your baby... that is what i was agreeing with ledodgy about.

and rhuby, what book will you be hitting us with? annabel karmel?

Enid · 22/03/2007 12:27

yes that ios waht ledgogy is doing

sppon feeding and finger foods

I'm sure humans have always eaten runny foods

like yogurt bone stew animal fats gruel etc etc

dejags · 22/03/2007 12:28

ok Dizzy - semantics it is. I originally said I'd steer clear of the semantics surrouding this.

BizzyDint · 22/03/2007 12:28
TeeCee · 22/03/2007 12:28

BUT DOES IT MATTER??????????????

Enid · 22/03/2007 12:28

I am confused by the fact that sometimes you say to people 'oh yes, spoon feeding fi your baby wants it and finger foods, yes thats ok'

and sometimes you say 'ooh no, spoon feeding is BAD'

ledodgy said "I spoon feed and give finger food and consider myself a baby lead weaner as I am lead by my baby I don't use distraction if he doesn't want to eat he won't and I don't get stressed about it."

and you 'totally agreed'

and yet you get het up about spoon feeding at other times

OP posts:
TeeCee · 22/03/2007 12:29

It's all semantics in this thread!

dejags · 22/03/2007 12:29

It was your quote dizzy - not mine.

Aitch is my mate, so i am off now, as I don't want to cause any upset.

Enid · 22/03/2007 12:30

of course it doesnt teecee

but read the title! I am still genuinely curious to know whether I shoudl mention the possiblity of doing both on weaning threads WITHOUT getting sarky commnets

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 22/03/2007 12:30

No Bizzy I am not. Primates eat with their fingers - fact. This is not a reference to other cultures. If you want to twist it to some form of racism feel free.

BizzyDint · 22/03/2007 12:30

i'm bowing out now..meeting a friend for lunch.

TeeCee · 22/03/2007 12:32

I'd never be sarky with you Enid, I think your blardy loverlieeeeee!

And I love a food thread so I'm happy and I don't care what I do with DD2 is called as long as the food I magde her doesn't get thrown against a wall in dis gust.

AitchYouBerk · 22/03/2007 12:32

yes, enid, so i was agreeing with her that the concept can be different from the reality. she is being led by her baby and by what she wants to do, finds convenient, stress-free etc. but i wouldn't say that she is doing BLW and spoon feeding. she's doing finger foods and spoon feeding. she's perfectly happy with that, as are the loads of other people who do it, which is great. however, i have to go now so i'll leave you to it.
enjoy yourselves... or have a look for enid's old thread 'BLW -isn't this just something else for mothers to fail at?' (or something like that) where all of this was discussed at unbelievable length.

Enid · 22/03/2007 12:33

cod will go mad if she catches me involved in this

have ditched matalan, off to pick some broccoli from garden for dd3s lunch [smug]

OP posts:
lulumama · 22/03/2007 12:33

of course you can mention it, and no-one has ever ever said that spoon feeding is wrong and should not be done..but it goes against the fundamental part of BLW....

so yes, it is semantics, you cannot call it BLW and combine it with spoonfeeding, that is finger foods and puree! and calling it BLW then contradicts the ethos of BLW

call it mixed weaning or something , i dunno!

everyone is welcome to feed their baby however they choose, however is best and easiest for them

but it doesnt make it BLW !!!

and Aitch has said a gazillion times she thinks the name is wankola !!

TeeCee · 22/03/2007 12:34

What happens when your 15 months old uses a knife and fork though, what's it called then?

MrsPhilipGlenister · 22/03/2007 12:34

You've got me interested too, Enid, although only in a purely academic sense.

zippitippitoes · 22/03/2007 12:34

but looking at old threads is dull

and not quite the same thing as taking part in a discussion
