Anyone else weaning at 14 wks?

My DS has been taking milk only during daytime hours since week 9 - and recently he has been guzzling so much I think that he's going to explode with so much fluid.

So going on the advice of my mother, I tried a little mashed banana after his morning bottle and he absolutely shrieked with joy. After a few days of this, he is now opening his mouth to accept the spoon and swiping at the spoon with his fist (he's not getting it yet though).

No adverse effects poop wise, sleep wise, mood wise etc. Sleeping well through the nights, napping normally and not guzzling huge quantities of milk before bed.

Anyone else on a similar route?

But everyone is assuming that sleepfinder is unaware of the guidelines whereas I am assuming she is aware of them and is seeking others who are doing the same in order to swap experiences.BTW those cheerleaders' thighs are very like mine

DizzyBinterWonderland · 13/12/2006 21:55

she said- on advice of my mother. not on advice of my mother, WHO et el.

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 21:56

and i'm not trying to make it look like you are picking on her, i just wish you'd open your mind to the possibility that you may be wrong. no solids til 26 weeks, then steak and chips??? what about 25 weeks or 27? do we really have to do exactly what the DOH tells us?

Dottydotthehalls · 13/12/2006 21:56

We all like to find a bit of support from like minded others though when we're going through something new and therefore slightly scary, don't we? That's only natural - and why I posted in the first place. The fact that loads of others have said "don't do it" is fair enough, but she's not a lone voice in the wilderness!

DizzyBinterWonderland · 13/12/2006 21:57

no of course you don't have to. you don't have to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, but you should.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 13/12/2006 21:58

and fwiw, if you're doing BLW then yes you could do no solids til 26 weeks then steak and chips if you really wanted to, but lets not start on that one eh?!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/12/2006 21:59

merrie - you are bordering on sounding hysterical and ridiculous now......

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 13/12/2006 21:59

This is going in circles now.

Weaning early is A Bad Idea for lots of reasons.

If you want to do it, do it.

But don't be surprised if you don't get lots of posts in agreement with what you're doing from those who think that delaying weaning is better for babies.

Dottydotthehalls · 13/12/2006 22:01

During one particularly memorable screaming session with ds2, I was walking him up and down the pavement outside (he sounded quieter outside..!) and our 70+ year old neighbour came out and said he looked like he needed a pork chop to eat! I knew what she meant..!

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:06

we all know we should stick to the guidelines, and we shouldn't drink more than 2 units a week and we should exercise every day, but does everyone stick to that? i wish that i could have waited before weaning and i didn't do it thru laziness, it was because ds was not satisfied by milk alone. as i said, i researched and spoke to as many people as possible before making a decision. sleepy has made a decision and if she feels that 14 weeks is right for her baby then we should respect that

Did you give much baby rice to start with, MLM?

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:08

how am i sounding hysterical? you aren't budging and i don't see why i should

MrsBadger · 13/12/2006 22:09

(I'm not getting involved but am not sure the units of alcohol / doing exercise argument holds water because it's your own body you make those decisions about, not someone else's...)

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 13/12/2006 22:09

LOL MrsB - agree, totally.

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:10

yes ds had exclusivly baby rice once a day until he was 4 months, then vegetables pureed with milk. he didn't have any meat or dairy or gluten until 6,9 and 12 months respectively

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:12

my argument is, mrsb, we know what we should do but do we aways do whats right?

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 13/12/2006 22:13

And he settled having what, a teaspoon of baby rice, which contains fewer calories than milk?

Can you see why I might be sceptical?

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:15

no, he had 3 tablespoons of rice, on top of his milk, rising steadily. btw his milk intake also rose in line with his solids

DizzyBinterWonderland · 13/12/2006 22:15

so you gave him more milk and he settled

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:20

no, not on milk alone i tried giving him 8oz over alonger period, 9oz, and he wouldn't settle. it was when i tried (as a last resort) baby rice WITH milk that he started settling. dh is very happy with the way ds is turning out, he was reticent about weaning early, but (excuse the pun) the proof was in the pudding

merrylissiemas · 13/12/2006 22:23

and btw ds has stuck religiously to his growth centile.
