My DS has been taking milk only during daytime hours since week 9 - and recently he has been guzzling so much I think that he's going to explode with so much fluid.

So going on the advice of my mother, I tried a little mashed banana after his morning bottle and he absolutely shrieked with joy. After a few days of this, he is now opening his mouth to accept the spoon and swiping at the spoon with his fist (he's not getting it yet though).

No adverse effects poop wise, sleep wise, mood wise etc. Sleeping well through the nights, napping normally and not guzzling huge quantities of milk before bed.

Anyone else on a similar route?

walnutshell- HVs seem to frequesntly give flawed advice for one reason or another. what they should perhaps do is point mums in the direction of up to date information so they can make informed decisions. a lot of mums take HVs advice as gospel, when in fact it isn't.

Amazon are bloody useless aren't they?

You can order it through Assoc for Breastfeeding Mothers' website too.

Cheers.

The benefit of hindsight... I feel I have learned so much in the last 12 months or so.

I will check out that other source MD, ta x

DizzyBinterWonderland · 15/12/2006 19:41

oh fgs.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 15/12/2006 19:43

happybiggirl- mumsnet is a few thousand mums, not one view, that's the whole point. you get lots of opinions and experiences. unlike what you get with a many HVs.

Walnutshell · 15/12/2006 19:45

Yup, agree totally DBW. Now must away to my spicy potato and chickpea curry which of course is a great recipe for an 8 week old if anyone wants it.

DizzyBinterWonderland · 15/12/2006 19:46

"but what about all the people who were weaned at 12 weeks give or take and have no probs with ibs, intolerances etc"

But aren't these very things on the increase in the generations who were weaned earlier than the current guidelines?

DizzyBinterWonderland · 15/12/2006 19:53

happybiggirl- yes, people often come on here looking for reassurance that they are doing the right thing. that is exactly why it turns into a bunfight when they are told an opposing view which they don't like. particularly when that opposing view suggests that they are harming their baby. no one wants to hear that...ESPECIALLY when they are doing what they are doing based on what a 'health professional' has told them to do.

kiskidee · 16/12/2006 17:32

i missed a bunfight.

TinsellyRhino · 16/12/2006 17:35

Hey, I want nothing to do with the argument about weaning but can I have the spicy potato and chickpea curry, it sounds wondefully yummy to this heavily pregnant eating machine

TinsellyRhino · 16/12/2006 17:35

TinsellyRhino · 16/12/2006 17:46

Pretty pleeeeeease can I have the recipe, it sounds so scrummy

Walnutshell · 18/12/2006 18:43

TinsellyRhino, here it is with pleasure (sorry for the delay, Christmas shopping frenzy!)-:

Kumud Shah 'Quick After-Work Indian Vegetarian'
Spicy Potatoes & Chickpeas

Serves 4-6 (well, not with my ginormous portions, but there you go)

450g peeled spuds
1 green mango (if available) or 2tsps lemon juice
225g fresh, chopped tomatoes, or 4 tbsp tinned (that's more like it)
1 tbsp gram flour (or cornflour)
1x400g tin chickpeas
1 large sliced onion (pref Spanish)
3-4 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 Tbsp tomato puree
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp garam masala
2-3 green chillies, de-seeded (or not) and cut lengthways
1 tbsp Tamarind sauce (or sub a bit of sugar and lime juice)
2 tbsp desiccated coconut
a few fresh coriander leaves

  1. Boil spuds, drain, cut into bit-size. If using mango, skin & slice finely. Blend & sieve tomatoes if using fresh ones.

  2. Mix flour with 3 tbsp water to form smooth paste. Drain chickpeas.

  3. Fry onion in 1 tbsp oil, saute to golden, drain on kitchen paper & set aside.

  4. Add further 3 tbsp oil to pan, heat. Add cumin seeds, half mango slices, tomatoes & tomato puree. Bring to boil, add salt, chilli powder, garam masala.

  5. Cook 3-4 mins. Add gram flour paste, mix well. Add spuds & chickpeas + 4 tbsp water. Cover & cook for 10-15 mins.

  6. Add green chillies, rest of mango, tamarind, coconut, coriander. Garnish with the golden onion slices.

Oh, I could eat it again now. Happy cooking xxx

excuse me all you mrs-follow the nhs panphlets to the letter did you also keep your child in your room untill six months and can any of you honestly say you never once fell asleep with your baby? the guidlines are exactly what they say ONLY GUIDLINES! my health visitor actually advised me to wean my son at 14 weeks after id held out because she said if i didnt id have a very unhappy baby on my hands as he was starving! so give her a break she is doing what she thinks is best for her baby exactly like i am and in my book that makes her not only an excellent mother but also very brave to go with her own instincts!

MAMAZON · 03/03/2008 21:43

artichokes · 03/03/2008 21:44
