So can someone tell me what happens with going from formula to milk at 12 months?

how much should they be drinking? will this mean dd drinking loads of cow's milk as a substitute? how do you handle the transition and should i dump bottles at the same time or what?

gadm i feel like i've got this 12 month thing in my head, but part of me would just rather keep going as we have been and let dd phase out formula milk when she wants to... would that be wrong?

heyulp!

my public health nurse told me at ds's last check up that apparently it's been moved back to 18 months as babies weren't getting enough iron. so your supposed to bf or ff til then.

she might just be mad but if you really want to keep going you could use that as an excuse

Hi Aitch, I just added cows milk/reduced formula gradually for a week and allowed DS to drink it as he usually did.

I let DS had formula long after his first birthday because his eczema went a bit wild after I introduced it the first time. Second time was better, or we thought so, we didn't know then he was`allergic to milk

twickersmum · 20/11/2006 15:30

i have only just stopped formula before bed with my dd1 who is 2.9.
i think she is missing the vitamins tbh and am tempted to go back to it or give her a vitamin supplement.
i don't think there is any fixed time when you SHOULD switch from formula, just that from 12 (or 18?) months, they CAN have cow's milk. (and it is much cheaper so most people think you'd be mad not to)

i just swithched at 12mths no problem but then he doesn't drink much milk anyway and never has. He had dropped all his daytime bottles by 9/10 mths- just couldn't get him to take any more milk. Have just dropped his last bedtime bottle (at 20mths) cos he was only taking about 1-2oz. But he's a good eater and seems really healthy- I guess it just depends on the child.

JessaJam · 20/11/2006 15:41

Try dd on a cows milk feed in place of a formula one, see how she reacts to it...ds didn't seem to notice but some children react to the different taste so you may need to phase it it ( mix cows milk and formula, slowly increasing the ammount of cows milk...)
ds simply went from 150ml formula in the morning and about 250ml at night (before bed) plus cows milk in food/yoghurts/cereal etc to the same ammount but cowsmilk...at about 12 months
He has his milk in bottles still (is now 15 months) but water in a spouted cup...will tackle dumping bottles soon though..(gulp)

Thanks for asking this Aitch as I am in the same position (ds 1st bday was on Sat). I also use that 'Follow on' stuff (says from 10 mths), but not sure if it is worth it or just marketing blah.

Like Pruni we ran out a week before 1st bday, and I balked at the 6.99 price for another pack!
He actually seems to prefer cow's milk to the formula, but am not sure how quickly to introduce it. Also he has fairly bad eczema, but wasn't affected by change from bf to formula (at 11mths) so assuming this will be ok.

Enid · 20/11/2006 15:45

same as pruni here

moljam · 20/11/2006 15:59

ds is 11 months he has 1 x 8oz a day cows milk and 2 x 8oz aday formula.we are near end of tin and as hes been ok i probably wont buy more.i am very careful about his diet as he is veggie and im aware its easy for him to miss out on things such as iron.

TheHighwayCod · 20/11/2006 16:00

i did it at 6 months
a ll kdis alive and no allergies

madmarchhare · 20/11/2006 16:03

Ditched formula and bottles all in one go at about 11 months. DS not too happy for a couple of days but no real problem iirc.

Mercy · 20/11/2006 16:22

I used formula up until mine were about 15 months, maybe a couple of months longer. But only because there is a history of eczema/hayfever/asthma in my family. When I changed to cow's milk there was no problem in getting them to accept it iirc.

In fact both mine preferred their formula cold from the fridge from about 6 months, so at least I didn't have to deal with warming the milk.

AitchTwoOh · 20/11/2006 16:50

thanks all, that's interesting what you say about the 18months thing, pinktinsel. and then at the other end of the scale it's also pleasing to hear that cod's children are still alive, even if by sheer force of will on their part.
i'm not awfully conceerned about iron as she is good with red meat and green veggies. DD doesn't have any allergies, touch wood, but there is excema in the family. i suppose i'm just hemming and hawing about it because dd seems still to be on quite a lot of milk, 3-4 bottles a day. and for some colossally stupid reason i think this would be an awful lot of cow's milk to drink. which is crackers, as it's not exactly weasel milk she's been drinking all this time...

Aitch, I think around a pint of milk a day is still the recommendation for under 5s; obviously some of that could be in other forms not just as a drink in a bottle.

My ds is now 2.9 and still has at least a pint a day, yes in a bottle, but we are slowly cutting that back and trying to 'improve' his overall diet.

Also, so far neither of mine have shown any signs of allergy. Thank god.

sasa15 · 20/11/2006 17:10

nothing happened to my ds.
Digested ok, drinked ok...
no difference at all!!

Enid · 20/11/2006 17:12

cod! DID you? really? [awed emoticon]

TheHighwayCod · 20/11/2006 19:28

yes but remembr mum says i was eating steak and chips at 9 months

AitchTwoOh · 20/11/2006 19:36

COD!

I'm almost afraid to tell you this but it sounds to me like you were BLW-ed...

OP posts:
Mercy · 20/11/2006 19:50

Cod, if our mothers our roughly the same age it seems to be an expression they use. Mine has said it, in a jokey way, for years (the steak and chips thing that is)

It does pale after the first 20 years or so!

AitchTwoOh · 20/11/2006 19:52

my DD was happily eating steak and chips at 7 months. not kidding. what's not to like?

TheHighwayCod · 20/11/2006 19:52

ans i had it as gospel mmercy!

yes dsses alla on cows milk early (well ihtink fo ds1 the dvice had onyl changed about a eyar before)

Bozza · 20/11/2006 19:53

I just ditched it when we ran out running up to 12 months and onto full fat cows. Ditched bottles at 12 months.

PrincessPeaHead · 20/11/2006 19:53

I did it at 8 months. Straight switch. No change except she started saying "mmmmm" as she drank it and her milk consumption went up by about a third (with no commensurate drop in her VAST food intake - she is a TRENCHERMAN)

She still has it out of a bottle (almost 10 months) but she is getting pretty good with water out of a cup and as soon as she is very good with it the bottles will be thrown out. I'd say by 11 months I will be BOTTLE FREE AFTER 8.5 YEARS! (Can you tell I'm excited at the prospect??!)
