do your 6 month old eat the same meals as you? If so, what meals do you have?

ds is 6 months and ive pureed a little bit but everyone keeps saying that he should be able to eat the same meals as us now, albeit mashed or whatever. IS this ok to do?

And what meals do you all have together - i am looking for inspiration for relatively healthy meal ideas!

TIA X

yes it's fine.
try and choose things that you can add salt or whatever to AFTER you take his portion out.

hairymclary · 09/11/2006 22:26

my ds used to eat prety much anything. if there was anything unsuitable we'd just leave that out of his (ie anything high in salt etc)

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:27

Do you want to do the whole pureeing/mashing thing, or have you considered going down the blw route? There are lots of ideas we can give you if you want to do blw.

MandyBOO · 09/11/2006 22:27

so far i guess we can all have

  • stew
  • soup
  • roast

Anymore suggestions?

Yeah - BLW ideas would be great!

Traditionally English ones are quite easy for littlies, like carrot, potato and chicken, and pasta goes down very well with a bit of grated cheese

colditz · 09/11/2006 22:28

Get penne pasta, it's easier to hold.

littlepiggie · 09/11/2006 22:31

ds is 29 weeks and eats the same a us near enough, dont give him eggs, honey or nuts.

not found anything that has beaten him yet [even eats brown rice and risoto]
nothing gets mushed or blizzed.

MandyBOO · 09/11/2006 22:33

he's not sitting up yet and not in a high chair so how can he feed himself? I feed him in his bouncy chair atm

Just put it in his hand and let him get on with it.

colditz · 09/11/2006 22:35

Why, what's wrong with eggs? I* thought eggs were ok!

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:35

fusilli is easier still colditz!

Check out Aitch's blog for loads of ideas for blw here - you can see what she gave in the early days there.

I'd keep it really simple for the first couple of weeks or more (depending how well he takes to it), and just offer a couple of veg cut into chip shapes, or broccoli (tenderstem is good because it has a long 'handle' for holding onto).

Then it really is anything goes once he's got the idea of it - gnocchi, firm fish, braising steak, cucumber, tomatoes (I skin these), roasted peppers, soup with big chunks of bread, toast, beans - it really is whatever you're having!

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:36

Well cooked eggs are fine from 6 months unless you have an allergy!

littlepiggie · 09/11/2006 22:37

sit him on your knee, we started with him sat on my knee while i was eating a banana, in a boucy chair it could fall to the back of his mouth.
Be warned, you will never be able to eat again unles ds is, or he will want yours.

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:38

If he can't sit up yet then I'm not sure I'd actually start weaning! I presume he can support his head alright though, and maybe sit in a bumbo? To have finger foods he really should be in an upright position.

littlepiggie · 09/11/2006 22:39

eggs are a bad one for allergys, staying away for the time being.

Hattie05 · 09/11/2006 22:39

Isn't it easier to say what meals do you have that he couldn't eat?

Any type of meat, pots and veg can be given. Any type of home cooked pasta with sauce. Any casseroles and cook in the oven type stuff like shepherds pie, lasagne ...
I think the only times dd didn't eat what we were eating is when we got take away curry!
I don't add salt to cooking anyway so thats not a problem and so long as you make all sauces etc yourself your ds can have it.

MandyBOO · 09/11/2006 22:40

yeah, he can support his head perfectly but just not sitting up yet? Could i strap him into his highchair nonetheless or would that consitute a visit from Social Workers??!!??

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:40

No harm in being cautious if it makes you happy lp .

My dd is milk intolerant, but thankfully has had no problem at all with eggs.

littlepiggie · 09/11/2006 22:41

you could try padding round him. (is he 26 weeks yet?)

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/11/2006 22:42

Hmm - not sure Mandy - it's not a problem I've had to think about before, as DD was sitting at 4 months (I think!).

littlepiggie · 09/11/2006 22:43

my brother had an egg alergy, although seems ok now so reluctant to give him them to soon.

MandyBOO · 09/11/2006 22:43

yeah he's 28 weeks.

He's almost sitting up - just being a typically lazy bloke!

Ds was eating kumara and pear at this stage (and only kumara) and there was a limit to how much kumara and pear I wanted to eat.

By the time he was walking he was eating pretty much what we have (16 months). I think it's a gradual thing to work towards.
