the h/v says I should be watching his puddings so as he doens't get too fat - boy doesn't look overly fat - bit of chubbyness, but nothing i'm bothered about overly (esp as he'll prob run most of it off once hes walking) he's crawling well. a typical day for us is:

breakfast (heniz variety or readybrek (gonna try) have also given half slice of brown toast as well as he seemed to want a little more. (also 1 BF)
snack is normally about 2/3oz of formula- if I'm lucky it's 3. and either a rice cake thingy or bread stick.

lunch is the equivalent of those 7 month jars and a pudding - either a yoghurt or those fruit pot.

snack - per morning snack, evening tea same again but differnt pudding - if has a yog at lunch has fruit in the afternoon iycwim.

sometimes I give him one of those biscotti/cow and gate buscuits as a snack.

mainly i'm wondering what else I can give him as a snack and what other puddings I can do besides fresh fruit yoghurts and the fruit pots.

he normally has water with his lunch and tea.

I've got some of those suger snap peas, fine beans and baby corn thingys - wasn't sure if any of those are suitable yet or not as snacks I mean.

as I say not overly worried too much juct don't want him to keep going up and up iycwim. he's currently slightly above the 75th centile.

(ooh and bedtime is a BF) i've finally just about got him going thru as well so don't really want to mess with things too mcuh just after reassurance I guess.

milk wise he has 2 BF, and i'd say about 12 oz of formula max during the day.

Good grief, my ds was 21 by 6 months and there was no problem at all! Your HV is talking out of her badly informed bottom IMO. Your boy sounds great - don't change anything!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/10/2006 17:19

I dont think you need to change anything. Sounds fine to me. Your first paragraph said it all to me really. Once he starts crawling/walking......

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/10/2006 17:21

my DD was 21lb at 6 months too.

with my DS (second baby), stopped getting him weighed at around 6 months because it really didnt mean anything to me. He'd always gained weight healthily etc.

Your HV seems a bit over zealous...

Munz · 10/10/2006 17:50

thanks guys, sometime's it's just good for reassurance that he's ok - I mean he's healthy and alert. into everything he shouldn't be, crawlin about like a gooden - esp as there's a world called the hallway!

do u know if he can have the sugersnap peas and such as an alternative snack?

oh tell the hv to nob off. i'm sorry but they really do talk some crap don't they?

your ds sounds fab -keep doing what you're doing.

BIGlilBUBU · 10/10/2006 18:18

Wow my ds still doesnt eat that well and he's nearly 13months old. Hes doing really well. My hv told me my son was abit over weight last time I had him weighed, he's over the 91st centile. It sounds really big but he doesnt look any chubbier than any other baby his age. He is quite tall though. I must admit I was worried too, I think its only natural really.

alexsCURSEDMUMMY · 10/10/2006 18:20

my ds1 was constantly off the charts and i had all this crap about him being big. then some bright spark thought to measure him and sure enough he was off the chart for height too and was perfectly in proportion. now is a tall slim strong 6 y/o.

cece · 10/10/2006 18:21

Sounds normal to me.

DS was 21 lb at that age...

Emskilou · 10/10/2006 18:22

My ds (now 8.5 months) weighed the same as his big sister at the last weigh in and there is 14 months between them, ive just posted pics, neither looks fat nor skinny. Dont worry about it, you are doing a fab job!

Munz · 10/10/2006 19:01

kama - I did try him with a dairylea, but he was sick so didn't try it again.

alex - I didn't think aboutt he heigh thing, DH is 6'3 and skinny as a rake handle at 13 stone, i'm 5'2 and 11 stone (ok more 12) but big boned

joey's fitting his 6-9 baby grows well and don't think the 9-12s will be far off from the point of view of the length.

Toothyboy · 10/10/2006 19:28

Hi Munz - he sounds absolutely fine! If he's happily eating everything you're offering then what you're giving must be just right. And good on you for getting him sleeping through!

My ds2 is the same age as Joey (you prob remember me from the due in March 06!), he's only 15lb and only just into 3-6 months clothes! But he's fine the size he is - some babies are big, some babies are small! You sound like you're doing a great job!

bananaloaf · 10/10/2006 19:30

mumz ds2 has just turned 7 month and he is 20 pounds.

misdee · 10/10/2006 19:35

minz he sounds fine.

this is dd2 she weighed around 28lb in this picture. she was 9months old and off the charts. i was also told to watch what she eats, but her height tallied totally against her weight.

terll the HV to go jump.

btw link{http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/djmisdee/detail?.dir=e088scd&.dnm=af3escd.jpg&.src=ph\same child 3 years later} not an ounze of flab on her.

loomer · 10/10/2006 19:38

Just to reply to your query on snacks - he should be quite happy with fine beans and baby corn, steamed to the extent that you can squash them with a fairly strong squeeze in your fingers, but not so that they are really floppy and falling apart. If you leave them full length that'll mean he can grip one end and munch on the other. Brocolli is good for this too (has a natural 'handle' at the on-bushy end IYSWIM).

Munz · 10/10/2006 21:31

thanks loomer - althou I do feel a bit mean givin him veggies at tots when the other babies have busicuts so I think i'll stick with my rice cakes up there (he has the apple ones) and the veg at home.

it's good to hear we're not alone with it.

tb - literlally he started on the night he turned 7 months, not changed anyting really - gave him more solids when he was up more during the night, he started to crawl more so that helped I think.

mum recons it's fine and the H/V means not to give him a jam sandwish or such as a snack instead of the veg iycwim - ie not offer another meal type thing or choclate or the time (which I don't do)

does anyone know if dairylea is ok for babies of this age? (I'm cautious and one of those snobby ppl who reads the food lables! lol, don't care about my food just his as he's growing!)

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 10/10/2006 21:40

Hi Munz

Weight sounds fine to me. The only thing I'd look at is whether the yoghurts are ones that contain lots of sugar or not, but as you say that you read food labels I expect you've already checked that.

I'll second the response that those veggies are fine for him. On the broccoli front, tenderstem broccoli is fab if you can get it, as there's a huge handle for them to hold on to. Also asparagus spears, or you could give pieces of fresh fruit - banana, nice ripe pear, soft melon (eg galia).

Can't help on the dairylea question obviously as we can't give DD cheese at all.

Munz · 10/10/2006 21:49

is pear and melon ok? I did give him apple once only to be told it was a big no no - I do sit by him and hold the one end as well to ensure he doens't choke - it's my big hang up. (as i'm sure it is for most of us mums)

OP posts:
NastyNemo666 · 10/10/2006 21:51

munz if you think he is ok then I wouldnt worry..I was always told DS was overweight for his age etc then he hit one and didnt put any weight on so now am told he is underweight..stupid charts. Was always told DD was just under norm but if I took her now no doubt she would be over norm.

misdee · 10/10/2006 21:54

munz, dont put him o na diet please.

pear and melon is ok. dd3 was eating sliced apple around this age, i would hold it for her and she would nibble it.

Munz · 10/10/2006 21:57

oh no misdee beleive me I have no intention of doing thta, definatly not, i'd never put him on a diet - leasty not this side of him still growing, it's more for the variety as well iycwim. (his snacks are a bit limited as I guess we're both learnign still and i'm a little unsure as to what's the best to give him)

i'd sooner have hims a touch over weight than under so he has the spare to run off iycwim - he seems to be a v active little boy anywasy

OP posts:
Munz · 10/10/2006 21:58

lol@ the hold - yes I do that, however buggerlugs likes to suck it - and as my boobies can tell u he's got a bloody strong suck

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 10/10/2006 21:59

Who told you it was a no-no Munz, as I wouldn't listen to anything else they have to say!! Pretty much anything goes at this age, and it's just a question of whether they can manage to bite it or not. I think pear works better than apple as it is usually softer (depending on variety). DD has no teeth yet but manages to eat masses of finger food - in fact she doesn't often let me feed her with a spoon these days! I don't leave DD unattended with food, but I just put her food in front of her and she dives in and feeds herself (and throws lots of it on the floor!).
