Are you giving your toddler Vitamin D?

Just that really... my DS is a year and two weeks and on cows milk now. Having read that children should have vitamin D supplements up to the age of five, I bought an enormously expensive bottle of D-Drops. Is this really necessary? How many of you do it?

Yep - when I remember. Did it with his big brother too.

hollie84 · 20/08/2014 20:07

Yes, I think it is pretty sensible to be honest.

dodi1978 · 20/08/2014 20:10

Ok, happy to start doing it! The health visitor didn't even mention this at the one year weigh in, I just by chance found a note in the red book when flipping through it. D-Drops to be introduced from tomorrow!!!

I give my older three chewable vitamin d and calcium vitamins. I tried the liquid one and they hated it and refused to have it, to be fair when I tried it even the smell was awful and the taste even worse.

For this reason I give my toddler ds2 the follow on formula with his breakfast and before bed which gives him his rda vitamin d.

When he's old enough I'll give him the same as my older DCs. My HV recommended giving vitamin d to older children as well as its difficult to get enough from the sun in the uk due to sunscreen and lack of sun in general.

mausmaus · 20/08/2014 20:59

yes, in the winter months, from oct to april.
just the normal vit d from boots or the supermarket, not special kids stuff.

Andcake · 20/08/2014 21:21

Yes - I just get the free surestart ones from my gp - just sign for a little bottle out a few drops in his bottle. I thought you were free for everyone. HV in fairness didn't mention them until 1 year check so that's when I started them. They go in his morning milk!

ilovepowerhoop · 20/08/2014 21:25

its supposed to be Vitamins A,C and D that you supplement

onedogatoddlerandababy · 20/08/2014 21:31

Yep I do, vit d3 as that is the 'version' of vit d that is synthesised from sunshine (or so I understand from a previous thread about this) Boots have the d drops on their 3for 2 offer so get about 3 months supply for twenty quid.

Squeakyheart · 20/08/2014 21:38

The pharmacist at my local boots said you can't get get vit d drops in uk you have to give multi vits which I have tried but DD just spits it out! Are there plain d drops then?

ilovepowerhoop · 20/08/2014 21:43

Boots sell just vitamin D3 drops on their website

Andcake · 20/08/2014 22:02

The surestart ones are a, c & d just ask at your gp. It's silly to pay!

Roonerspism · 20/08/2014 22:05

Yes - only September to march though. Make sure it is D3.

Asda sell the drops at a very reasonable price

mausmaus · 21/08/2014 08:05

I give the normal tablets, they dissolve on a spoon of milk or yoghurt.

Squeakyheart · 22/08/2014 22:41

Thanks ilovepowerhoop won't be listening to her again fortunately the ones I have are cheaper or I would not be happy!

Yep, when I remember! More in the winter than in the summer. We're lucky our 2 yr old seems to actually like the taste of vitamin drops. Try to feed her calpol on the other hand and all hell breaks loose!

KernowKids · 26/08/2014 02:34

I give both dds chewable multivits daily.

Cavort · 26/08/2014 03:00

I give 13 month DD the Wellkid multivitamin as she refuses both formula and cow's milk. Luckily she really likes the taste of it.

FengMa · 26/08/2014 03:27

Yup, Sure Start for 8 mo to be sure on vit D (comfortable that he gets the rest from formula, breast and food) and Well Kid for my 2.5 yo (she generally eats well but as a faddy toddler can randomly refuse certain foods - belt and braces!)

I haven't started yet but health visitor said the drops are very cheap in asda

Victoria2002 · 28/08/2014 23:24

I get it free at my local children's centre no questions asked.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 28/08/2014 23:31

What are they for? Never given dd (2 1/2) vitamins and she seems fit as a fiddle@

RedNosedClone · 28/08/2014 23:52

In some countries small children are given a vitamin D injection which covers their needs for up to 6 months.
