DS 6 months today still undecided on how to start this BLW

Hiya all,
You'd think I would have looked into this a bit better, but I just feel totally confused now. Decided ages ago to go for BLW and have bought in loads of organic veg, pasta, rusks and cheese so got all the ingredients.. But where do I start?
People say he can eat more or less the same as what we eat!?
But I want to know if I should introduce one thing at the time or several things in one go???
Is he more likely to eat it if we eat something similar? Like we eat chicken stir fry and he has steamed veg? Perhaps a small bit of chicken?
Or we eat macaroni n cheese and offer him pasta shapes??
Please help!!!
We also have organic baby yogurts and bananas if you think that would be better to start with??
We don't have any great allergy concerns. DH has excma (? spelling) and I have hayfever. I'm BF and DS used to get a rash on his back and tummy, DR said it was food allergy, something I ate and I stopped eating chocolate (which I must admit I ate in excess ) the rash faded away...
Sorry about this long post. Hope you can help me.
Thanx

I was gonna try yogurt as fingerfood hunkermunker, but now not sure if i should with all the applejuice in my lovely yogs.. Anyway my ds not very coordinated yet, so prob be disastrous..

Food's not about them actually eating it in the first few months though IMO. It's about playing - that's how they learn.

Apple juice in yogs is fine IMO.

FrannyandZooey · 05/07/2006 07:35

I don't actually mind too much about the addition of sugar or fruit juice - it's how the end product tastes that I'm more concerned about. If it tastes (to me) sweet and cloying, then I avoid it. Those sweetened yogurts (either fruit juice or sugar) are really pretty sweet tasting - far more than a child needs IMO. I mix natural yogurt with fruit puree, or mix the sweetened ones half and half with plain yogurt.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 08:12

Not least because kids will very happily eat plain greek yogurt with nothing in it - it doesn't need any sugar for them.

I'm lazy, so often mix sweetened yog with plain, even for me.

CorrieDale · 05/07/2006 08:44

You can give yogurt as a finger food if you chop up the fruit into biggish pieces and use the yogurt just to coat them - the fruit acts as a makeshift spoon. We did use to give DS yogurt on a spoon, but he would snatch it from our hands. We were NEVER allowed to actually put the spoon into his mouth ourselves. His aim quickly got quite good (not sure how good it would have been if the spoon had been loaded with parsnip puree a la AK!)

hunkermunker · 05/07/2006 08:59

DS1 loves the YV natural yoghurt because it has a flower on the front of the pot

Although he also likes strawberry now - he wouldn't eat anything but plain till he was one and a halfish. And "apple" yoghurt which is peach - the picture does look quite like an apple, I suppose!

FrannyandZooey · 05/07/2006 13:03

I don't really see a huge point them having yogurt while they are weaning, anyway. I mean if you didn't give them the yogurt, they would just drink more breastmilk, right? And breastmilk is better for them than yogurt.

I guess you could extend this to all foods and never wean them at all

23balloons · 05/07/2006 13:40

I have never heard of BLW aren't you afraid they might choke going from breast milk to batons of food?

I suppose it depends on how many teeth they have too. Ds2 got his first tooth at 4 months and had 8 by 6 months he could have easily bitten off a huge piece of eg carrot but not been able to eat it properly.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 14:05

Well, you do have to watch for choking, but the theory is, if they put lumpy food in their mouths, they put it in the front of their mouth and can shift it to the back, themselves. But if you put lumpy food in, they might be expecting mush instead, suck it to the back of their throat, and then choke.

Certainly my DS2 had no problems with going straight from breastmilk only to chunks of stuff.

The teeth are not really an issue. They do most of their chewing with their gums, anyway - as we do most of our chewing with our molars, which they don't get until they're over one, at least.

mawbroon · 05/07/2006 14:13

My ds managed fine too with no choking. Any bits that he managed to bite off that were too big just got ejected from his mouth. It is very important that they are able to sit well too and don't end up slumped as the bits might not be able to fall out of the mouth IYSWIM.

DS had some peach at lunchtime today. I bit a little bit off and handed him the whole thing. Obviously I was sitting with him to make sure that he didn't get too close to the stone, but he managed to eat about half of it no bother at all.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 14:21

They do end up eating things you'd rather they didn't. DS2 has had some cherry stones. And rather a lot of egg shell. I don't think either have done him any harm.

mawbroon · 05/07/2006 14:27

Won't he get a cherry tree growing in his tummy then NQC?

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 14:32

I do worry about some sort of chicken/cherry hybrid growing in his stomach, but there are no signs of that ... yet ...

archiesmummy · 05/07/2006 15:52

i think ill start with the veg and perhaps chicken im making for us anyway, only obviosly wont spice it.

took ds to have him weighed today as he is 26 weeks and wanna put it in his baby book (which i'm sure is more for me than for him, really) and hv told me i had to start him on foods immidiately and within a week can have him on 3 meals a day!!!
why are these people ion such a hurry?

HV is totally, totally, utterly wrong on that, I'm afraid.

As for the choking thing - they do sometimes gag and look quite shocked about it, but real choking is v different - and also totally possible on a puree spooned too near the back of the mouth of a baby who wasn't expecting it.

mawbroon · 05/07/2006 19:02

My HV had never heard of BLW so I printed out Gill Rapley's item and gave it to her. I think I am quite lucky in that she just let me get on with it.

MrsBadger · 05/07/2006 19:04

round of applause for mawbroon for educating her HV!

mawbroon · 05/07/2006 20:18

Why thank you . My first ever round of applause on MN.

archiesmummy · 05/07/2006 21:20

Yeah, brilliant to let HV know she is wrong, wish I had done aswell now...
Anyway thought I'd let you all know that after all my worrying about what to offer DS I offered steamed carrot and green beans and he put green beans in mouth made "yuk" face and then discarded it. A bit more luck on the carrot sticks, as he actually tried chewing on one of them, but nothing more.
Not too bad for the very first time I think. Fascinating to see how he picks things up and then just forgets he's holding them, so just drops them.
Also he laughed like mad when he saw me eating carrot sticks from his tray. It has deff made my day

OP posts:
mawbroon · 05/07/2006 21:28

That sounds pretty similar to my ds's first attempt. You'll be surprised - I am willing to bet that there will be teeny flecks of carrot in his poo! Before long, he will be shoving the food in like there's no tomorrow!!

archiesmummy · 05/07/2006 21:30

I can't wait, it is a big step for him, isn't it??

OP posts:
mawbroon · 05/07/2006 22:10

I must confess to shedding a tear when I saw my little baby sitting in the highchair feeding himself.

archiesmummy · 05/07/2006 22:13

I understand so well what you mean mawbroon. So much nicer than trying to force a load of puree in their mouth, for both of you.

Oh you star for starting this thread! DS is 19 weeks and I've been leaning towards blw due to pure laziness (pureeing seems far too much hassle ), suddenly dawned on me today though... We have another month or two left, but then "How do I start?!"

This thread has answered it for me

archiesmummy · 09/07/2006 21:54

Excellent. Glad to help, even though I didn' actually help myself, I'm more than willing to take the credit LOL.
I can also proudly tell anyone who is interested that DS has had little bit of carrot in nappy twice now.
