6 month old hasn't pooed in 3 days

Today is day 4. He was EBF and now he's a week and a half into weaning, fruit purée once a day. Should I worry? He doesn't seem uncomfortable. Lots of wee, quite a few smelly farts (sorry for that lovely detail). Seems like he's 'straining' to go sometimes but nada.

I wouldn't worry. 7mo DD, bf until 6mo, has been through a few distinct phases with her poo! including one (pre weaning, but she was having some formula) where she pooed every third day like clockwork Hmm. Yes the farts were a shocker! I think the digestive system goes through some fairly marked changes on its way to maturity, which might explain it.

It definitely doesn't sound from what you've said like there is an obstruction

That said, you can help them along by gentle massage of the tum clockwise, massaging the feet is stimulating too, and if your LO will take a bottle (or you want to start introducing a sippy cup) give him some water. If you're doing any cereals, I would cut them out for now.

UniqueAndAmazing · 28/05/2013 16:19

don't wean him at 4 months, please.

but it's perfectly normal for a BF baby to go a few days without pooing.

is he still weeing?
and alright in himself?

rootypig · 28/05/2013 16:23

Unique the OP's DC is 6mo Hmm and she says he is weeing and seems fine.

OP have just been off to poke around, since am interested for my DD, who sometimes struggles to poo. Is your LO eating a lot of puree? he might have more fibre than he can cope with. When we started weaning we let DD pick up and nom on pieces of ripe fruit, so that she didn't take too much in, but got the taste and texture. Ripe pear, mango, papaya are good for that, and segments of orange (if you cut with a knife rather than peel they're nice and juicy for them to suck on).

This happened when my DS was about the same age and I was just as worried. I took him to the doctor who said he wouldn't be concerned until nothing had happened for two weeks!!

In the end we had a nappy explosion after about 6 or 7 days and he was absolutely regular after that. Never had the problem again.

UniqueAndAmazing · 28/05/2013 17:39

you knwo what, I totally read that wrong!
thank you!
i read Day 4 as 4months old baby!

sorry OP, i'm an idiot (can i blame my distracting toddler?)

Thanks for the advice everyone. Still no poo but I'm less worried. Tried massage after his bath tonight but nothing. The fibre thing could be an issue? My secret guilty concern is that I have recently changed my diet in an attempt to lose weight. I've cut out refined grains and am eating lots of veg, salad. I couldn't be messing up my milk could I? Plenty of calories consumed.

My DDs record was 12 days. If Lo is ebf and isn't in pain then they only recommend going to the doctors after 2 weeks with no poo.

No nappy time, lots of bfs and baby massage worked a bit for us. Just make sure you take a complete outfit everywhere with you and lots of wipes and nappies. Welcome to the world of poonami Grin

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 03/06/2013 16:45

Just to update, he finally went spectacularly on a flight to Dublin all over both of us. Still relieved! Thank you for advice and reassurance.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/06/2013 21:44

Ah if I'd known you were going on a flight I could have told you it would be then Grin. Little bugger!

rootypig · 03/06/2013 23:52

ha! change in pressure?! Grin

I wouldn't worry about a change in your diet, I can't imagine your milk would change so drastically, and it sounds as though you're eating more healthily....

I am trying to persuade my LO to drink water / work out how to use a sippy cup. She is cheerily disdainful and rather constipated as a result. I am putting dates in everything! Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 04/06/2013 09:17

Not sure if it would be the change in pressure or just Sod's law of it happening at the most inconvenient time! Smile

abi2790 · 05/06/2013 09:29

I've been weaning Ds for a couple of weeks and a couple of times he has gone 4/5 days without pooling. He always seems fine and his poo is always the right consistency and he doesn't struggle to get it out. I wouldn't worry about it unless you think he's showing signs of constipation.

UniqueAndAmazing · 05/06/2013 11:13

rooty - don't worry about it - just keep it at hand and she'll drink when she's thirsty.

UniqueAndAmazing · 05/06/2013 11:14

(DD tends to walk around with a sippy cup in each hand, sipping out of them in turn. 'tis vair funny)

rootypig · 05/06/2013 16:23

DD can't master the sippy cup! any tips?

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 10/06/2013 12:38

Help again please! He's now pooing daily but it's hurting him and he's straining and struggling every time he goes. He's having fruit puree or fruit mixed with baby rice twice a day and boob on demand. He's got a virus right now (which may or may not be chicken pox) and has a runny nose and mild temp so I've been giving calpol around twice a day too.
Does the sore poo warrant a visit to the GP?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/06/2013 14:27

I'd cut out the baby rice for a bit and see how you go. It could be the virus but if he is actually in pain when trying to go I'd see a GP. Please bare in mind though that not all GPs have knowledge of bfing so feel free to any advice given Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/06/2013 14:30

Oh and try him with some water dense foods like an ice lolly (you can even make them with ebmGrin), soup, water melon, cut grapes, broccoli and cauliflower. At 6 months he should be able to pick the fruit and veg up and eat them himself Smile

CatHackney · 10/06/2013 16:49

It's not constipation unless what comes out is hard and dry, in which case do follow the advice about water, ripe fruits, etc. My EBF 3-month old does a massive poo for which he strains a lot every few days, but as it is very wet, it's not constipation, just part of development. Bicycling the legs and massage can help.

CornishYarg · 10/06/2013 18:26

rootypig how old is your DD? I despaired of DS ever mastering the sippy cup when suddenly at 11 months there was no stopping him! Guess he just wasn't that thirsty till then as he was still drinking a reasonable amount of milk.

rootypig · 10/06/2013 22:53

Hello Yarg! thank you for asking. DD is - well, I'm not sure! I mean, in general she's marvellously chubby and chipper, but we've gone through so many stages of her bloody weaning I can hardly believe it's only been five weeks. Started BLW but out of curiosity, also tried purees, and she seemed to love them. Happy with purees and spoons for a bit, I merrily set about channelling Annabel Karmel with my own vegetabley creations Grin - that's when she got constipated (hard dry poos yy), so cut out the sweet potato and upped the fruit quotient = lots of giant poops (jolly good). But now in the last few days she is really tetchy about food - doesn't want to be fed, doesn't want to sit in her bumbo (which we use only for that), doesn't want finger food. But she is obsessed with milk (formula) and can't get enough of it. Utterly disdains water - hasn't mastered the sippy cut and also gets really cross when it comes near her (I tend to just put it in reach). Tried her bottle with water in it (when she was constipated) and as soon as she worked out it wasn't milk, that was the end of that.

All in all, it feels like a bit of a mess! I am trying to stay relaxed and letting her do her own thing, reminding myself that milk is still the main show in town. DH and I were laughing earlier about the insight we are getting into our daughter's independence and iron will! Hmm

Any thoughts or shared experience welcome!

rootypig · 10/06/2013 22:56

Good lord Cornish Yarg all that yapping and I didn't answer your question! Blush. Sorry, it's late and I've been thinking about all this anyway. She is 7mo.

OP, no great advice for your DS but lots of sympathy. I hate to see / hear DD straining and frustrated, or ill. Cutting out the baby cereal as well as sticky veg like sweet potato really helped her. Oh and I made a fruit puree with a few dates and dried (soaked) apricots added, if he's still eating well enough to have something like that.

Theyoniwayisnorthwards · 10/06/2013 23:33

Thanks everyone, out goes the baby rice and in comes more fruit then. What do you all say to oats mixed with breast milk and a bit of hot water?
