it's full of E numbers. Anyone use it with their lo's?
What could I use instead? How about humous?

how old?
Hummus our dd loves, also philadephia or cream cheese
dairylea is crapola :)

velcrobott · 13/04/2006 20:25

dairylea??? why???? that's not even "real" cheese? Why did she suggest it....

starlover · 13/04/2006 20:25

nope I wouldn't use it

how about cream cheese?
hummous would be fine too

velcrobott · 13/04/2006 20:26

And bread sticks... depends on which ones but that's not great either !!! It's empty calories....

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:26

unbelievably salty too, positively dangerous for babies.

sackable offence IMO, what a loony HV

cupcakes · 13/04/2006 20:27

very weird advice imo.

jmum6 · 13/04/2006 20:34

Philadelphia's ok for babies? Mine is 7months. Agree with the empty calories for breadsticks.

We were having a discussion about how to get ds to eat more solids (never seems hungry, happily only eat a spoon or two at a time etc and she suggested dairylee and breadsticks.

I suppose I could use toast instead. Is hummous ok for 7month babies?

I think breadsticks are fine for getting babies used to finger foods... as long as you aren't giving them to her for a meal! just use them as a snack alongside something else

Piffle · 13/04/2006 20:36

good wholemeal crackers are another option for the right age kiddy.
Breadsticks are only as empty caloried as a piece of white toast so nowt in it tbh and if using it scoop up high protein hummus and cheese then nutritionally there is plenty to be pleased anbout!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:37

hummous is great food - chickpeas and olive oil basically. excellent for babies.
breadsticks not a bad idea as a vehicle for getting something nutritious to their mouths (eg hummous) but dairylea???????
Wouldn't eat it myself, why would I give it to a baby? Poor thing.

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:37

snap piff Grin

Piffle · 13/04/2006 20:38

humus often has tahini in it, which is sesame seed pulp. this can cause allergic reactions in nut allergy susceptible kids
Be aware if this runs in your family
Dd has had it since 7 mths. also watch the salt in hummous too

velcrobott · 13/04/2006 20:38

I think you need to focus on finger foods (baby led weaning) like cucumber, pieces of of pear and other softer fruits/veg... babies are good at chewing without teeth.
7 months isn't a worry though ! A lot of babies only show a real interest in food at 8 months.

Piffle · 13/04/2006 20:38

OMG I agree with a Royal
My mother will shoot me Grin
Ps PPH I want your shoes :)

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:42

well then have them, dear subject, have them

Mercy · 13/04/2006 20:45

Organix do breadsticks - but i think they are from 12 months plus but tbh a younger baby could deal with them (not 6 mths tho)

Mercy · 13/04/2006 20:49

'A lot of babies only show a real interest in food at 8 months.'

No must disagree, sorry!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:50

rice cakes are good, they sort of sog up and dissolve in their mouth. good chewing practice with little choking.

Caligula · 13/04/2006 20:51

Blimey. Doubtless she's advising someone else to try turkey twizzlers with chips to boost energy intake

velcrobott · 13/04/2006 20:53

Mercy ? Why do you disagree ? It didn't say all....

welshboris · 13/04/2006 20:54

"diarylee" ?????

Mercy · 13/04/2006 20:54

Of course, rice cakes!, mine still scoff them (apple ones only though)

Mercy · 13/04/2006 21:02

No you didn't say 'all', but you did say 'a lot' and 'real interest' Not necessarily true ime.

pupuce · 13/04/2006 21:07

dairylea... what ever next ???
There was a good article in Junior Birth and Pregnancy a few weeks ago about baby led weaning... very interesting I thought.
As a doula I see a LOT of babies and some are eaters and others are just not! I would not worry about your 7 months old solid intake. Milk is still a very important (and well balanced) food.
There are babies who show no interest at all until they are 1.
Did you/are you BF ? I find that does impact some babies interest in solids... i.e. long term BF "tend" to start really eating solids later.

kiskidee · 13/04/2006 22:22

you can make your own cheesy dip. take a piece of cheddar, break up and put in the blender with milk. add more or less milk depending on the consistency you want.

take the whatever baby doesn't want and add jalapeno or other hot pepper sauce to it. combine with nacho chips and lager. Wink
