Over heard conversation in Asda today re: jars

jmum6 · 12/04/2006 16:40

Was in Asda buying follow on milk when 2 women came looking at the baby food.

'Really can't be doing with cooking for him' says one woman.

'No' says the other 'what a waste of time.'

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. :o

ohhh noo...baby organix pea and sweetcorn smells delicious and no orange!

intergalacticwalrus · 12/04/2006 17:54

PMSL bitsamaloney.

I think tbh calling feeding your child jars child abuse is harsh. If that's the case, I have "abused" DS when we have been away for the weekend etc.

I personally find it much cheaper and easier to give DS a bit of whatever I have cooked for dinner for DP and myself and if I had to cook separate stuff, I'd do something simple like tomato pasta etc which takes 5 seconds to prepare and costs a few pennies

Enid · 12/04/2006 17:54

pea and f*cking sweetcorn

HOW easy is that to make yourself

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 17:55

would you be picking niblets by hand?

Enid · 12/04/2006 17:55

ahem

I know none of you will listen as you have the bit between your teeth but I did say feeding jars 24/7 was, IMO, child abuse

LadyTophamHatt · 12/04/2006 17:58

TBH, it was bloody infuriating because ds2 had loved my cooking and I was proud of the fact that I cooked it all.

And....I found it embarrasing to buy loads of jarred food because I hated people thinking I was too lazy to do it myself.

Even as a ex-Jar feeder I think it now when I see a trolley laddened and obviously I should know better.

sweetkitty · 12/04/2006 17:58

oh no notanotter have actually bought that one and it looks like snot although anything green looks like snot once mushed up!

bitsamaloney · 12/04/2006 17:58

it's still not abuse though. feeding them gravy and powedered mashed potato is abuse, not specially made babyfood.

Mytwopenceworth · 12/04/2006 17:58

I used jars and i used to cook too, place for both imo.

oh, and in the true spirit of mumsnet

my dh once gave ds1 a jar of chocolate pudding for breakfast and anyone who hasn't done the exact same thing is abusive and neglectful. so there.

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 17:59

I am ashamed to buy them Blush

Piffle · 12/04/2006 18:06

Enid did say feeding them 24/7 as in every meal was evil - not using them as part of a decent diet mixed in with fresher prepared food.

Enid · 12/04/2006 18:08

ta piffle

noone cares though Wink

desperateSCOUSEstrife · 12/04/2006 18:08

used jars when doing very hot spicey stuff for dinner
and when out sometimes for convinience really

rest of the time it was homemade

LadyTophamHatt · 12/04/2006 18:09

Breakfast was weetabix or something similar too BTW, no jars at brekkie.

iota · 12/04/2006 18:10

weetabix comes out of a packet though - you should have been growing your own wheat and hand-threshing it Wink

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 18:12

Stripping the husks off with your teeth before nipping out in your home knitted shoes (?) to milk th goat.

Better still leaning over the pan with your dripping breast....

Mytwopenceworth · 12/04/2006 18:12

enid. are you suggesting that we listen, read, and mentally digest the actual post you made instead of coming after you with pitchforks?

where's the fun in that? do you know nothing? I just went out for popcorn, if everyone starts being nice, you owe me £1.92

iota · 12/04/2006 18:14

yes its only child abuse on the days you use jars - a bit like only beating your child twice a week instead of daily

LadyTophamHatt · 12/04/2006 18:21

Enid, Do you know when I first read your child abuse post my heckles went up and I got all huffy thinking "Pah...child abuse....FFS...ggrrrrrr...what is she on about....ohh that's rather OTT!!" but I didn't say it because I like you and didn't want to argue and well we're allowed differnt opinions.

Then I sat and thought how much I bloody hated buying them, even though it was convient, how much I hated putting them in my shopping(I'd try and hide them!!), I even hated putting the jars out for the glass collection lorry so I suppose I do kind of see where you're coming from. It nots difficult to make up 10-20 little tubs of food in a few hours even when you've got children already.

I suppose I'm almost a hypocrite....but its' ds3's faultGrin

schneebly · 12/04/2006 18:22

I wouldnt slag anyone off for solely using jars - it is their perogative and their money but I couldnt afford to even if I wanted too and I enjoy knowing that my DS's have eaten something nutritious that I made - probably more for my own gratification than anything. We have had the odd jar on holiday and going out but I dont feel bad about it!

TheBlonde · 12/04/2006 18:24

Jars are fab
I worked out how much it cost to puree the damn butternut squash myself and the jar was cheaper!

Enid · 12/04/2006 18:25

lol my2pworth

LadyTophamHatt · 12/04/2006 18:27

The blonde, pureeing them is Ok it bloody peeling the things that got me!

(especially as it went un-f*cking-eaten)

Enid · 12/04/2006 18:28

it wouldnt have been cheaper if you mixed the butternut squash with water and maltodextrin to make it go further Wink

TheBlonde · 12/04/2006 18:28

The worst thing for peeling has to be pears - so much peel for so little fruit
