QUICK POLL! Which one for first food?

DS is 6 months and I gave him baby rice for the first time yesterday, but I'm ready to just dive in with real food. I've got organic potatoes, carrots and sweet potates.
Which should I give him tonight?

we have just started becky on carrot

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/03/2006 16:22

that's the way i'm leaning too

carrots. then sweet potatoes. Ordinary potatoes aren't that appetising I don't think - maybe try them mixed with other stuff a bit later?
Try fruit like pear and apple too?

Racers · 16/03/2006 16:23

sweet pot was the only one DD would have more than one spoon of*, so i'm voting for that.

*2 to be precise!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/03/2006 16:23

i'm gonna do savoury first before i start on fruit i think.

Broccoli for us, and carrot. Nice and easy for baby to hold and although broccoli gets absolutely everywhere, some eventually reappears in the nappy.

Twiglett · 16/03/2006 19:56

carrots

starlover · 16/03/2006 19:56

potato made ds really sick the first few times.

would go for sweet potato or carrot

FrannyandZooey · 16/03/2006 19:58

Not potato. I think potato best left till older, it's not a particularly nutritious food and IME not very popular with little ones.

satine · 16/03/2006 19:58

I did apple first, then carrot, parsnip and sweet potato. Never bothered with baby rice - looked like wallpaper paste!

chocolateshoes · 16/03/2006 20:20

We did pear 1st then carrot. DS loved them both. I'd leave normal pots til later on when you can mix them into things, but babies generally love sweet pots.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/03/2006 20:23

agree about the wallpaper paste. DS smelled a little 'pasty' all day after having it for breakfast.
In the end I went with carrots. He ate some but i think it wasn;t smooth enough for him. mixed a little with the baby rice at first which he ate.
But i think he was distracted by the dog/his dad/background noise so he wasn;t that into it.
After he eats though he's in a brilliant mood! so loving that aspect of it. But it sure is a lot more work than lifting up my shirt!!

My DD is being weaned at the moment, so far she has had these:

  • carrot & potato (mostly carrot)
  • carrot & sweed (again, mostly carrot)
  • mango (loved it after initial taste)
  • avacado (did't go down too well!)
  • blueberry & apple (she gobbles this down!)
  • bananna

She hates rice & rusks.

I'm spending a load of time Sunday cooking and freezing so I've got food for when DD goes to the CM while she has something to eat.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 16/03/2006 20:46

Elf1981 - you are much more adventurous than I! HOw long have you been giving solids for?

OP posts:
Elf1981 · 16/03/2006 20:55

Only a few weeks but I wanted to try a few combinations to see how they went.

fisil · 16/03/2006 20:56

ds2 had banana as his very first food - didn't even bother with baby rice. Reason? I just suddenly decided one lunchtime to wean him, and didn't even want to wait to cook some veg!

sazhig · 16/03/2006 23:14

Ds' (now 20 months) first foods:

Carrot sticks (steamed)
apple & pear wedges (raw with skin on)
Plain rice cakes

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/03/2006 08:03

Wow sazhig!
How old was your DS at the time?
And how did it go?
I debated about whether to give pick-up-able pieces but wasn't sure if he'd get the whole swallowing thing so I thought I'd try something mushier first.
I guess it depends on the baby too.

mummygow · 17/03/2006 08:12

DS had carrot first, then sweet potatoe, broccolie, cauliflour, turnip, potatoe (didnt really like) green beans, apple, pear, bananna (not a huge success) but def think carrot first and pear as a fruit first as apple can be acidy!!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/03/2006 14:11

What i said before about him being in a brilliant mood? Scratch that.

For Sale: One male baby. Cheap.

kipper22 · 17/03/2006 14:14

carrot carrot carrot (still have to mix it with new things to convince DS he will like them)!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/03/2006 14:15

We just had our first post solids poo. The carrots came out looking the same as they went it. that's normal right?

He was 1 week off 7 months. I wanted to wait until he was 7 months but he looked so mourneful when we ate that we caved & gave him some carrot sticks on sunday lunch time. He picked them up straight away & munched away. He didn't actually eat anything that day, but did the next day when I gave him carrot sticks again (evidence in his nappy!). I was very lazy at first and didn't give him much in the way of solids though until the following month. He gagged occasionally for a few weeks on lots of things, but I never had to intervene at all - he always managed to deal with the food himself. He would occasioanlly throw up as well if he gagged too much. But even that didn't bother him - he would just carry on eating again Grin.

TBH this has been a complete joy to do & I would never go down the puree route with any other babies I have (DS is my first) as they just seem like far to much work! From the reading I have done if a baby cannot pick up food, put it in their mouth, chew & swallow it then they aren't ready for solids! It seemed a bit pointless to me to get them used to purees, when they won't actually be eating puress as an adult. If you start with purees then you have to teach them all over again how to deal with lumpier food & proper food - seem a bit pointless to me - why not just give them proper food to start with! Much easier for the mum as well!

DS has excellent hand eye coordinbation as a result of having to feed himself and can even use a spoon and fork well now as well so its even helped with his development! He eats pretty much everything we put in front of him! He is very good at trying new things as well. People always remark on how well he eats! Grin

emmawill · 17/03/2006 14:25

Carrots they love the sweetness and its easy for them to eat.

Emma1404 · 17/03/2006 14:25

no one has mentioned butternut squash....my dd of 11 months loved it. I rented out the Lorraine Kelly baby and toddler cookbook from the library and photocopied it if anyone is interested in a copy ill send them one. its very good.
