Last minute nerves on curry for DD, reassurance please?!

Quickly did a chicken curry during naptime and now wondering if it will be ok. DD 7.5m, seems to like tasty cheeses, spag bol but this is first curry.
Just used onions, garlic and yellow peppers, the chicken (minced) and a bit of cumin, some tomato puree and lo-salt stock, oh and a bit of creamed coconut block. Have put some creme fraiche in at the end to make it more creamy.
Does this sound ok? Wondering now if trying her with cumin and garlic at same time is a good idea?!

Personally can't she why not, it's the sort of thing mine ate at that age.

MarsOnLife · 25/01/2006 16:36

It'll be fine!

Sounds rather lovely!

moondog · 25/01/2006 16:37

No probs!
Mine have been gulping this stuff down since about the same age.
Add some boiled rice and a dollop of yoghurt-she'll love it!

Racers · 25/01/2006 16:38

oh thanks, lovely people - nice to be able to get the reassurance. Just made it up as I went along, you see!

She's up now and about to try it...

She's not impressed so far! Ah well. Seems to be in a finger food mood I think. I'll just have to polish it off myself and try again another time.

Thanks again.

You could always freeze a portion and try again another day.

moondog · 25/01/2006 16:57

Yes,try again!

Kelly1978 · 25/01/2006 16:57

my older two loved curry froma very young age. Now I have twins who are half indian and they loath it! dt1 was desperately trying to wipe all trace of it off his tongue when I gave it him. Better luck next time tho!

Trophywife · 25/01/2006 17:02

my ds was eating curries as soon as he was 6.5 mths and now at 3 he eats quite hot ones. you will have a lovely nappy in the morning though...

LeftOverTurkey · 25/01/2006 17:10

Sounds lovely - can I come round?
My boys, ds1 in particular, both ate curry in preference to a lot of foods almost as soon as they could eat. I think I gave ds1 a bit of ours in desperation after he had rejected all the bland foods he was supposed to like, and we never looked back
Didn't agonise about ds2, didn't care what he ate as long as he ate. Both big teenage hunks now!!

Racers · 25/01/2006 17:18

Yes, you can leave your leftover turkey behind though, LOL! (not a turkey fan, but am made to have it at xmas!)

LeftOverTurkey · 25/01/2006 23:09

lol
Hmmm, sounds like time to change my seasonal name before I get curried. What to change it to though? vindaloo maybe?

Racers · 26/01/2006 10:42

um, I think it should be a MN rule - if you don't change your xmas name by 6th Jan, you have to keep it all year!

Sadeyedladyofthelowlands · 26/01/2006 12:39

My dd is 8 months, I'd love to give her this kind of thing! Didn't know I could even try, wow, got any more recipies?

Racers · 26/01/2006 14:16

sadeyedlady, go for it! um, I'm not good on recipies though. Thought about doing something with lemon and pepper with some of the minced chicken. I have come coriander, so am going to add that to today's portion of yesterday's curry I think. Coriander goes well into a tomato based curry, with lime or lemon. I'm trying to get some herbs and spices into her meals to provide a bit of variety/stimulation.

Getting the hang of a white/cheese sauce has helped me as I can no do cauli cheese and fish pie. I guess that would do for a pasta meal too (the cheesy sauce).

Do you still puree baby food? DD wont eat lumps yet. Could I mix basmalti rice into a curry like that to help her on the way to lumpy food do you think?

Ironmaiden · 26/01/2006 14:33

Do you use tinned tomatoes?

Ironmaiden · 26/01/2006 14:34

How do you make cheese sauce???

Ironmaiden · 26/01/2006 14:34

I'm so excited!!! Sorry

MarsOnLife · 26/01/2006 14:37

easy white sauce.

butter, flour and milk all in same pot. Turn on heat and whisk.

always smooth. add cheese or mushrooms or onions

Racers · 26/01/2006 17:10

Sorry, I had to come away earlier!

DD had a few spoons of same curry mix tonight, so that's progress already. I mixed yoghurt instead of creme fraiche and put some fresh coriander in.

She has never taken to pureed food (only fruits, she is happy with those) and she happily eats bits the size of a petit pois or bigger so minced meat is ok.

I have used tinned tomatoes yes, the ones already chopped. Make sure no added salt and sugar. I have bought some seived tomatoes to try as well.

White sauce is roughly 50g butter, 50g flour, 1pt milk (I found it best to warm the milk a bit)

It is exciting isn't it? Curry is my fave so I'm hoping DD will like it too. She's off to a good start I think.

Thanks a million! New horizons are opening up!!! So fed up with sweet potatoe and butternut squash purees and chicken stew! And I wouldn't be surprised if DD is too!

Racers · 29/01/2006 18:54

I did a recipie from NCT weaning book and she wolfed it down. It was

1 breast chicken (mine was minced)
1 onion
1 apple
1 banana
200g tomatoes
1tsp cumin
1tsp mild curry powder

fry onion with spices until soft, add chicken and brown. add tomatoes, simmer 5 mins, add chopped apple and sliced banana, simmer 10 mins

Racers, you could just add some Garam Masala to mixed veggies. DS (7mths) loves this with some basmati. It'll be poppadums next! By the way, we must have been in RLI at much the same time - I was the only one whoose lo didn't sleep at night!
