Hi I have just started weaning my boys, and we are about too move house and im looking at buying highchairs.

I have been looking at the ikea ones, they seem small enough, are plastic and basically does what it says on the tin...just want to know of they are safe as they dont seem to have a very big back and my one son tends to throw himself backwards a lot....??

Also how long are they in the highchairs for....

Thanks....

We have an Antilop for DS, aged six and a half months. Easy to clean and perfect for us. We put a cushion behind him to avoid him bumping his head at the back but it's ideal and super cheap!

I have an Antilop. First I bought a Tripp Trapp, but DC just threw everything around the curved bar at the front. So then went on and bought an Ikea Antilop, which all three of mine have used. As the next one comes up to weaning so the older one gets evicted. (around 2 1/2, although some people's DC will sit nicely on chairs without the use of a stapler before this point). The stuffed animals use the Tripp Trapp.

Would recommend the Antilop ++
I also put a cushion behind them when they are wee to stop them slippng backwards.

We have the antilop. Love it. So easy to clean. Still using a cushion behind DD at 9 months, so plenty big enough for a while.

Indith · 26/10/2011 09:17

The antilop is the king of highchairs. They can stay in them until they are big enough to sit in a proper chair. There is absolutely no point in buying anything more expensive!

minicorrect · 26/10/2011 09:24

DD1 is a small 2.7 and still easily fits in hers - tray removed so she can sit at the table properly. Great buy and easy to clean.

MrsKitty · 26/10/2011 09:26

Antilop, safe & hardwearing. Both DC were in it until they were 2-2.5. When DS went through his phase of standing in his chair I got a D-Ring harness (few £ in supermarket) and attached that so he couldn't escape the lap belt!

Don't waste money on anything else - you'll regret it!

libelulle · 26/10/2011 09:27

it is brilliant, easy to clean and compact. Just remember to use the restraining strap as otherwise, one fine day you will walk in to find baby has worked out how to clamber out and is halfway across the kitchen table, looking proud

nulgirl · 26/10/2011 09:30

I loved ours. It did 2 children and was so easy to clean. All my friends had the big cushioned chicco ones and they were so hard to clean and looked really disgusting after a while. I think you can buy reins to keep them in if you are worried. They also do an inflatable cushion for the back or you can just bung a normal cushion down the back.

ObviouslyOblivious · 26/10/2011 09:33

I have the inflatable cushion for mine - DS (who isn't small for 9 months) still needs the cushion otherwise he reclines like a teenager.

Firawla · 26/10/2011 09:38

i have a (quite big for his age) nearly 2 yr old in it and he fits fine. its so much better than all the chico highchairs that you can buy in mothercare etc, because it has nowhere to trap dirt and its so much easier to clean and more hygenic i think.

plupervert · 26/10/2011 09:43

The Antilop is very good. We have three in various different places (home, MIL's house, etc.). It suits being used every day and also being stored, as the legs can be taken off and the seat doesn't have a lot of crevices for food to rot in during the weeks between uses (if being used as a "spare" chair or being kept with family).

The legs are splayed, so it's harder for children to tip over, although not impossible. I reckon it is outgrown at around 2yo.

GlaikitFizzogOnaNeepyLantern · 26/10/2011 09:45

Another thumbs up here for the antilop. ds has just started weaning and we have the Inflatable cushion.

Methe · 26/10/2011 09:47

My small almost 3yo is still using his daily. Antilops are awesome!

purcellfan · 26/10/2011 10:02

Antilop, totally brilliant and still using at 2.4. We also use it for painting etc as so easy to clean!

Hellsbellsp · 26/10/2011 13:29

Ditto to all the good reviews of Antilop.
Fantastic for smaller babies too when used with the inflatable insert (bought separately), very easy to clean, no small seams or crevices for food to drop into, easy to store, easy to take on holls, fab fab fab!

emsyj · 26/10/2011 18:45

We've given away our £80 Cosatto high chair and now use the Antilop full time. It is the best high chair - so simple, easy to clean, light as a feather to lift - cannot fault it.

We didn't use it until DD was about 10 months old, but you can use it from very early on with the inflatable insert - believe (from a friend who used it) that it works a treat, but we didn't buy one so can't give a personal report.

StetsonsAreCool · 29/10/2011 21:45

We used the Antilop from 6 months without the cushion, DD has always sat very primly upright. I love how easy it is to wipe down. We've taken the tray off now and pulled her right up to the table (she's 17mo now). We have one of these to protect the table, and we take it out in the changing bag if we're eating out. But that's off topic.

vj32 · 29/10/2011 23:21

I have thought about getting one of these but not sure how long they will last - my ds is only 5 months but really the size of a 1 year old. I know its cheap but don't see the point getting it if I need to get another in 6 months anyway. Anyone got a big big baby? Above 98 centile?

deviladvocate · 29/10/2011 23:31

We loved ours for the first stage of weaning but found our kids figured out how to climb out by about age 1 - we had another highchair with reins so just switched them into that one. We still use it though, we keep it in the car for when we're at friend's houses or visiting family. Brilliant product.

Northernlurker · 29/10/2011 23:33

dd3 is still in her antilop at the table and she is 4.5

Ozziegirly · 02/11/2011 05:50

Wish we had got one - DS sits happily in them in cafes and hates his more expensive high chair which is crap, such a pain to clean, take apart and put together. I reckon if any parent asked for my one piece of advice it would be to buy an Ikea chair! I am kind of hoping our chair suffers a terrible accident so that I can replace it.....

neepsntatties · 02/11/2011 06:00

Love ours, Ds used it until he was 3 and now Dd is in it , fantastic buy!

LargeGlassofRed · 02/11/2011 06:06

My big twin boys 2.5 98th centile still fit in theirs I love them, easy to take with you when travelling and they stack so if you need more than one they re ideal. I've got 5 Dc's and have looked after lots if others and they are by far the best highchairs out there.

Tinkerisdead · 02/11/2011 06:17

We had one. Best value bit of baby kit ever nearly three years of use for about 15 quid. I used it for crafting, feeding, if it got too stained i'd spray with a kitchen cleaner with bleach and blast with the hose or shower. No food in creases it's a dream. I had the inflatable cushion when dd was little. She came out of it at 2.5 only because she wanted to sit like a big girl not size issue.

The one and only drawback is that you do tend to trip over it's splayed legs!

rumcrumble · 02/11/2011 06:23

The best thing is its so easy to transport - we take ours camping, weekends at in-laws, other people's houses if we're going for tea etc. No bother.
