Ok starting weaning tomorrow, being a bit PFB and off to buy a steamer today Smile

I have twins who are now 6 months & 1 day old

Don't really have much of an idea what i'm doing & am not looking forward to the mess though Hmm

Does anyone want to join the thread and we can discuss how well it's going/not going?

hi pink, dd poked most of the food back out of her mouth the first few days but now will open her mouth each time and swallows it so its just a case of keep trying i think, give some finger foods too and hopefully some will go in Smile
less sleep and crying makes me think its awind problem, are they having too much food?

Pink79 · 12/05/2011 09:35

Thanks familyfun,

He's not crying it's more like shouting out of frustation/annoyance maybe? Not sure how to handle it. Should I ignore it? I've been trying to distract him by singing/playing with him, but dont know whether I'm just encouraging him to shout for more attention iykwim.

He had an infection a couple of months ago, following surgery and we had to give antibiotics orally for a week and I'm convinced that's why he hates being spoon fed. I don't think i've got the confidence to do exclusive BLW as i'd worry he wasn't actually eating much. Fingers crossed he'll get the hang of it soon.

ZimboMum · 12/05/2011 11:05

Hi pink, we have the shouting as well from 25 week old DS. It's real 'Ra Ra Raaaa Ra Ra Raaaa' shouting! His dad loves it when he comes home from work and has a 'conversation' with him. However if its been incessant all day, I'm pretty much ready to scream!

However, I don't think there's anything wrong and feel its just another developmental thing they go through - learning to use their voicee!

Lainey1981 · 12/05/2011 14:35

Marking my place. Started weaning ds last week ( he id 23.5 weeks) so far up to a couple tsps of baby rice muxed with his formula at tea time. Tried a taste of banana which he didn't like.
I just gave him mushed up sweet potato with his 1pm feec and really liked it, though gagged a bit on the lumps.
Feel clueless on how to progress from tastes up to meals.
Wish i had had the confidence to blw but think will introduce fingers foods this week too
so far his sleeping is just the same, but poos are up from once to twice a day and different colour. Tmi sorry

Lainey1981 · 12/05/2011 14:43

Oh and pinky, sorry if you already know but babies can stay on stage one formula, there is no need to move them onto follow on milk. Also the formula packet is just a guide based on an average baby.
My ds (23weeks) is on 5 x 7oz a day and is a big boy ( most of his weight is his giant head Grin
he has also become a shouty baby, just a developmental, look i can use my voice thing I reckon.

emza78 · 12/05/2011 17:42

My Lo has become more screamy - pretty annoying but normally means she wants to play!

Going to start the weaning on Sunday now, I'm pretty excited! Did everyone start with baby rice? I really would like to skip it and go straight to the good veggie stuff but HV suggested starting with it so they get used to eating without too much of a shock as it tastes the same as formula apparently. I'm so sick of giving her fake stuff though, really want her to be on nice healthy veggies etc.

Pink79 · 13/05/2011 16:28

Thanks Ladies,

We had a bit of a breakthrough today and my LO is now eating purees from a spoon! It took about a week and a half of perseverence though.

Zimbomum, your post made me smile - exactly the same thing happens in our house, think I'm getting used to the noise and zoning out when DH comes home and 'chats' with our son.

Thanks for the advice x

Morebounceperounce · 14/05/2011 21:56

Hope weaning is going well for everyone, good to hear that little Pink has cracked spoon feeding.

Am a bit concerned here that DD is developing a voracious appetite and is on three cubes of puree (different flavour combos) at lunchtime and a small bowlful of baby porridge in the evening by day 6 of weaning. I think she'd eat more, given the chance, but is easily distracted so it doesn't escalate to meltdown at the end of each meal. Still having plenty of milk feeds but I don't know whether to up the solids and let her set the pace or take it a bit steady, as I'm worried about making her poorly. Anyone got any experience/ideas?

familyfun · 15/05/2011 23:03

on day 14, dd is on 2 meals a day now and eating much more with a big wide mouth ready and she grumbles if im too slow Grin
she has eaten carrot, brocolli, sweet potato, apple, pear, banana, porridge and loves it all.
what quantity is right, she is 25 weeks and having 5/6 spoonfulls.

emza78 · 16/05/2011 20:52

Well Sunday (the first day) seemed a bit hit and miss - not really sure how much DD took down but she seemed to enjoy it! Today was much better, she had around 2 tablespoons I think of carrot puree and had one less milk feed today so sure she took most of it down.

Familyfun - which 2 meals are you doing? At the moment we're doing our feed at 1030 after the morning nap as LO is very happy and lively at this time, when it's time to up to the second meal I thought of doing it around 430 as we're usually home at this time and I thought it might fill her up so she starts sleeping thru the night again, does that sound ok? Or is it better to do a meal at lunchtime?

familyfun · 17/05/2011 22:10

i started with dinner at 5 and have just started lunch at 12, breakfast will have to be 9.15 when im back from school run as dont have time before.

ZimboMum · 18/05/2011 05:35

Morning all!

Weaning going really well is our house. DS has breakfast when he wakes for the day - currently 8.30/9ish of baby muesli with added fruit purée and expressed bm and then his lunch at about 12/1ish of pureed veg followed by prunes mixed with yoghurt. Prunes def seem to be helping his tummy and he's now back to his usual sleep routine of down for the night by 9.30, wake at 4/5 for a feed then sleep to 8.30/9.

Not sure when to start introducing a third meal though, we might stick with just two for another few weeks. Looking forward to introducing meat etc soon as he will be 6 mo on Friday.

Hope everyone else is having fun and its going well.

emza78 · 18/05/2011 19:59

Hi all,

Just wondering what everyone's doing about milk feeds - ie how they fit in around meals? I'm currently offering bottle after a meal but LO is obiously taking less as full from the meal. Maybe I should start giving bottle before meal? Or waiit a while after the food?

familyfun · 18/05/2011 21:22

my thought is milk is more important than food at the moment so i do feeds first. most days its'
6am, bf
10am bf
12pm pureed veg
1.30 bf
4.30 bf
5 pureed fruit
7.30 bf
bed 8 -6

familyfun · 18/05/2011 21:23

dd2 is 6 months today Smile
she is taking all pureed veg and fruit and also baby porridge.
what "meals" shall i try her with now? any ideas?

Morebounceperounce · 19/05/2011 13:57

Really pleased that your LO is getting on better now Zimbomum, is his sleep any better?

Familyfun The Petit Appetit book I've got suggests mashed up lentils/beans/rice with the veg as a next step on? It also suggests pureeing some minced beef or chicken to introduce meat.

emza78 · 19/05/2011 20:47

Thanks Familyfun - I tried milk before feed today and she was too full for the food an hour later, doh! Have to try leaving it more time tomorrow, but then nap time starts to loom.. then again I did give her potato today which even to my taste is pretty boring (especially after the treat of pear yesterday!) - maybe she just didn't like it.. Happy half birthday to DD2!

ZimboMum · 20/05/2011 07:16

Thanks morebounce. we're going to start introducing lentils and meat etc next week which is quite exciting! DS sleep seems to be better now - now doubt this too shall pass!- and after spending the evening practicing his rolling on weds he then slept from 10pm - 9am Shock :o

How are things going with you?

Morebounceperounce · 20/05/2011 20:48

Wow 10pm to 9am is amazing ZimboMum! I feel a bit zombified from the 4.30 starts but at least it's better than the 2am wakeups we've been having. We've been having some epic post-spinach poos too, which DH and I are weirdly fascinated by!

DD is not too big on drinking water with her meals though, either from a sippy cup or beaker. She either dribbles out most of it, sprays is out or blows bubbles in the beaker. Anyone else have this?

tried dd2 with chicken and sweet potato today and she ate it and the chicken was tiny lumps Smile. that was her first meat.
i havent given her any water yet, not sure she needs it as she is bf but might start offering it to get her used to a cup.

anyone else's dc taking more milk since weaning. dd has started having an extra feed mid morning and mid afternoon and my supply is increasing as my boobs feel almost engorged again? weird as i expected her to have less milk if anything.

is there an age when they should be having 3 meals a day and when do they need snacks?

dd just having lunch and dinner still.

Olivetti · 22/05/2011 21:41

Hi, please can I come back to this thread?
DD is 6 months + 1 week, has had one "taste" session a day this week. So far she's had carrot, sweet potato or porridge. Will move up to 2 this coming week.
I feel clueless, though - when do you know to cut down milk? She currently has 4 bfs a day, and 7oz formula at 10:30pm, sleeps until 7-8am.
So when do you decide that a meal replaces milk?!!

DuelingFanjo · 22/05/2011 22:04

Wave to Lavita. I'm starting in the middle of June so I will follow this thread with interest. Going to do BLW too.

familyfun · 23/05/2011 09:44

olivetti, milk is most important till they are 1 so just keep bf on demand. mine is bf more now?

Olivetti · 23/05/2011 10:18

But aren't you gradually meant to drop some milk feeds as they take more from solids?
