5.5 month old stopped drinking milk and refusing solids and wakes screaming at night

Hi everyone,
We are having a nightmare with our dd. She will be 6months on Sunday. For the past 2 weeks she is refusing her normal milk feeds. Due to is we thought we would introduce solids, but she refuses them too. People keep telling us it's teething, but there are no signs of any teeth and the dr checked as well and didn't think it was teething related. Dr told us she was fine, but she clearly is not. She is very unsettled, isn't sleeping well, and now even waking for night feeds as she doesn't feed enough in the day. Last night she woke for a feed and then every hour after 3am screaming.

She is also quite grumpy and whinges all day. And she has always a fussy feeder. It has never been easy feeding her milk but now it is getting ridiculous.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am at my wits end and very exhausted. :(

Thanks for your responses.

Has she been ill at all? Any fevers?

The worst pain of teething is before teeth actually come through, as they move upwards through the gum before surfacing as tiny, sharp points. So it could be teething, but IME, it didn't change my boys' feeding habits as dramatically as your DD's.

So I would take her to be checked out by the GP, again, and if you don't get any joy, try a paediatrician.

I hope you find a solution soon - it's awful for you all to be so sleep-deprived and worried.

She hasn't had any temperature or been ill, which is why it's so confusing!

If it's teething I hope it goes away soon! Both me and dh are exhausted!

I am going to try a paediatrician if she is like this over the weekend. The dr keeps on telling me she is ok, but she is not ok. She is usually so happy, its is so out of character to be like this.

I hope we find a solution soon too!

Hello its ounds like what my little boy was like and they changed his milk to lactose intolerence because everytime he went to take his milk he would scream and get a very noisy tummy. has that been looked at ?

ellahbells · 20/01/2011 09:07

ooops that was ment to say sound sorry.

She is already on nutramigen as she had small amounts of blood in her poo when she was about 9 weeks old. That stopped all her gas and she was a lot more settled after that. But she has changed again!
I saw the hv today who thinks it is teething too. I just don't know!
I am thinking of getting one of these super nannies whi help with weaning, routines and sleeping. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Does this sound familiar?

i am going thru something almost idential with my 5mth ds. like your dd my ds has always been fussy right from day 1! he used to fall asleep during feeds, or just point blank refuse them plus i could never get any of his wind up even using infacol. he got better but now has reverted back again. started to try to wean him 2weeks ago onto purees etc as his weight gain has slowed down and he'd dropped down a line on his weight chart. but he's having none of it! just blows rasberrys as soon as the spoon/food hits his mouth and we both end up covered in gunge. then he gets himself worked up and into a state. bottle wise he has now started fussing around with his bottle feeds too - spitting it out and chewing on the bottle teat. cant remember the last time he actually finished a full bottle. also unsettled during the daytime too, very grumpy and whinging - tho thankfully he still is going thru on a night. i thought myself it could be his teeth but am going to hv this week to check his weight hasn't slowed down any further and see what they can suggest.....

I know this sounds really simple but have you increased the size of the teat? We saw a paed recently who said every feed is like running a marathon for a baby - I also think as they get bigger, they get a bit lazier! My ds2 is on dr brown bottles and I had to order size 4 teats (nowhere seems to sell them in shops). He had gone from 5 oz to 7oz each feed!
