Well from listening to all the views on this topic lately, just wanted to hear your views....

When did you wean?
Start on purees or BLW?

5.5 months. DD was sitting up in her highchair at mealtimes and clearly keen to have a go so we just handed her stuff we were having. She got the hang of chewing and swallowing fruit and veg almost straight away so I guess she was ready.

jumpyjack · 15/01/2011 21:27

DD 6 months. Combination of BLW and purees. She really didn't eat much until 9 months. Breastfed until just over 2 years.
DS 6 months. BLW. He ate very little until nearly 1. Breastfed until 2 and 1/2 years.
Both thriving at 7 and 4, with good appetites and no allergies apparent.

6 months, BLW

HettyAmaretti · 15/01/2011 21:31

51/2 months for both DC (after EBF), I'd planned to wait until 26 weeks each time but both were very keen to gum food so I let them get on with it.

Did BLW.

Honeydragon · 15/01/2011 21:37

DS (now 7) ebf purees at 4 months, gave up fed him whatever after a very pfb Annabel Karmel stage that we got fed up with after 6 weeks.

dd (12 months) at 5 months she ate a piece of pizza that she'd grabbed so tried her on puree that faff lasted 5 days and she's since had whatever we are having.

Honeydragon · 15/01/2011 21:37

dd ebf too

mawbroon · 15/01/2011 21:43

6 months, BLW

Northernlurker · 16/01/2011 01:00

From 4 months with all three. Mostly puree with the older two but dd3 has more of a combination. Carried on b/feeding to 11 months with oldest two and to 2 years and 3 months with the last.

ascouser · 16/01/2011 01:07

blw at 5.5mths. she carried on b/feeding till 14mth

suzikettles · 16/01/2011 01:09

6 months. Didn't bother with purees, just mashed stuff and offered finger food.

chalat · 16/01/2011 01:12

With DS1 (in 1986) I was told that he had to have solids from 15 weeks, held out a bit longer and didn't rush it. He was doing just fine being exclusively breast fed, thriving, gaining weight, etc. More chilled and let DS2 lead the way, and both of them bf till 19 mths, DS2 would have liked it to be longer, but that's another story. DD was a law unto herself, bfing was her main nutrition for the first 18 months, she just wasn't fussed about food. Bf till she was almost 3yrs. I'd long stopped caring what anyone else thought and just 'read' my babies!!
Long term result is three kids who are now grown up and healthy. I'd love to see that HV who warned me DD wouldn't be able to chew unless I gave her real food (at 22wks.) Hmm she did her profession no favours in her attitude and just made me more determined to let nature take it's course and let DD lead the way.
I'm not normally given to violent urges but that was one such time!!! Wink
Shame the high profile this got in the media is so misleading. Who stood to benefit from the furore, hmm?

gaelicsheep · 16/01/2011 01:19

I let her play with/chew on stuff she could pick up from around 21 weeks - led by her. Started properly at 25 weeks - mix of purees and finger food. She only needed purees for a couple of weeks. Now I just mash/chop stuff up for her.

belindarose · 16/01/2011 09:58

BLW 5 months (EBF)

catwhiskers10 · 16/01/2011 10:27

I weaned at 22 weeks. Started off on purees but moved on quickly to well mashed foods and within 4 weeks DD was basically eating what we ate chopped up really small (chicken, fish etc) or finger feeding (toast etc). I have never had any problems with her eating and she doesn't refuse much. She is now almost 11 months and still breastfeeding and drinks juice from a cup at mealtimes as well.

ShowOfHands · 16/01/2011 10:36

Around 28/29 weeks iirc. When she was ready. EBF up until that point, BLW (ate what we ate straight away), still BF until 3.4

wolfhound · 16/01/2011 10:49

6 months. Purees for a long long time with DC1 (who I think was not ready to wean yet) Purees for a few weeks with DC2 who was finger feeding almost immediately and soon refused purees. Think it was about the right time for him.

PassionKiss · 16/01/2011 13:42

5.5 months - and I felt guilty for starting early!

Mixture of purees, stuff I was eating mashed up a bit and finger food from the start.

DD at eight months confidently has a go at anything put in front of her but I still spoon feed quite a lot for convenience.

seaweedhead · 16/01/2011 14:05

5.5 months. A mixture of simple purees and finger foods. DS is now 16 months and eats more or less the same stuff as us. I think we chose the right time- he was sitting up and grabbing things to put in his mouth.

lexxity · 16/01/2011 14:11

DS1 was 5months, Mix of BLW and purees. I had a picture of him out yesterday covered in fish pie and peas with a spoon in one hand and a huge grin on his face aged about 8 months! He bf til he was 2.5.

jemjabella · 16/01/2011 14:59

2 days shy of 6 mo (26 weeks) - BLW

NinkyNonker · 16/01/2011 18:51

Have lost count of wks,but dd is just over 5 mo and has tried a little baby rice. Going to start blw alongside bf this wk I think.

lljkk · 16/01/2011 18:53

Generally started on mash, not much purees. First tastes anywhere between 16wks and 21 wks. DC1-DC2 were having finger foods on a regular basis by 5 months old, but fingerfoods more like 6 months for DC3-4.
