Well from listening to all the views on this topic lately, just wanted to hear your views....

When did you wean?
Start on purees or BLW?

24 weeks or 5.5 months. BLW.

Was EBF up till then and still BFing now at 19 months.

Huffymuffy · 16/01/2011 19:32

In 2005 when DS was 5 months I gave it a go the Annabel Karmel way! With limited success. I was keener than him to start because he was big, had pressure from DM and was going back to work soon, so wanted to be the one to start it! Gave up, weaned him onto formula instead and he decided he was ready at about 7 months. 2008 DD was 7 months mixed fed bf/ff and I just couldn't be arsed with all that purée stuff, so left it and left it. Then one day ay about 7 months she grabbed a slice of pizza off the table and gummed away like a thing possessed. Blush so from that point on she started having mushed up whatever we were having. I am more proud of weaning her because she never had any jar food ever and not once did I sob into a loving slaved over special meal. If she ate fine, if not hey it didn't matter, I hadn't gone to masses of effort so it didn't matter. Incidentally, although DS preferred jars to my cooking, both of them eat really well now! I think not stressing out is the key.

21 weeks, BLW. Still breastfeeding and he's 2.3.

Woodlands · 16/01/2011 20:34

I started at 23.5 weeks (DS is 26 weeks today). We've been doing a mixture of mashed stuff and BLW.

greensnail · 16/01/2011 20:43

DD1 and DD2 both started BLW at 5 months (when they started grabbing food when at the table with us). Both still bf now, age 2 and 7 months and both eat really well.

Tigresswoods · 16/01/2011 20:43

EBF DS and then started on purees at 19 weeks.

He is now 10 months and he eats pretty much whatever, very good at feeding himself bits and pieces as well as stuff off a spoon.

Stopped BF at 8 months and he now happily takes a bottle.

Very happy with my situation and I think everyone should go with their own instincts.

threefeethighandrising · 17/01/2011 01:46

6 months, BLW.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 17/01/2011 10:38

5.5 months started offering bits and bobs - mixture of purees and some finger foods.

Three "meals" a day from 7 months.

MegBusset · 17/01/2011 10:46

DS1 26 weeks, attempted BLW but he had eczema so severe he couldn't touch most food without a reaction so had to go the puree/spoon route.

DS2 25 weeks, attempted puree/spoons but he refused to be spoon-fed so ended up mostly BLW!

Btw I am the only person I know irl to have EBF for that long, I think.

MoonUnitAlpha · 17/01/2011 16:21

22 weeks - BLW, properly eating brocolli and roasted veg from the off. He has food from spoons too (like porridge) but does the spooning himself after I load them for him.

Dozeyland · 17/01/2011 22:29

Ninkynonker let us know how it goes

LacksDaisies · 17/01/2011 22:36

DD (3.5) 24 weeks, mix of BLW and purees. BF till 10 months

DS2 22 weeks, BLW as he was grabbing things off our plates and stealing food from his siblings. BF till 17 months.

DS1, purees at 15 weeks due to pressure from HV and family, and not knowing that mumsnet existed Wink

LacksDaisies · 17/01/2011 22:37

DS1 is almost 9 I should add....

FlipFantasia · 18/01/2011 11:02

EBF ds until 25 weeks when we started BLW - he got to grips with it v quickly and within a week was having 3 meals a day. Still BFing (he's now 10 months).

Sassles · 18/01/2011 17:12

23 weeks I started down the baby rice then purees route. He got v constipated despite also EBF. I kept cutting back, but he would still get constipated despite v diluted prune juice etc. He then started refusing to be spoonfed.

Started BLW and haven't looked back. Was a bit bewildered at first, but bought the Murkett and Rapley book and going great guns.

Some days he eats tons, other days he eats a fair amount, but more milk. Still breast feeding also. 8 months old now and 22 lbs!! Gained over a pound over 4 weeks of BLW.

MarianneM · 19/01/2011 19:19

DD1 - 6 months, BLW

DD2 - she is 6 months old and we have just started weaning her with a mixture of finger foods and pureed stuff, and to my amazement she is (so far) keen on everything! DD1 wasn't really interested in anything other than breastmilk until about 8 months and remains a fussy eater to date.

DancingThroughLife · 19/01/2011 19:28

We're doing BLW. We started offering at about 24 weeks, but she wasn't interested. Still didn't really get the hang of it until about 2 weeks ago. I think she's 33 weeks now Confused She was definitely over 7 months when she started being interested in food though.

TMI, but funnily enough, it was when her poos turned more solid that she really noticed food. I don't know if that is related.

There is literally no stopping her now. If I'm giving her anything on a spoon, she launches at the spoon to get it. If it's finger food, she pushes so much in her mouth she gets hamster cheeks until she's swallowed it all Grin

RhinestoneCowgirl · 19/01/2011 19:34

With both DC, did BLW at around 6 months. They could sit independently by that point and were grabbing things and chewing them enthusiastically.

With my first I was struck by doubt every so often (usually when my mum was there...) and did try and shovel in some mush, but he wasn't keen. DS tasted plenty of stuff but didn't really eat much until 10 months. DD got the hang of it quicker and was eating lots at 8 months. They are 4 and 2 now and eat most things, with the odd wobble of course.

LovingKent · 20/01/2011 19:29

25 weeks. BLW. BF until 1 year

silkenladder · 20/01/2011 19:51

5.5 months as paediatrician (in Germany) told me there was a new study showing allergies were more prevalent when complementary foods introduced after six months. Tried purees for a couple of days, dd simply didn't get it. Then discovered blw and tried with stick of cucumber which was grabbed and gummed down to a point.

I subsequently went on an internet search to try to track down this study but it didn't seem to have been published Hmm

DD now 19 months, still bf.

bb99 · 20/01/2011 19:58

DC1 4 months and was bollocked told off by the HV that I had started too late and wasn't giving enough solid food quickly enough. 10+ years ago, so have heart ladies and gentlemen...they always seem to change their minds every few years / decades, so whatever you choose to do today will be wrong tomorrow.

DC2 5 months as the poor thing was smacking his lips and trying to grab food from the table/when I was cooking etc - this was in the last 5 years, so had to 'convince' the HV it was a good idea to start weaning with a few bits and bobs.

Hoping for no3 soon - and will avidly await the latest advice Grin

ASAPWW · 26/01/2011 10:44

Hi Dozeyland,
I started a tiny bit of solids (veg/fruit puree) at 4 months+3, once a day at 5pm until DD was 6 months, then I slowly introduced everything else, wheat, meat, eggs, dairy etc... I know 'they' say that introducing solids wont help your baby sleep better but it did with mine! It was like a miracle. I went from BF her 4 times a night to only once. After 2 weeks she slept through. It was the best thing i did. but i know all babies are different.
i actively weaned her off the breast at 7 months, she'd never taken a bottle so i thought i was in for a battle but i was quite certain i wanted to stop bfing and somehow she just started accepting formula over a period of about 2 weeks. It was hard and very emotional but I did it over to 2 weeks so that both she and I wouldnt be in tooo much pain. she is now 8 months and eats twice a day and has 3, 7 oz bottles. She's not interested in breakfast. I give her a mixture of finger foods and puree. she is too tired in the evening for finger foods but loves them for lunch! Good luck!

AngelDog · 27/01/2011 20:51

6 months, BLW.

Still bf'ing at 13 months.

putthekettleon · 28/01/2011 11:08

5 months started on purees/mashed up food. Now 7 months she has a mixture of mashed up versions of what we're having and finger foods.

Rhian82 · 28/01/2011 11:15

5 months, on purees.
